Background: Renal neoplasms are a rare condition in felines, with metastatic lymphoma presenting the highest incidence rate. Secondary renal neoplasms are more frequent (88%) than primary renal tumors, with primary mesenquimal renal neoplasms accounting for 22% of the cases and the incidence of benign tumors not exceeding 5%. Myxomas are neoplasms in undifferentiated mesenchymal cells with abundant reproduction of the myxoid matrix, with few few case reports about this type of neoplasm in the veterinary literature. This study reports the first case of renal myxoma in a young feline afflicted by granulomatous nephritis and diagnosed with FIP (Feline Infectious Peritonitis).Case: A 9-month-old, male, mixed breed feline, was admitted into the Veterinary Hospital maintained by the School of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science, Botucatu, Brazil, presenting symptoms such progressive weight loss and occasional episodes of emesis for one week, progressing to anorexia, hematochezia, vocalization, lack of coordination, spasms, anuria and inability to defecate. A physical examination revealed moderate dehydration, low temperatures (< 33ºC), dyspnea (36 mpm), slight hyperglycemia (187 mg/dL) and distension of the abdomen and of the urinary bladder. The hematological assay and the serum biochemistry assay revealed neutrophilic leukocytosis, thrombocytopenia, anemia and slight uremia. In view of the severity of the neurologic signs and lack of response to the clinical treatment, the owner opted to euthanize the animal. The necropsy revealed diffused jaundice, with kidney injuries observed through the pale coloration of the tissue and irregular surface with multiple off-white small nodules distributed in a marked and diffuse way. The same injury pattern was observed markedly in the lungs and discretely in the spleen and liver. The material collected was fixed in a 10% formalin solution, and processed according to the routine technique (Hematoxylin & Eosin). The remaining samples were submitted to a histochemical analysis with the Alcian Blue and Masson’s Trichrome stains, in addition to an immunohistochemical expression test. The histopathological examination with H&E staining revealed multiple focuses of pyogranulomatous injuries in the kidneys, lungs, spleen, uvea and leptomeninges, corroborating the diagnosis of feline infectious peritonitis (FIP). In addition, there was a neoplastic proliferation of fusiform cells among an abundant myxoid matrix, evident in Alcian Blue staining. Normal renal tissue, such as glomeruli or tubules, were occasionally observed inside the neoplastic proliferation. Masson’s Trichrome technique was used to exclude the possibility of a fibroblastic origin. In addition, immunohistochemistry (IHC) was performed to confirm the diagnosis of myxoma using the Vimentin, pan-cytokeratin and p63 antibodies. Discussion: Kidney tumors are rare in veterinary medicine, but have an incidence rate four to five times greater in cats than in dogs. The veterinary literature describes myxomas located in joints, cardiac valves and ureter, but reports of myxomas afflicting the kidneys are more commons in human medicine. This tumor should be included in the differential diagnosis process for young cats with suspicions of renal neoplasms, however, to differentiate between neoplasms with a myxoid component in benign tumors. This is the first reported case of renal myxoma afflicting a young feline with feline infectious peritonitis (FIP) in the veterinary literature

The aim of this randomized in vivo study was to compare antimicrobial chemotherapies in primary carious dentin. Thirty-two participants ages 5 to 7 years underwent partial caries removal from deep carious dentin lesions in primary molars and were subsequently divided into three groups: control [chlorhexidine and resin-modified glass ionomer cement (RMGIC)], LEDTB [photodynamic antimicrobial chemotherapy (PACT) with light-emitting diode associated with toluidine blue solution and RMGIC], and LMB [PACT with laser associated with methylene blue solution and RMGIC]. The participants were submitted to initial clinical and radiographic examinations. Demographic features and biofilm, gingival, and DMFT/DMFS indexes were evaluated, in addition to clinical and radiographic followups at 6 and 12 months after treatments. Carious dentin was collected before and after each treatment, and the number of Streptococcus mutans, Streptococcus sobrinus, Lactobacillus casei, Fusobacterium nucleatum, Atopobium rimae, and total bacteria was established by quantitative polymerase chain reaction. No signs of pain or restoration failure were observed. All therapies were effective in reducing the number of microorganisms, except for S. sobrinus. No statistical differences were observed among the protocols used. All therapies may be considered as effective modern approaches to minimal intervention for the management of deep primary caries treatment2010FUNDAÇÃO DE AMPARO À PESQUISA DO ESTADO DE SÃO PAULO - FAPESP#2010/07212-5; #2011/08392-

