    Con las nuevas tendencias turísticas, los visitantes que llegan hasta España no están buscando únicamente los tradicionales modelos como el “Turismo de Sol y Playa” sino que se encuentran motivados por otros atractivos como la gastronomía. Este fabuloso medio de diversión, muy en auge en nuestro país gracias a la cada vez mayor popularidad de sus regiones vinícolas y a los grandes maestros de la cocina, hacen que profesiones como la del guía turístico sufran una importante transformación y se tengan que adaptar a las necesidades de los visitantes que demandan este servicio. Hay dos regulaciones cuyo conocimiento es importante para conseguir una adaptación al marco legislativo en la citada profesión; estas son, por una parte, la habilitación como guía de turismo para la explicación en espacios culturales protegidos o Bienes de Interés Cultural y, por otra, tratando de evitar la conducción tras el consumo de alcohol, los guías son quienes trasportan a sus propios clientes en vehículos de turismo. ¿Está la legislación española adaptada a este tipo de actividad?     Logistic groups in the Republic of Panama

    A map of the logistic groups in the Republic of Panama and complementary maps of the distribution of the population density, GDP density, the economic activity "transport, storage and communications", and the primary and secondary road network are presented. The clusters of territorial groups on each map were analyzed and created using the "decision tree" data mining method in order to determine territorial groups with similar characteristics, including logistics infrastructure and nodes, socioeconomics and the environmental situation. At the reference scale of 1:800,000 these maps represent a planning tool to decision makers in land use matters

    Identification and characterization of laccase-type multicopper oxidases involved in dye-decolorization by the fungus Leptosphaerulina sp.

    13 p.-4 fig.-4 tab.[Background] Fungal laccases are multicopper oxidases (MCOs) with high biotechnological potential due to their capability to oxidize a wide range of aromatic contaminants using oxygen from the air. Albeit the numerous laccase-like genes described in ascomycete fungi, ascomycete laccases have been less thoroughly studied than white-rot basidiomycetous laccases. A variety of MCO genes has recently been discovered in plant pathogenic ascomycete fungi, however little is known about the presence and function of laccases in these fungi or their potential use as biocatalysts. We aim here to identify the laccase-type oxidoreductases that might be involved in the decolorization of dyes by Leptosphaerulina sp. and to characterize them as potential biotechnological tools.[Results] A Leptosphaerulina fungal strain, isolated from lignocellulosic material in Colombia, produces laccase as the main ligninolytic oxidoreductase activity during decolorization of synthetic organic dyes. Four laccase-type MCO genes were partially amplified from the genomic DNA using degenerate primers based on laccase-specific signature sequences. The phylogenetic analysis showed the clustering of Lac1, Lac4 and Lac3 with ascomycete laccases, whereas Lac2 grouped with fungal ferroxidases (together with other hypothetical laccases). Lac3, the main laccase produced by Leptosphaerulina sp. in dye decolorizing and laccase-induced cultures (according to the shotgun analysis of both secretomes) was purified and characterized in this study. It is a sensu-stricto laccase able to decolorize synthetic organic dyes with high efficiency particularly in the presence of natural mediator compounds.[Conclusions] The searching for laccase-type MCOs in ascomycetous families where their presence is poorly known, might provide a source of biocatalysts with potential biotechnological interest and shed light on their role in the fungus.     Power management techniques in an FPGA-Based WSN node for high performance application

    In this work, the power management techniques implemented in a high-performance node for Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) based on a RAM-based FPGA are presented. This new node custom architecture is intended for high-end WSN applications that include complex sensor management like video cameras, high compute demanding tasks such as image encoding or robust encryption, and/or higher data bandwidth needs. In the case of these complex processing tasks, yet maintaining low power design requirements, it can be shown that the combination of different techniques such as extensive HW algorithm mapping, smart management of power islands to selectively switch on and off components, smart and low-energy partial reconfiguration, an adequate set of save energy modes and wake up options, all combined, may yield energy results that may compete and improve energy usage of typical low power microcontrollers used in many WSN node architectures. Actually, results show that higher complexity tasks are in favor of HW based platforms, while the flexibility achieved by dynamic and partial reconfiguration techniques could be comparable to SW based solutions

    Depolymerisation of Kraft Lignin by Tailor-Made Alkaliphilic Fungal Laccases

    Lignins released in the black liquors of kraft pulp mills are an underutilised source of aromatics. Due to their phenol oxidase activity, laccases from ligninolytic fungi are suitable biocatalysts to depolymerise kraft lignins, which are characterised by their elevated phenolic content. However, the alkaline conditions necessary to solubilise kraft lignins make it difficult to use fungal laccases whose activity is inherently acidic. We recently developed through enzyme-directed evolution high-redox potential laccases active and stable at pH 10. Here, the ability of these tailor-made alkaliphilic fungal laccases to oxidise, demethylate, and depolymerise eucalyptus kraft lignin at pH 10 is evidenced by the increment in the content of phenolic hydroxyl and carbonyl groups, the methanol released, and the appearance of lower molecular weight moieties after laccase treatment. Nonetheless, in a second assay carried out with higher enzyme and lignin concentrations, these changes were accompanied by a strong increase in the molecular weight and content of β–O–4 and β–5 linkages of the main lignin fraction, indicating that repolymerisation of the oxidised products prevails in one-pot reactions. To prevent it, we finally conducted the enzymatic reaction in a bench-scale reactor coupled to a membrane separation system and were able to prove the depolymerisation of kraft lignin by high-redox alkaliphilic laccase

