    Acetaldehyde involvement in ethanol's postabsortive effects during early ontogeny

    Clinical and biomedical studies sustains the notion that early ontogeny is a vulnerable window to the impact of alcohol. Experiences with the drug during these stages increase latter disposition to prefer, use or abuse ethanol. This period of enhanced sensitivity to ethanol is accompanied by a high rate of activity in the central catalase system, which metabolizes ethanol in the brain. Acetaldehyde (ACD), the first oxidation product of ethanol, has been found to share many neurobehavioral effects with the drug. Cumulative evidence supports this notion in models employing adults. Nevertheless very few studies have been conducted to analyze the role of ACD in ethanol postabsorptive effects, in newborns or infant rats. In this work we review recent experimental literature that syndicates ACD as a mediator agent of reinforcing aspects of ethanol, during early ontogenetic stages. We also show a meta-analytical correlational approach that proposes how differences in the activity of brain catalase across ontogeny, could be modulating patterns of ethanol consumption.Fil: March, Samanta Mabel.     Los huevos en La Colmena

    Las lenguas proponen interesantes juegos de recepción. En el español de nuestro país, por ejemplo, con la palabra ‘huevos’ nos referimos a los genitales masculinos, mientras que en italiano se trata del título del libro de poemas de Elisa Biagini (Florencia, Italia, 1970). Lo interesante surge cuando nos enteramos de que ‘huevo’ en italiano es masculino al singular y femenino al plural. El poemario de Biagini juega con esa transición de géneros. En el tantas veces atacado ‘horizonte masculino’ de la poesía italiana nace esta voz que llena de intenciones las imágenes. No hay referencias directas, sino el gesto hábil que sólo la poesía puede producir en el juego de la palabra. Biagini propone combatir la discursividad masculina de su tradición desde la dispersión de su voz: elabora figuras femeninas que aman hombres y mujeres, que son niñas, amantes y madres, sin necesidad de renunciar a la perversidad y al humor. El ejemplo más claro de esto es el poema “Feminist icon”, donde la misma mano que acaba de masturbarse hace la señal de la cruz entre el cuerpo y un burro de planchar.Biagini ha publicado tres libros de poemas: Questi nodi (Florencia, Gazebo, 1993), Uova (Génova, Zona, 1999) y l’ospite (Torino, Einaudi, 2004).     High-ISO long-exposure image denoising based on quantitative blob characterization

    Blob detection and image denoising are fundamental, sometimes related tasks in computer vision. In this paper, we present a computational method to quantitatively measure blob characteristics using normalized unilateral second-order Gaussian kernels. This method suppresses non-blob structures while yielding a quantitative measurement of the position, prominence and scale of blobs, which can facilitate the tasks of blob reconstruction and blob reduction. Subsequently, we propose a denoising scheme to address high-ISO long-exposure noise, which sometimes spatially shows a blob appearance, employing a blob reduction procedure as a cheap preprocessing for conventional denoising methods. We apply the proposed denoising methods to real-world noisy images as well as standard images that are corrupted by real noise. The experimental results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed methods over state-of-the-art denoising methods

    Trace-level reuse

    Trace-level reuse is based on the observation that some traces (dynamic sequences of instructions) are frequently repeated during the execution of a program, and in many cases, the instructions that make up such traces have the same source operand values. The execution of such traces will obviously produce the same outcome and thus, their execution can be skipped if the processor records the outcome of previous executions. This paper presents an analysis of the performance potential of trace-level reuse and discusses a preliminary realistic implementation. Like instruction-level reuse, trace-level reuse can improve performance by decreasing resource contention and the latency of some instructions. However, we show that trace-level reuse is more effective than instruction-level reuse because the former can avoid fetching the instructions of reused traces. This has two important benefits: it reduces the fetch bandwidth requirements, and it increases the effective instruction window size since these instructions do not occupy window entries. Moreover, trace-level reuse can compute all at once the result of a chain of dependent instructions, which may allow the processor to avoid the serialization caused by data dependences and thus, to potentially exceed the dataflow limit.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version

    FIRM DETERMINANTS IN NEW PRODUCT INTRODUCTION: A STUDY THROUGH SURVIVAL ANALYSIS

    The literature has broadly discussed the advantages obtained by pioneer firms under the concept of “first mover advantages”. However, less attention has been paid to the study of the factors that determine entry timing. The present paper analyzes the firm’s determinants in the introduction of a product innovation. The results obtained for the Cox regression in the case of the Italian ceramic tiles industry show that technological resources and firm size have a positive and significant influence on the likelihood of the innovation being introduced, while other factors, i.e. financial and marketing resources, have no influence on the adoption of the innovation.survival analysis, determinants of entry timing, resources, first mover advantages.
