    Dynamics of gender justice, conflict and social cohesion: analysing educational reforms in Pakistan

    This paper analyses the role of national level reforms in school curriculum and initial teacher education in gender justice in conflict-affected Pakistan, using a multidisciplinary framework applied to multiple data sets from selected teacher education institutions in Sindh. The school curriculum texts analysed potentially perpetuate gender injustice and foster conflict. While teacher education reforms offer the potential for transformative gender justice, gender remains peripheral in initial teacher education curriculum. Furthermore, institutional practices entrench gendered norms. Lecturers’ and teachers’ limited understanding of their role and capacity for transformative gender justice pose challenges to education for gender justice, social cohesion and conflict mitigation. Informed by our understanding of gender as socially constructed, multiple strategies within and beyond education are offered towards transformative gender justice

    The structure of cluster merger shocks: turbulent width and the electron heating time-scale

    We present a new 2 Ms Chandra observation of the cluster merger Abell 2146, which hosts two huge M∼2 shock fronts each ∼500 kpc across. For the first time, we resolve and measure the width of cluster merger shocks. The best-fit width for the bow shock is 17 ± 1 kpc and for the upstream shock is 10.7 ± 0.3 kpc. A narrow collisionless shock will appear broader in projection if its smooth shape is warped by local gas motions. We show that both shock widths are consistent with collisionless shocks blurred by local gas motions of 290 ± 30 km s −1. The upstream shock forms later on in the merger than the bow shock and is therefore expected to be significantly narrower. From the electron temperature profile behind the bow shock, we measure the timescale for the electrons and ions to come back into thermal equilibrium. We rule out rapid thermal equilibration of the electrons with the shock-heated ions at the 6σ level. The observed temperature profile instead favours collisional equilibration. We find no evidence for electron heating over that produced by adiabatic compression. This supports the existing picture from collisionless shocks in the solar wind and supernova remnants. The upstream shock is consistent with this result but has a more complex structure, including a ∼ 2 keV increase in temperature ∼50 kpc ahead of the shock

    Single chemical entity legal highs: Assessing the risk for long term harm

    A recent and dramatic increase in the emergence of novel psychoactive substances ('legal highs') has left many governments unable to provide a timely response to an increasing number of potentially harmful drugs now available to the public. In response to this rapid increase in lawful drug use, the UK government intends to implement temporary class drug orders, whereby substances with a potential for misuse and harm can be regulated for a 12 month period. During this period an investigation of the potential for harms induced by these drugs will take place. However, the short time-frame in which information must be gathered, and the paucity of data available on novel psychoactive substances, means that robust pharmacological and toxicological analyses may be replaced by extrapolating data from illegal drugs with similar chemical structures. This review explores the potential pharmacology and toxicology of past and present 'legal highs' and discusses the risks of failing to carry out in-depth scientific research on individual substances. © 2012 Bentham Science Publishers

    Bayesian hierarchical modeling of longitudinal glaucomatous visual fields using a two-stage approach

    The Bayesian approach has become increasingly popular because it allows to fit quite complex models to data via Markov chain Monte Carlo sampling. However, it is also recognized nowadays that Markov chain Monte Carlo sampling can become computationally prohibitive when applied to a large data set. We encountered serious computational difficulties when fitting an hierarchical model to longitudinal glaucoma data of patients who participate in an ongoing Dutch study. To overcome this problem, we applied and extended a recently proposed two-stage approach to model these data. Glaucoma is one of the leading causes of blindness in the world. In order to detect deterioration at an early stage, a model for predicting visual fields (VFs) in time is needed. Hence, the true underlying VF progression can be determined, and treatment strategies can then be optimized to prevent further VF loss. Because we were unable to fit these data with the classical one-stage approach upon which the current popular Bayesian software is based, we made use of the two-stage Bayesian approach. The considered hierarchical longitudinal model involves estimating a large number of random effects and deals with censoring and high measurement variability.
