    Prevención de las lesiones de los músculos isquiosurales en el fútbol profesional. Propuesta de intervención

    El fútbol es el deporte con mayor índice lesional. La musculatura isquiosural es la más afectada, suponiendo un 30% aproximadamente del total. Nuestro objeto de estudio fue elaborar un plan de prevención en un equipo de fútbol profesional masculino de primera división (LFP) durante la temporada 2011/12 con el fin de minimizar el riesgo de lesión y observar, al final de la misma, si el número total de lesiones de la musculatura isquiosural había disminuido con respecto a las dos temporadas previas del mismo equipo valorando, exclusivamente, el trabajo de prevención. Para ello, un total de 20 jugadores de un equipo de fútbol profesional de primera división (LFP) realizaron un programa de prevención a lo largo de la temporada 2011/12. Escogimos 18 ejercicios para su realización, a modo de circuito, con la siguiente pauta de trabajo: 20? trabajo, 10?descanso, 20? trabajo, 10? cambio de estación. En cuanto a los resultados, fueron recogidas un total de 18 lesiones musculares, 16 durante la competición (89%). De las 18, 6 se produjeron en la musculatura isquiosural (33%), todas en competición. Por último, de los 6 jugadores lesionados, 5 sufrieron lesión previa de los isquiosurales (83%). Podemos concluir que la aplicación de un programa de prevención específico combinando ejercicios de fuerza (sobre todo excéntrica), RSPM y flexibilidad en un equipo de fútbol profesional, puede disminuir el número de lesiones de la musculatura isquiosural, además de actuar como terapia coadyuvante para el resto de las estructura

    Gendered opportunities for improving soil health: A conceptual framework to help set the research agenda

    Healthy soils play a critical role in supporting agricultural productivity, climate change mitigation and resilience, and a range of ecosystem services. Degraded and poorly responsive soils cover large areas of Africa and represent the majority of poor farmers’ fields in certain regions. While there are hundreds of technical options for improving the sustainability of land management and preventing or reversing degradation, there are many sociocultural, institutional, economic, and policy barriers hindering their adoption at large scale. At the same time, there is an emerging consensus within the international development community that gender equality and women’s empowerment are both an end in themselves and an important means for achieving a range of economic and social development objectives such as improved food security, child nutrition and education, and women’s health. Yet, gender inequality remains a wicked problem, whose deep-seated socio-economic and ideological causes are difficult to recognize and address, and which require context- and culture-specific understandings and approaches, involving multiple stakeholders with different and sometimes conflicting interests and different positions within power hierarchies. There is an urgent need to make more rapid progress on restoring and sustaining soil productivity and ecosystem functions and also to leverage soil health management for progress on gender equality. While there are important interconnections between soil health and gender equality and empowerment, these are seldom recognized, and have not been addressed in a coherent or concerted manner. In this study, we have reviewed relevant gender literature and proposed a conceptual framework to help illuminate important gender considerations for soil health and land management. These considerations are essential for identifying gender-based constraints, opportunities, and unintended consequences in promoting soil management technologies. Moreover, the application of the framework can help guide in priority setting with respect to where gender-responsive interventions are essential. We make several recommendations for setting priorities for gender-soil health research

    Paliperidone Reversion of Maternal Immune Activation-Induced Changes on Brain Serotonin and Kynurenine Pathways

    Emerging evidence indicates that early-life exposure to environmental factors may increase the risk for schizophrenia via inflammatory mechanisms. Inflammation can alter the metabolism of tryptophan through the oxidative kynurenine pathway to compounds with neurotoxic and neuroprotective activity and compromise serotonin (5-HT) synthesis. Here we investigate the role of serotonergic and kynurenine pathways in the maternal immune activation (MIA) animal model of schizophrenia. The potential reversion exerted by long-term antipsychotic treatment was also evaluated. MIA was induced by prenatal administration of polyinosinic:polycytidylic acid (poly (I:C)) in mice. Expression of different proteins and the content of different metabolites involved in the function of serotonergic and kynurenine pathways was assessed by RT-PCR, immunoblot and ELISA analyses in frontal cortex of the offspring after puberty. MIA decreased tissue 5-HT content and promoted changes in the expression of serotonin transporter, 5-HT2A and 5-HT2C receptors. Expression of indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase 2 (IDO2) and kynurenine 3-monooxygenase (KMO) was increased by poly (I:C) whereas kynurenine aminotransferase II and its metabolite kynurenic acid were not altered. Long-term paliperidone was able to counteract MIA-induced changes in 5-HT and KMO, and to increase tryptophan availability and tryptophan hydroxylase-2 expression in poly (I:C) mice but not in controls. MIA-induced increase of the cytotoxic risk ratio of kynurenine metabolites (quinolinic/kynurenic acid) was also reversed by paliperidone. MIA induces specific long-term brain effects on serotonergic activity. Such effects seem to be related with alternative activation of the kynurenine metabolic pathway towards a cytotoxic status.     The role of snow in scavenging aerosol particles: A physical-chemical characterization