    Potential and practices of decentralised development cooperation: an international perspective

    Development cooperation is in a process of rethinking its objectives, agents and instruments, which must be adapted to address global challenges. In this framework, decentralized development cooperation is more relevant for its contribution in terms of experience and mutual learning than for its quantitative dimension. Cooperation promoted by sub-state entities, with a prominent presence of civil society, can contribute to less conditioned, more horizontal practices. A greater participation of different agents, who could contribute with their experience, can help to promote changes in coooperation processes. However, these potentialities run the risk of not materializing, and remain in good intentions. This study combines data on Official Development Assistance, and its classifications, with qualitative aspects that define decentralized cooperation and its practices, in countries where they have an established track record. A great diversity of practices is found depending on the cases, which could lead to exploring opportunities for instruments or practices from one place to another. The study also reflects the problem of metrics in these practices, which would require new monitoring and information frameworks adapted to them, not so focused on traditional information linked to aid.Funding for this study was received from the General Directorate for International Cooperation of the Gipuzkoa Provincial Council.     Assessing the capability of multi-scale drought datasets to quantify drought severity and to identify drought impacts: An example in the Ebro Basin

    Assessing the risk, the severity and the likely evolution of droughts are key tasks for improving preparedness of regions prone to drought conditions, and mitigation of drought consequences. The access to real-time and high-quality climatic information is essential for this purpose. Different climatic databases are being developed and made available on real time by climatic research institutions, but their capability for quantifying droughts characteristics including severity, or spatio-temporal variability, is uncertain given their low spatial resolution. In this study, we assessed the capability of three databases with contrasted spatial resolution for measuring spatial and temporal variability of drought occurrence. The standardized precipitation index, calculated for each database, showed that the low resolution datasets allow an acceptable measurement of the magnitude, intensity and duration of droughts, while failing mostly in detecting the spatial patterns of the specific drought episodes. Moreover, the capability of the datasets for assessing the impacts of droughts on surface hydrology and tree growth was examined.     Dual role of Apolipoprotein D as long-term instructive factor and acute signal conditioning microglial secretory and phagocytic responses

    Microglial cells are recognized as very dynamic brain cells, screening the environment and sensitive to signals from all other cell types in health and disease. Apolipoprotein D (ApoD), a lipid-binding protein of the Lipocalin family, is required for nervous system optimal function and proper development and maintenance of key neural structures. ApoD has a cell and state-dependent expression in the healthy nervous system, and increases its expression upon aging, damage or neurodegeneration. An extensive overlap exists between processes where ApoD is involved and those where microglia have an active role. However, no study has analyzed the role of ApoD in microglial responses. In this work, we test the hypothesis that ApoD, as an extracellular signal, participates in the intercellular crosstalk sensed by microglia and impacts their responses upon physiological aging or damaging conditions. We find that a significant proportion of ApoD-dependent aging transcriptome are microglia-specific genes, and show that lack of ApoD in vivo dysregulates microglial density in mouse hippocampus in an age-dependent manner. Murine BV2 and primary microglia do not express ApoD, but it can be internalized and targeted to lysosomes, where unlike other cell types it is transiently present. Cytokine secretion profiles and myelin phagocytosis reveal that ApoD has both long-term pre-conditioning effects on microglia as well as acute effects on these microglial immune functions, without significant modification of cell survival. ApoD-triggered cytokine signatures are stimuli (paraquat vs. Aβ oligomers) and sex-dependent. Acute exposure to ApoD induces microglia to switch from their resting state to a secretory and less phagocytic phenotype, while long-term absence of ApoD leads to attenuated cytokine induction and increased myelin uptake, supporting a role for ApoD as priming or immune training factor. This knowledge should help to advance our understanding of the complex responses of microglia during aging and neurodegeneration, where signals received along our lifespan are combined with damage-triggered acute signals, conditioning both beneficial roles and limitations of microglial functions

    Drought impacts on vegetation activity, growth and primary production in humid and arid ecosystems

    9 Pags., 5 Figs.[EN] We have evaluated the response of the Earth biomes to drought using a new global dataset that captures drought effects on vegetation at various time scales. We show that arid and humid biomes are both affected by drought, and that the time scale on which droughts most intensively affects vegetation plays a key role in determining the sensitivity of biomes to drought. Arid biomes respond to drought at short time scales because plants have mechanisms allowing them to rapidly adapt to changing water availability. Humid biomes also respond to drought at short time scales, probably because there plant species show a poor adaptability to water shortage. Sub-humid biomes respond to drought at long time scales because plants are adapted to withstand water deficit, but they lack the rapid post-drought recovery observed in arid biomes.[ES] En este trabajo se evalúa la respuesta de los diferentes biomas terrestre a la sequía mediante una base de datos nueva que captura el efecto de la sequía sobre la vegetación a diferentes escalas temporales. Se ha comprobado que los biomas característicos de zonas áridas y húmedas se ven afectados por la sequía, y que la escala temporal de la sequía juega un papel clave al determinar la sensibilidad de los biomas a la sequía. Los biomas áridos responden a las sequías medidas a escalas temporales cortas, debido a que las plantas tienen mecanismos que les permitan adaptarse rápidamente a la disponibilidad de agua. Los biomas húmedos también responden a la sequía a escalas temporales cortas, probablemente debido a que las especies ubicadas allí muestran una mala adaptación a la escasez de agua.
