    The Influence of Molecular Adsorption on Elongating Gold Nanowires

    Using molecular dynamics simulations, we study the impact of physisorbing adsorbates on the structural and mechanical evolution of gold nanowires (AuNWs) undergoing elongation. We used various adsorbate models in our simulations, with each model giving rise to a different surface coverage and mobility of the adsorbed phase. We find that the local structure and mobility of the adsorbed phase remains relatively uniform across all segments of an elongating AuNW, except for the thinning region of the wire where the high mobility of Au atoms disrupts the monolayer structure, giving rise to higher solvent mobility. We analyzed the AuNW trajectories by measuring the ductile elongation of the wires and detecting the presence of characteristic structural motifs that appeared during elongation. Our findings indicate that adsorbates facilitate the formation of high-energy structural motifs and lead to significantly higher ductile elongations. In particular, our simulations result in a large number of monatomic chains and helical structures possessing mechanical stability in excess of what we observe in vacuum. Conversely, we find that a molecular species that interacts weakly (i.e., does not adsorb) with AuNWs worsens the mechanical stability of monatomic chains.Comment: To appear in Journal of Physical Chemistry

    Law, necropolitics and the stop and search of young people

    Stop and search can harm young people, damage relations between police and the community and alienate ethnic and racial minorities. In Mohidin and another v Commissioner of the Police of the Metropolis and others, a group of minors who had been stopped, searched and, in some cases, falsely imprisoned, assaulted and racially abused by officers, were awarded damages for the distress and pain suffered. In this article, the case will be read not for the tortious legal consequences of police actions towards youth, or members of the public in general, nor for the culpability of any of the parties concerned, but for how the use of ‘lawful’ police powers on young people was framed and justified by both officers and the courts. It is argued that the punitive function of such powers has been underexplored by criminologists, and that the authorization and legitimization of such tactics, routinely defended as a ‘necessary’ crime prevention tool, can be understood as an instantiation of ‘necropolitics’

    Increased dietary protein in the second trimester of gestation increases live weight gain and carcass composition in weaner calves to 6 months of age

    Genetically similar nulliparous Polled Hereford heifers from a closed pedigree herd were used to evaluate the effects of dietary protein during the first and second trimester of gestation upon fetal, placental and postnatal growth. Heifers were randomly allocated into two groups at 35d post AI (35dpc) to a single bull and fed High (15.7%CP) or Low (5.9%CP) protein in the first trimester (T1). At 90dpc, half of each nutritional treatment group changed to a High or Low protein diet for the second trimester until 180dpc (T2). High protein intake in the second trimester increased birthweight in females (P = 0.05) but there was no effect of treatment upon birthweight when taken over both sexes. Biparietal diameter was significantly increased by high protein in the second trimester with the effect being greater in the female (P = 0.02) but also significant overall (P = 0.05). Placental weight was positively correlated with birth weight, fibroblast volume, and relative blood vessel volume (P < 0.05). Placental fibroblast density was increased and trophoblast volume decreased in the high protein first trimester treatment group (P <0.05). There was a trend for placental weight to be increased by high protein in the second trimester (P = 0.06). Calves from heifers fed the high protein treatment in the second trimester weighed significantly more on all occasions preweaning (at one month (P = 0.0004), 2 mths (P = 0.006), 3 mths (P = 0.002), 4 mths (P = 0.01), 5 mths (P = 41 0.03), 6 mths (P = 0.001)), and grew at a faster rate over the 6 month period. By 6 mths of age the calves from heifers fed high nutrition in the second trimester weighed 33kg heavier than those fed the low diet in the second trimester. These results suggest that dietary protein in early pregnancy alters the development of the bovine placenta and calf growth to weaning

    Polygenic transmission disequilibrium confirms that common and rare variation act additively to create risk for autism spectrum disorders

    Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) risk is influenced by common polygenic and de novo variation. We aimed to clarify the influence of polygenic risk for ASD and to identify subgroups of ASD cases, including those with strongly acting de novo variants, in which polygenic risk is relevant. Using a novel approach called the polygenic transmission disequilibrium test and data from 6,454 families with a child with ASD, we show that polygenic risk for ASD, schizophrenia, and greater educational attainment is over-transmitted to children with ASD. These findings hold independent of proband IQ. We find that polygenic variation contributes additively to risk in ASD cases who carry a strongly acting de novo variant. Lastly, we show that elements of polygenic risk are independent and differ in their relationship with phenotype. These results confirm that the genetic influences on ASD are additive and suggest that they create risk through at least partially distinct etiologic pathways

    Epigenetics and developmental programming of welfare and production traits in farm animals

    The concept that postnatal health and development can be influenced by events that occur in utero originated from epidemiological studies in humans supported by numerous mechanistic (including epigenetic) studies in a variety of model species. Referred to as the ‘developmental origins of health and disease’ or ‘DOHaD’ hypothesis, the primary focus of large-animal studies until quite recently had been biomedical. Attention has since turned towards traits of commercial importance in farm animals. Herein we review the evidence that prenatal risk factors, including suboptimal parental nutrition, gestational stress, exposure to environmental chemicals and advanced breeding technologies, can determine traits such as postnatal growth, feed efficiency, milk yield, carcass composition, animal welfare and reproductive potential. We consider the role of epigenetic and cytoplasmic mechanisms of inheritance, and discuss implications for livestock production and future research endeavours. We conclude that although the concept is proven for several traits, issues relating to effect size, and hence commercial importance, remain. Studies have also invariably been conducted under controlled experimental conditions, frequently assessing single risk factors, thereby limiting their translational value for livestock production. We propose concerted international research efforts that consider multiple, concurrent stressors to better represent effects of contemporary animal production systems

    Phenotypic Variation in Retail Beef Yield in Angus Cattle

    This paper reports preliminary estimates of phenotypic variation and relationships for carcase traits using records from 386 Angus steers. Carcase traits recorded included carcase weight (CWT), retail beef yield (RBY), carcase intramuscular fat (CIMF), carcase P8 fat (CP8), carcase rib fat (CRIB) and carcase eye muscle area (CEMA). Carcase trait averages for animals used in this study were higher than for those used for the previous estimation of RBY parameters, and the differences evident between summary statistics for historic and contemporary carcase traits records highlights the value of continually recording carcase traits, as well as the value of re-examining relationships between carcase traits. Phenotypic correlations between carcase traits indicated that animals with higher RBY also had, phenotypically, heavier CWT (rₚ = 0.12), larger CEMA (rₚ = 0.31), lower CRIB and CP8 (rₚ = -0.28 and -0.10 respectively) and lower CIMF (rₚ = -0.16). For every 1-kg increase in RBY EBV, recorded CWT, RBY and CEMA were greater by 2.08kg, 0.24% and 2.77cm², respectively. In contrast, for every 1-kg increase in RBY EBV, recorded CIMF, CRIB and CP8 were lower by 0.39%, 1.31mm and 1.81mm, respectively. These preliminary results highlight the importance of continually recording carcase traits as well as the value of periodically re-examining relationships between carcase traits
