In the context of the 350th anniversary of the founding of Montreal, it might be useful to examine the evolution of telecommunications in this city by looking at both the progress of technology and the important figures who contributed to the development of these means of communication. In this article, the author shows that Montreal reacted rapidly to each technical innovation allowing it to develop the attributes essential to its socioeconomic growth and to become the cradle of the first radio station in the world

This paper traces the main steps of Augustin Frigon's career who has devoted the largest part of his life to the development of the national radiobroadcasting in Canada. The studies that he did in the United States and France as well as the positions he held at the École Polytechnique de MontrĂ©al will be used as a catalyst for his future administrative carreer in the radiobroadcasting sector. His nomination as member of the Royal Commission on Radiobroadcasting in 1928 (Aird Commission) is the starting point of his career. A few years later, Frigon was nominated as assistant director, and then later as director general of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. These two key positions allowed him to realize the initial plan proposed in the Aird report, that is to introduce new radiobroadcasting services (FM network, international service, short waves, etc.) and to play a major role during the international conferences on radio. Inevitably, such positions have brought Frigon to the fore front of the national broadcasting scene and, therefore, he found himself in the middle of the controversy on the 1942 plebiscite. The paper also underlines Frigon's role in the development of the French CBC network.

Learners as Learning Leaders: How Does Leadership for Learning Emerge Beyond the Traditional Teaching Models?

This E-book is a collection of outcome reports by thematic working groups (TWGs) of EDUsummIT2019 held from September 29 – October 2, 2019 in Quebec City, Canada. The theme of EDUsummIT2019, “Learners and learning contexts: new alignments for the digital age” was chosen to consider misalignments due to the consequences of changing knowledge representations, human computer interactions, blurring of formal and informal learning, changes in leadership patterns and many more emerging influences from IT. Thirteen TWGs discussed aspects of the overall them

AEDGE: Atomic Experiment for Dark Matter and Gravity Exploration in Space

    Get PDF
Abstract: We propose in this White Paper a concept for a space experiment using cold atoms to search for ultra-light dark matter, and to detect gravitational waves in the frequency range between the most sensitive ranges of LISA and the terrestrial LIGO/Virgo/KAGRA/INDIGO experiments. This interdisciplinary experiment, called Atomic Experiment for Dark Matter and Gravity Exploration (AEDGE), will also complement other planned searches for dark matter, and exploit synergies with other gravitational wave detectors. We give examples of the extended range of sensitivity to ultra-light dark matter offered by AEDGE, and how its gravitational-wave measurements could explore the assembly of super-massive black holes, first-order phase transitions in the early universe and cosmic strings. AEDGE will be based upon technologies now being developed for terrestrial experiments using cold atoms, and will benefit from the space experience obtained with, e.g., LISA and cold atom experiments in microgravity. Nous terminons notre analyse en soulignant l’appui de membres du clergĂ© catholique et d’hommes politiques face aux difficultĂ©s rencontrĂ©es par Adrien Pouliot comme membre du Bureau des gouverneurs lors de sa rĂ©Ă©lection en fĂ©vrier 1945.Our study proposes to highlight the support of the Catholic Church and the Conseil de la vie française as well as the major contribution of Paul-Émile Gosselin in the development of French radio in Canada during the 1940-1955 period. Through the struggles that have been going on at the technical, administrative, political and financial levels, representatives of the Catholic Church have intervened with the obvious aim of preserving the fundamental values of French Canadians, including language, culture and religion. The CKSB radio station, St. Boniface, Manitoba, opened in 1946, and serves as an anchor for our analysis. We are also highlighting the role of the Church in the 1944 fundraising campaign for the establishment of four stations in the West. We conclude our analysis by emphasizing the support of Catholic clergy and politicians for the difficulties faced by Adrien Pouliot as a member of the Board of Governors when he was re-elected in February 1945

This article traces the main events that made it possible to make a subscription for French radio in the West. Because of the support of the Catholic Church and social elites in French Canada as well as representatives of French-speaking communities in the United States, the 1945 subscription was a success. This concerted action is led by the Conseil de la vie française, a central body that serves the cause of French culture in Canada and the United States, as well as by Radio-Ouest-Française, which represents the three western provinces. The sums collected during the subscription are used to finance French radio stations outside Quebec and thus ensure the preservation of French Canadian identity and culture in the West
