External Load Monitoring in Female Basketball: A Systematic Review

    Get PDF
The primary aim of this systematic review was to summarize the current state of research in relation to external load monitoring in female basketball. The review was conducted according to the PRISMA-P® statement. Publications included in the review: 1) were original research, 2) evaluated healthy female basketball players, and 3) monitored basketball practice and competition. The STROBE scale was used to assess quality. A total of 40 publications were included. The external load was assessed during practice (n = 9), competition (n = 11) or both events (n = 8). Also, time- motion analysis was implemented in practice (n = 2), competition (n = 9), or both events (n = 1). Accelerometry (n = 28) and time-motion (n = 12) analysis were the most frequently used methods. However, a wide range in methods and variables were used to quantify the external load. Placement of devices on the upper back and measuring with a sampling frequency of 100 Hz were most common. Player Load (PL) values increased with the competitive level of players and were higher in competition compared to training. Small-sided games can be used to gradually increase loads in female basketball (PL 5v5: 34.8 ± 8, PL 3v3: 47.6 ± 7.4, TD 5v5: 209.2 ± 35.8 m, and TD 3v3: 249.3 ± 2.8 m). Tasks without defense seemed to be less demanding. More research is needed to reach a consensus on load control in women's basketball, on what data are important to collect, and how to use and transfer knowledge to stakeholders

Development of a New Method for the Determination of Manganese, Cadmium, Mercury and Lead in Whole Blood and Amniotic Fluid by Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry

Environmental exposure to metals among women, revealed their adverse effects on pregnancy. During this stage, blood levels of some metals increase so research on heavy metals transference from the mother’s blood to the developing foetus is of special interest and much attention has been paid to this matter. The amniotic fluid can be considered as a valuable marker of this prenatal exposure to exogenous factors. The aim of this study was to develop a method for the simultaneous determination of Mn, Cd, Hg, and Pb in whole maternal blood and amniotic fluid by ICP-MS. Strategies were given to minimise memory effects related to mercury and two widespread digestion procedures (open-vessel and microwave-assisted) were compared. Several quality controls, such as methodological and reagent blanks, spiked samples and duplicates were used to test the goodness of the developed method. Once optimised, the method was applied for the monitoring of Mn, Cd, Hg and Pb in 15 maternal blood and amniotic fluid samples obtained at delivery after informed consent. This study establishes that heavy metals pass into and accumulate in amniotic fluid and maternal blood. Thus, mean concentrations of Mn were similar in the two biological fluids studied, 21.6 ng/mL in maternal blood and 20.5 ng/mL in amniotic fluid. Mean Cd and mercury levels in blood and amniotic fluid were 1.3 and 6.3 ng/mL and 3.4 and 3.8 ng/mL, respectively. Concentrations of Pb were 16.4 ng/mL in blood and 13.7 ng/mL in amniotic fluid. Further studies are needed to evaluate the long-term health effects derived from this exposure.Plan Propio of the University of SevilleFundación Farmacéutica Avenzoa

The main aim of the present study was to compare the effects of flywheel strength training and traditional strength training on fitness attributes. Thirty-six well trained junior basketball players (n = 36; 17.58 ± 0.50 years) were recruited and randomly allocated into: Flywheel group (FST; n = 12), traditional strength training group (TST; n = 12) and control group (CON; n = 12). All groups attended 5 basketball practices and one official match a week during the study period. Experimental groups additionally participated in the eight-week, 1–2 d/w equivolume intervention conducted using a flywheel device (inertia = 0.075 kg·m−2) for FST or free weights (80%1 RM) for TST. Pre-to post changes in lower limb isometric strength (ISOMET), 5 and 20 m sprint time (SPR5m and SPR20m), countermovement jump height (CMJ) and change of direction ability (t-test) were assessed with analyses of variance (3 × 2 ANOVA). Significant group-by-time interaction was found for ISOMET (F = 6.40; p = 0.000), CMJ (F = 7.45; p = 0.001), SPR5m (F = 7.45; p = 0.010) and T test (F = 10.46; p = 0.000). The results showed a significantly higher improvement in CMJ (p = 0.006; 11.7% vs. 6.8%), SPR5m (p = 0.001; 10.3% vs. 5.9%) and t-test (p = 0.045; 2.4% vs. 1.5%) for FST compared to the TST group. Simultaneously, th FST group had higher improvement in ISOMET (p = 0.014; 18.7% vs. 2.9%), CMJ (p = 0.000; 11.7% vs. 0.3%), SPR5m (p = 0.000; 10.3% vs. 3.4%) and t-test (p = 0.000; 2.4% vs. 0.6%) compared to the CON group. Players from the TST group showed better results in CMJ (p = 0.006; 6.8% vs. 0.3%) and t-test (p = 0.018; 1.5% vs. 0.6%) compared to players from the CON group. No significant group-by-time interaction was found for sprint 20 m (F = 2.52; p = 0.088). Eight weeks of flywheel training (1–2 sessions per week) performed at maximum concentric intensity induces superior improvements in CMJ, 5 m sprint time and change of direction ability than equivolumed traditional weight training in well trained junior basketball players. Accordingly, coaches and trainers could be advised to use flywheel training for developing power related performance attributes in young basketball players

Monitoring Internal Load in Women’s Basketball via Subjective and Device-Based Methods: A Systematic Review

The monitoring of internal load in basketball can be used to understand the effects and potential physiological adaptations caused by external load. The main aim of this systematic review was to identify the methods and variables used to quantify internal load in female basketball. The studies included different populations and events: youth athletes, elite, and amateur players. Subjective methods included using the rating of perceived exertion (RPE) method, and sensor-based methods included monitoring the cardiac response to exercise, using heart rate (HR) as the primary metric. The results showed that the HRAvg exhibited a wider range of values during training than during competition, and different metrics were used to evaluate internal load, such as HRMax, HRmin, %HRMax, total time and % of time spent in different HR zones (2–8 zones), Banister’s TRIMP, and summated HR zones. RPE and HR metrics were the most commonly used methods. However, the use of multiple metrics with little standardization resulted in significant heterogeneity among studies, limiting meaningful comparisons. The review provides a reference for current research on female basketball. Future research could address this limitation by adopting more consistent measurement protocols standardizing the use of metrics.J.E-L. was a predoctoral researcher supported by a grant within the field of physical education, physical activity, and sports and its applied sciences given to the National Institute of Physical Education of Catalonia (INEFC), University of Barcelona (UB) (2020 PINEFC 00012). Structure, dielectric relaxation and electrical conductivity of 2,3,7,8-Tetramethoxychalcogenanthrene-2,3-dichloro-5,6-dicyano-1,4-benzoquinone 1:1 charger-transfer complexes

[EN] 2,3,7,8-Tetramethoxychalcogenanthrenes (5,10-chalcogena-cyclo-diveratrylenes, 'Vn(2)E(2)', E = S, Se) form isotypical 1:1 charge-transfer (CT) complexes with 2,3-dichloro-5,6-dicyano-1,4-benzoquinone (DDQ). X-ray analysis of Vn(2)S(2) . DDQ shows the compound to have a columnar structure with segregated stacks of donors and acceptors. The donors are virtually planar in accordance with a formulation of [Vn(2)E(2)](+)[DDQ](-). Donor cations and acceptor anions are equidistant in their respective stacks, but in each case they inclined to the stacking axis, nevertheless guaranteeing an optimum overlap of the half-filled frontier orbitals which are of pi-type character according to MNDO calculations. Dielectric ac measurements of permittivity epsilon' and loss factor E '' clearly reveal two processes, a dielectric one at low temperatures and a conductive one at high temperatures. The dielectric process can be described by the Havriliak-Negami (HN) and the Kohlrausch-Williams-Watts (KWW) model, and the conductive process by a Debye-type plot. Using these methods, the relevant parameters are evaluated. The de conductivities of polycrystalline samples moulded at 10(8) Pa show a temperature dependence in the plots of ln sigma vs. T-1, which is typical of semiconductors. Two slopes are found; that in the low-temperature region (<285 K) is explained by an easy-path model (intragrain conductivity with low activation energies), whereas in the high-temperature region conduction across the grain boundaries (with higher activation energies) is becoming predominant. The activation energies for the intrinsic conductivities obtained by the ac and de measurements are similar. Despite the columnar structure with segregated stacks, due to stoichiometric oxidation states of the components, the absolute values of conductivity are low ten. 10(-6) S cm(-1) at 293 K), though higher (by a factor of ca. 10(3)) than those of compounds like Vn(2)E(2) . Aplastic anemia and severe pancytopenia during treatment with peg-interferon, ribavirin and telaprevir for chronic hepatitis C

    Get PDF
Telaprevir and Boceprevir are the first direct acting antivirals approved for chronic hepatitis C in combination with peg-interferon alfa and ribavirin. Pancytopenia due to myelotoxicity caused by these drugs may occur, but severe hematological abnormalities or aplastic anemia (AA) have not been described. We collected all cases of severe pancytopenia observed during triple therapy with telaprevir in four Spanish centers since approval of the drug in 2011. Among 142 cirrhotic patients receiving treatment, 7 cases of severe pancytopenia (5%) were identified and three were consistent with the diagnosis of AA. Mean age was 59 years, five patients had compensated cirrhosis and two patients had severe hepatitis C recurrence after liver transplantation. Severe pancytopenia was diagnosed a median of 10 wk after the initiation of therapy. Three patients had pre-treatment hematological abnormalities related to splenomegaly. In six patients, antiviral treatment was interrupted at the onset of hematological abnormalities. Two patients died due to septic complications and one patient due to acute alveolar hemorrhage. The remaining patients recovered. Severe pancytopenia and especially AA, are not rare during triple therapy with telaprevir in patients with advanced liver disease. Close monitoring is imperative in this setting to promptly detect serious hematological disorders and to prevent further complications

CD13 as a new tumor target for antibody-drug conjugates: validation with the conjugate MI130110

    Get PDF
BACKGROUND: In the search for novel antibody-drug conjugates (ADCs) with therapeutic potential, it is imperative to identify novel targets to direct the antibody moiety. CD13 seems an attractive ADC target as it shows a differential pattern of expression in a variety of tumors and cell lines and it is internalized upon engagement with a suitable monoclonal antibody. PM050489 is a marine cytotoxic compound tightly binding tubulin and impairing microtubule dynamics which is currently undergoing clinical trials for solid tumors. METHODS: Anti-CD13 monoclonal antibody (mAb) TEA1/8 has been used to prepare a novel ADC, MI130110, by conjugation to the marine compound PM050489. In vitro and in vivo experiments have been carried out to demonstrate the activity and specificity of MI130110. RESULTS: CD13 is readily internalized upon TEA1/8 mAb binding, and the conjugation with PM050489 did not have any effect on the binding or the internalization of the antibody. MI130110 showed remarkable activity and selectivity in vitro on CD13-expressing tumor cells causing the same effects than those described for PM050489, including cell cycle arrest at G2, mitosis with disarrayed and often multipolar spindles consistent with an arrest at metaphase, and induction of cell death. In contrast, none of these toxic effects were observed in CD13-null cell lines incubated with MI130110. Furthermore, in vivo studies showed that MI130110 exhibited excellent antitumor activity in a CD13-positive fibrosarcoma xenograft murine model, with total remissions in a significant number of the treated animals. Mitotic catastrophes, typical of the payload mechanism of action, were also observed in the tumor cells isolated from mice treated with MI130110. In contrast, MI130110 failed to show any activity in a xenograft mouse model of myeloma cells not expressing CD13, thereby corroborating the selectivity of the ADC to its target and its stability in circulation. CONCLUSION: Our results show that MI130110 ADC combines the antitumor potential of the PM050489 payload with the selectivity of the TEA1/8 monoclonal anti-CD13 antibody and confirm the correct intracellular processing of the ADC. These results demonstrate the suitability of CD13 as a novel ADC target and the effectiveness of MI130110 as a promising antitumor therapeutic agent. This work was partially supported by grant IPT-2012-0198-090000 (“MARINMAB” project) from Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad (MINECO) and European Regional Development’s funds (ERDF) and by CSIC grant 2019AEP146.S

Granular cell tumor of the larynx. Report of two cases

[EN] Introduction and objective: The granular cell tumor is an uncommon, usually benign neoplasm that may originate from different anatomical sites. 50% of cases are located in the head; the larynx is involved in 3-10% of the cases. Controversy exists as to the etiology and histological origin. Surgery is the treatment of the choice. Case description: Male patient 57 years old with longstanding hoarseness. On physical examination a benign looking lesion is found in the left glottis. 45 year old woman with longstanding hoarseness, habitual smoker. She shows a cystic area in the middle third of the right vocal fold reaching the vocal ligament. Both patients undergo laryngeal microsurgery to remove the lesions and pathologic report is granular cell tumor. Discussion: A review of the literature was performed noting that it is an extremely rare, specially in the larynx. The endoscopic appearance is that of a laryngeal benign lesion and its treatment of choice is surgery with wide margins. Conclusions: The granular cell tumor is a rare neoplasm especially in larynx that should be considered in the differential diagnosis of laryngeal masses. The treatment is surgery, with a low rate of recurrence and the risk of malignant transformation is exceptional though it is described.[ES] Introducción y objetivo: El tumor de células granulares es una neoplasia infrecuente, usualmente benigna que se puede originar en diferentes sitios anatómicos.
