Nonempirical Density Functionals Investigated for Jellium: Spin-Polarized Surfaces, Spherical Clusters, and Bulk Linear Response

Earlier tests show that the Tao-Perdew-Staroverov-Scuseria (TPSS) nonempirical meta-generalized gradient approximation (meta-GGA) for the exchange-correlation energy yields more accurate surface energies than the local spin density (LSD) approximation for spin-unpolarized jellium. In this study, work functions and surface energies of a jellium metal in the presence of ``internal'' and external magnetic fields are calculated with LSD, Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof (PBE) GGA, and TPSS meta-GGA and its predecessor, the nearly nonempirical Perdew-Kurth-Zupan-Blaha (PKZB) meta-GGA, using self-consistent LSD orbitals and densities. The results show that: (i) For normal bulk densities, the surface correlation energy is the same in TPSS as in PBE, as it should be since TPSS strives to represent a self-correlation correction to PBE; (ii) Normal surface density profiles can be scaled uniformly to the low-density or strong-interaction limit, and TPSS provides an estimate for that limit that is consistent with (but probably more accurate than) other estimates; (iii) For both normal and low densities, TPSS provides the same description of surface magnetism as PBE, suggesting that these approximations may be generally equivalent for magnetism. The energies of jellium spheres with up to 106 electrons are calculated using density functionals and compared to those obtained with Diffusion Quantum Monte Carlo data, including our estimate for the fixed-node correction. Finally we calculate the linear response of bulk jellium using these density functionals, and find that not only LSD but also PBE GGA and TPSS meta-GGA yield a linear-response in good agreement with that of the Quantum Monte Carlo method, for wavevectors of the perturbing external potential up to twice the Fermi wavevector.Comment: 14 pages, 9 figure

    Get PDF
Kohlschütter-Tönz Syndrome is a rare disorder clinically characterized by amelogenesis imperfecta, epilepsy and progressive mental deterioration. We present an additional case of this syndrome of a nine year-old boy who was referred by pigmented teeth. The mental deterioration was associated with speech delay, impulsive behavior, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, and learning problems. The physical examination revealed a reduction of lower third, slightly palpebral fissures, low ear and hair implantation, coarse hair and hypertrichosis. The intraoral examination showed alteration in teeth pigmentation diagnosed as amelogenesis imperfecta. Although rare, the present case report illustrates a syndrome that has dental anomalies and systemic alterations. It is important to recognize this syndrome as early as possible and paediatric dentist may contribute to the diagnosis and consequently to better manage the patients. Key words:Kohlschütter-Tönz syndrome, amelogenesis imperfecta, seizures, mental deterioration.5e108-1

This paper is concerned with the structure of implicit operations on R intersection with LJ1, the pseudovariety of all R-trivial, locally idempotent and locally commutative semigroups. We give a unique factorization statement, in terms of component projections and idempotent elements, for the implicit operations on R intersection with LJ1. As an application we give a combinatorial description of the languages that are both R-trivial and locally testable. A similar study is conducted for the pseudovariety DA intersection with LJ1 of locally idempotent and locally commutative semigroups in which each regular D-class is a rectangular band.INVOTAN, grant 4/ A/94/PO.PRC-GdR AM

Objective:Describe the histological and cancer frequency in children and adolescents attended at the Hospital de Base Dr. Ary Pinheiro and the Hospital de Barretos / Rondônia, Western Amazonia, in the years 2014 and 2015. Method: This is a descriptive, quantitative and transverse study. We used a structured instrument containing a series of variables, such as gender, age, histological types, more frequent neoplasms, lymphomas, leukemias, among others. We asked The Comitê de Ética em Pesquisa em Seres Humanos (Research Ethics Committee) to dispense the Informed Consent Form because the study did not require intervention on the patient or collection of biological material, and no possibility of constraints on patients and their relatives. Results: From 75 cases, 32 (42.7%) were female and 43 (57.3%) were male. Regarding the distribution of patients according to the age group, 21 (28.0%) were younger than 4 years, 12 (16.0%), 5 to 9 years, 17 (22.6%) from 10 to 14 and 25 (33.4%) from 15 to 19. The most frequent histological types by gender were leukemias of myeloproliferative diseases and myelodysplastic diseases with 30% and 50% new cases in the period, followed by lymphomas and reticuloendothelial neoplasms with 16.65% and 20, 0% of the histological types in the period. Leukemia in the hematopoietic and reticuloendothelial system (C42) is the most frequent cancer in both, female and male gender, with 47.5% of cancers in the biennium. The second group of cancers in children from 0 to 19 years old and location of the primary tumor is the encephalon carcinoma (C71), with 11.25% of the new cases. Conclusions: The results presented with their proper nuances are in agreement with the data of studies carried out in Brazil and in other countries

The objective of this work was to evaluate herbage accumulation and mass during the growing season of Massai grass mixed with peanut forage and fertilized with nitrogen. The work was carried out at Federal Rural University of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from 11/2021 to 03/2022. A randomized block experimental design was used, in plots of Massai grass Megathyrsus maximus, in a factorial arrangement, with seven replications. Four treatments formed by the combination of the presence or absence of Archis pintoi and nitrogen fertilization (0 and 50 kg ha-1 of N). Canopy heights of the plots were evaluated weekly and when they reached values of about 50 cm two samples were collected and the total herbage accumulation and mass were calculated. The treatments without nitrogen fertilization and legume had the lowest herbage accumulation and mass (5,080 and 2,060 kg ha-1 of DM, respectively), when compared to the plots that had nitrogen fertilization and legume. The treatments with or without legume but with nitrogen fertilization had the same herbage accumulation and mass (9,775 and 2,630 kg ha-1 of DM, respectively). Thus, the presence of the legume resulted in greater herbage accumulation and mass in relation to those plots without legume and nitrogen fertilization. However, when nitrogen fertilization was performed no additive effect with the presence of the legume was observed, indicating that the nitrogen fertilization somehow inhibited the benefit of the legume on forage production. So, based on the short-term results obtained, the use of nitrogen fertilization or the use of forage peanuts should be done separately

REMOVAL OF THE HORMONES 17b-ESTRADIOL AND 17a-ETHINYLESTRADIOL FROM AQUEOUS SOLUTIONS EMPLOYING A DECOMPOSED PEAT AS ADSORBENT MATERIAL. This paper describes the adsorption of 17b-estradiol (E2) and 17a-ethinylestradiol (EE2) from aqueous solution by decomposed peat. The peat presented a good adsorption process, close to 76.2% for E2 removal and approximately 55.0% for EE2. Moreover, the results indicated a probable multi-layered process. Adsorption isotherms were well fitted by Freundlich model. The data were evaluated considering the pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second-order approaches, being the second more significant mechanism in the rate-controlling step. Thermodynamic data revealed that hormones adsorption onto peat is spontaneous under the employed experimental conditions. The results confirmed the potential of this adsorbent to be employed for effluents treatment

    Get PDF

This study aims to verify the use and mastery of linguistic knowledge in the writing process of Pedagogy students, in the form of Distance Education. The methodology was based on an exploratory analysis of texts produced in the face-to-face assessments that occurred in the first half of 2017. In the analysis of the answers, a descriptive graph of the errors and inadequacies observed was presented. The results show the commitment of writing to the meaning of the text, since this is a result of it. With this study, it was noticed that the university students have presented difficulties in expressing, in writing, their thoughts, their understandings and their opinions in an adequate and coherent way. Therefore, in order to minimize the anxiety experienced by these students at the time of writing, it is suggested that through the Instrumental Portuguese class, which part of the curriculum is, the linguistic aspects responsible for the production of meaning in texts and the interaction of the interlocutors. In order to meet the needs of undergraduate students, in the specific case of Pedagogy, since it concerns the training of teachers, professionals who will work in the literacy of children and young people and need to prioritize knowledge about language, reading and writing of these students