    [EN] The below cloud scavenging of aerosols by snow has been analysed in León (NW Spain). Six snow events were registered over the course of one year of study. Ultrafine and accumulation aerosol particles were measured using a scanning mobility particle sizer spectrometer, while hydrometeors were characterized using a disdrometer. Furthermore, the chemical composition of the melted snow-water samples (soluble and insoluble fractions) was analysed. The scavenging coefficient (λ) showed a great variability among events. An effective washing of particles was observed during the first 30 min of snowfall. The mean change in the scavenging efficiency (%ΔC) of particle number concentration (PNC) and λ coefficient during this time interval were: i) nucleation mode: 36.3 % and 3.02 · 10−4 s−1; ii) Aitken mode: 30.4 % and 2.37 · 10−4 s−1 and iii) accumulation mode: 22.4 % and 1.77 · 10−4 s−1. The range of particle sizes that is less efficiently scavenged by snowfall was observed between 400 and 600 nm. When analyzing the whole snow event, an increase of PNC was observed. Two possible explanations underlie this behaviour: it could be caused by changes in air masses or by the resuspension of aerosol particles scavenged by snowflakes upon reaching the ground. A clear relationship was observed between Ca2+, SO42− and NO3− concentrations of aerosol particles before the snow event and the concentrations registered in the melted snow-water. The largest and smallest changes in aerosol number concentrations were caused by snowflakes of 3 and 6 mm in diameter, respectively. The particle size distributions (PSD) were fitted to log-normal distributions and the parameters were compared before and after snowfall.S

    [EN] The dome of the Basilica de la Virgen de los Desamparados of Valencia is an emblematic example of Valencian baroque architecture and painting. Its shape, oval or elliptical, has been the subject of controversy in various studies. The study of oval domes throughout history is a very interesting field of research because, among other things, the determination of the exact shape is important in order to conclude how it was built. We approach the problem from a new mathematical point of view, calculating the distances between the points that make up the real data cloud and the hypothetical form considered, oval or ellipse. The use of modern graphic surveying techniques, carried out with a 3D laser scanner, and computation with the powerful symbolic and numerical mathematical solver, Mathematica, has allowed us to accurately determine the shape of the dome and determine that its sections are not well-described by ellipses. A better fit is obtained assuming that sections are ovals.     El Per? totaliza m?s de 3,050 estaciones de servicio que expenden combustibles l?quidos (di?sel, gasolinas, gasoholes y GLP) para el transporte de veh?culos ligeros y pesados, los cuales generan altos ?ndices de nocividad, emisiones de CO2 y contaminaci?n al medio ambiente. Dicha problem?tica se puede resolver con el uso del GNL (combustible m?s limpio y amigable, ya que logra beneficios medioambientales y econ?micos al pa?s. Como parte de la transici?n energ?tica y contribuci?n al cambio clim?tico, de acuerdo a los casos exitosos desarrollados en Europa, Asia y Estados Unidos, se implementa cuatro estaciones de servicio de GNL a lo largo del corredor vial costero peruano, las cuales se encuentran ubicadas estrat?gicamente en los departamentos de La Libertad, Lima, Ica y Arequipa para atender al rubro de transporte interprovincial de pasajeros y carga pesada.     Intraoperative radiotherapy electron boost followed by moderate doses of external beam radiotherapy in resected soft-tissue sarcoma of the extremities

    To analyze the patterns of failure and the toxicity profile of intraoperative electron beam radiotherapy (IOERT) after resection of soft tissue sarcomas of the extremities (STS). PATIENTS AND METHODS: Forty-five patients with extremity STS were treated with IOERT and moderate-dose postoperative radiotherapy (45-50 Gy). Twenty-six patients were treated for primary disease (PD) and 19 patients for an isolated recurrence (ILR). Tumor size was >5 cm (maximum diameter) in 36 patients (80%), and high-grade histology in PD patients was present in 14 patients (54%). In nine patients, IOERT was used alone, due to previous irradiation or patient refusal. Chemotherapy (neoadjuvant and/or adjuvant) was mainly given to high-grade tumors. RESULTS: Nine patients relapsed in the extremity (20%), and 12 patients in distant sites (28%). Actuarial local control at 5 years was 88% for patients with negative/close margins and 57% for patients presenting positive margins (P=0.04). Five patients (11%) developed neuropathy associated with the treatment. Extremity preservation was achieved in 40 patients (88%). With a median follow-up of 93 months (range: 27-143 months) for the patients at risk, 25 patients remain alive (a 7-year actuarial survival rate of 75% for PD and 47% for ILR; P=0.01). CONCLUSIONS: IOERT combined with moderate doses of external beam irradiation yields high local control and extremity preservation rates in resected extremity STS. Peripheral nerves in the IOERT field are dose-limiting structures requiring a dose compromise in the IOERT component to avoid severe neurological damage