The objective of this work was to estimate the optimal number of harvests for the reliable selection of zucchini (Cucurbita pepo) hybrids through the repeatability coefficient. The experimental design was randomized complete blocks with 33 treatments (31 experimental hybrids and 2 commercial ones) and four replicates, with six plants per plot. Fifteen harvests were carried out. Seven morphoagronomic fruit characteristics were evaluated, and repeatability coefficients were estimated using four statistical methods. The repeatability coefficients ranged from low to moderate, regardless of the studied characteristic. For a high-precision selection (R2≥90%), a high number of evaluated harvests was required, especially for traits related to fruit yield, as follows: 30 to 54 harvests for selection based on total yield; and 43 to 83 harvests for commercial yield, which varied according to the statistical estimation method. The principal component analysis based on the covariance matrix required the least number of harvests for a satisfactory selection precision.

Hymenaea stigonocarpa is anarboreal medicinal species used in the recovery of degraded areas. However, little is known about its nutritional requirements during the seedling phase, especially concerning to potassium. In this context, the aim of this study was to evaluate if potassium doses promote morphophysiological changes in Hymenaea stigonocarpa seedlings.A completely randomized design, consisting in six KCl doses (0, 50, 100, 150, 200 and 250 mg dm-3KCl) and four replications was applied. Biometric, biomass, physiological and potassium content variables were assessed. Hymenaea stigonocarpa displayed significant physiological and biometric responses to potassium fertilization, with the highest values observed at doses ranging from 150 to 200 mg dm-3 KCl. Moreover, concentration effects were noted regarding to potassium contents in seedling leaves and stems.

    Get PDF
The town of Santo Antonio do Monte is deemed to be the 2nd largest center of fireworks production in the world, and pyrotechnics is the region's main economic activity. However, the work in the pyrotechnic industry has raised serious concerns from labor unions and researchers, as well as the workers and their families. Labor accidents in this sector are usually fatal or mutilating, and there're also reports of labor-related diseases. Thus, this study aimed to analyze the repercussions of the fireworks production process on these workers' health and safety. Studies on the Psychopathology of Work and those based on the French tradition of ergonomic analysis provided the main references for this study. To carry out this research, we used a pluridimensional methodological strategy, which gathered and connected statistical, empirical (clinical facts, reports, observations), and documental data. The results show that workers are exposed to accidents resulting from the performance of jobs for which they haven't been properly trained, as well as to a painful and harmful activity, which causes repetitive strain injuries (RSIs) and workrelated musculoskeletal diseases. Women who work in this sector also face sexual harassment practiced by their employer's representatives

Heart Fossilization Is Possible And Informs The Evolution Of Cardiac Outflow Tract In Vertebrates

Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo (FAPESP)Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq)Elucidating cardiac evolution has been frustrated by lack of fossils. One celebrated enigma in cardiac evolution involves the transition from a cardiac outflow tract dominated by a multi-valved conus arteriosus in basal actinopterygians, to an outflow tract commanded by the non valved, elastic, bulbus arteriosus in higher actinopterygians. We demonstrate that cardiac preservation is possible in the extinct fish Rhacolepis buccalis from the Brazilian Cretaceous. Using X-ray synchrotron microtomography, we show that Rhacolepis fossils display hearts with a conus arteriosus containing at least five valve rows. This represents a transitional morphology between the primitive, multivalvar, conal condition and the derived, monovalvar, bulbar state of the outflow tract in modern actinopterygians. Our data rescue a long-lost cardiac phenotype (119-113 Ma) and suggest that outflow tract simplification in actinopterygians is compatible with a gradual, rather than a drastic saltation event. Overall, our results demonstrate the feasibility of studying cardiac evolution in fossils.5Coordenacao de Aperfeigoamento de Pessoal de Nivel Superior [01P-03488/2014]Fundacao de Amparo a Pesquisa do Estado de Sao Paulo [2012/05152-0]Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Cientifico e Tecnologico [481983/2013-9]Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo (FAPESP)Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq
