    Counting surface branched covers

    To a branched cover f between orientable surfaces one can associate a certain branch datum D(f), that encodes the combinatorics of the cover. This D(f) satisfies a compatibility condition called the Riemann-Hurwitz relation. The old but still partly unsolved Hurwitz problem asks whether for a given abstract compatible branch datum D there exists a branched cover f such that D(f)=D. One can actually refine this problem and ask how many these f's exist, but one must of course decide what restrictions one puts on such f's, and choose an equivalence relation up to which one regards them. And it turns out that quite a few natural choices are possible. In this short note we carefully analyze all these choices and show that the number of actually distinct ones is only three.     Integrating Copernicus land cover data into the i-Tree Cool Air model to evaluate and map urban heat mitigation by tree cover

    Cities host more than half of the world’s population and due to global warming and land use change their vulnerability to deadly heat waves has increased. A healthy vegetated landscape can abate heat wave severity and diminish the related urban heat island through the process of evapotranspiration. This research aimed to develop a methodology for cities to use publicly available Copernicus land cover maps within the i-Tree Cool Air water and energy balance model to map air temperature and humidity. The manuscript presents proof of concept using Naples, Italy with its Mediterranean climate characterized by limited soil water for cooling via evapotranspiration. The approach achieved strong correlations between predicted and observed air temperatures across the city (r ≥ 0.89). During the warm season of 2020, forested land cover was 5°C cooler than land cover dominated by impervious cover. Simulated land cover change, limited to a 10% increase or decrease in tree cover, generated an inverse change of 0.2°C in maximum hourly air temperature, with more trees obtaining cooler air. Soil water limited the cooling, with the generally wetter spring season enabling greater cooling of air temperatures, and summer droughts without irrigation had constrained cooling. Sustainable urban design will likely require an increase in plant cover along with a reduction of impervious surfaces that absorb and reradiate heat in order to improve community resilience to heat waves

    An Intraoperative β−\beta^- Detecting Probe For Radio-Guided Surgery in Tumour Resection

    The development of the β−\beta^- based radio-guided surgery aims to extend the technique to those tumours where surgery is the only possible treatment and the assessment of the resection would most profit from the low background around the lesion, as for brain tumours. Feasibility studies on meningioma, glioma, and neuroendocrine tumors already estimated the potentiality of this new treatment. To validate the technique, prototypes of the intraoperative probe required by the technique to detect β−\beta^- radiation have been developed. This paper discusses the design details of the device and the tests performed in laboratory. In such tests particular care has to be taken to reproduce the surgical field conditions. The innovative technique to produce specific phantoms and the dedicated testing protocols is described in detail.Comment: 7 pages, 15 figure

    The loess deposits of Buca Dei Corvi section (Central Italy): Revisited

    Loess deposits have been described in the past for the upper section of Buca Dei Corvi succession (Central Italy). In this paper the depositswere re-analysed to clarify the depositional environment and to attempt a paleoclimate reconstruction. Two radiocarbon dates on pedogenic carbonate constrain the ages to the Late Glacial, and are consistent with previous OSL dating of the top of the succession. The non-marine mollusc assemblage shows typical character of cold and dry climatic conditions, testified by strong oligotypical composition. Mineralogy and geochemistry of the sediments indicate the abundant presence of exotic quartz mineral which can be explained only by wind transport. Probably,wind transportwas also responsible of deposition of carbonatewhich then dissolved and re-precipitated producing pedogenic concretions. Stable isotopes (13C/12C and 18O/16O ratios) of the concretions are consistent with a climate drier than present conditions, with an environment characterized by sparse vegetation

    Genetic differentiation between Segugio dell'Appennino and Segugio Maremmano dog breeds assessed by microsatellite markers

    The domestic dog (Canis Familiaris) was the first species to be tamed and bred to occupy a variety of functions. The Segugio dell’Appennino and Segugio Maremmano are two Italian breeds used extensively as hunting dogs. Microsatellites and other genetic markers are useful tools in evaluating the within and between breed genetic variation. The aim of this study was to investigate genetic differentiation among the two reeds through the analysis of 21 microsatellite markers. The two populations share the same geographical regions but have been over time selected on different parameters to achieve specific functions. All the analysed microsatellite markers were polymorphic and the average number of alleles per locus was 8.19. The mean FIT index (0.051; P<0.05) highlights that at some point in time, the normal gene flow among the animals was disrupted, giving rise to a heterozygote deficiency in both breeds, and this is confirmed by the mean FST fixation index (0.010; P<0.05) clearly indicating an absence of a significant genetic differentiation between the two breeds. The mean FIS value was significantly different from zero (0.042) (P<0.05) reconfirming the presence of a lack of heterozygosity in the studied samples. The values of observed and expected heterozygosity were similar in the two breeds. AMOVA, PCA and STRUCTURE analysis, all emphasise the lack of significant differences mong the two breeds in terms of genetic differentiation. The presence of a population substructure is probably due to a genetic introgression from different Segugio breeds, that can be confirmed with further studies

    Lipoprotein(a) and cognitive performances in an elderly white population: Cross-sectional and follow-up data

    Background and Purpose - Elevated lipoprotein(a) [Lp(a)l serum levels have been associated with an increased risk of vascular diseases, and preliminary observations suggest that they are a risk factor for vascular dementia. The relationship between Lp(a) levels and cognitive performances in the general population has never been investigated. Our aim was to evaluate the effect of elevated Lp(a) levels on cognitive functions in the elderly, Methods - Cognitive performances were assessed by means of the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), the Babcock Short Story, and the Matrix Test in a population sample of 435 white subjects aged 65 to 84 years who were evaluated at baseline and after 3 years. Lp(a) levels were determined by ELISA. Results - No statistically significant difference was found in neuropsychological test scores between subjects with and without elevated Lp(a) levels, although subjects with elevated Lp(a) levels had slightly better cognitive performances. This difference reached a statistical significance level only in a subscore of the Matrix Test (number of correct responses) when adjusted for age,:sex, education, smoking, and history of stroke; At follow-up, no statistically significant difference was found in cognitive performances between subjects with and without elevated Lp(a) serum levels in either univariate or multivariate analyses. Subjects with and without elevated Lp(a) showed a similar decline rate during follow-up. Conclusions In this sample of elderly white subjects, elevated Lp(a) levels were not associated with poorer cognitive performances or with an increased rate of cognitive decline. Elevated Lp(a) levels do not appear to be a major determinant of cognitive impairment in the elderly

    A chemogenomic screening identifies CK2 as a target for pro-senescence therapy in PTEN-deficient tumours

    Enhancement of cellular senescence in tumours triggers a stable cell growth arrest and activation of an antitumour immune response that can be exploited for cancer therapy. Currently, there are only a limited number of targeted therapies that act by increasing senescence in cancers, but the majority of them are not selective and also target healthy cells. Here we developed a chemogenomic screening to identify compounds that enhance senescence in PTEN-deficient cells without affecting normal cells. By using this approach, we identified casein kinase 2 (CK2) as a pro-senescent target. Mechanistically, we show that Pten loss increases CK2 levels by activating STAT3. CK2 upregulation in Pten null tumours affects the stability of Pml, an essential regulator of senescence. However, CK2 inhibition stabilizes Pml levels enhancing senescence in Pten null tumours. Taken together, our screening strategy has identified a novel STAT3-CK2-PML network that can be targeted for pro-senescence therapy for cancer

    A cross-sectional study evaluating hospitalization rates for chronic limb-threatening ischemia during the COVID-19 outbreak in Campania, Italy

    The expansion of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) prompted measures of disease containment by the Italian government with a national lockdown on March 9, 2020. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the rate of hospitalization and mode of in-hospital treatment of patients with chronic limb-threatening ischemia (CLTI) before and during lockdown in the Campania region of Italy. The study population includes all patients with CLTI hospitalized in Campania over a 10-week period: 5 weeks before and 5 weeks during lockdown (n = 453). Patients were treated medically and/or underwent urgent revascularization and/or major amputation of the lower extremities. Mean age was 69.2 +/- 10.6 years and 27.6% of the patients were women. During hospitalization, 21.9% of patients were treated medically, 78.1% underwent revascularization, and 17.4% required amputations. In the weeks during the lockdown, a reduced rate of hospitalization for CLTI was observed compared with the weeks before lockdown (25 vs 74/100,000 inhabitants/year; incidence rate ratio: 0.34, 95% CI 0.32-0.37). This effect persisted to the end of the study period. An increased amputation rate in the weeks during lockdown was observed (29.3% vs 13.4%; p &lt; 0.001). This study reports a reduced rate of CLTI-related hospitalization and an increased in-hospital amputation rate during lockdown in Campania. Ensuring appropriate treatment for patients with CLTI should be prioritized, even during disease containment measures due to the COVID-19 pandemic or other similar conditions
