    Digital flexor tendon contracture treated by tenectomy: different clinical presentations in three cats

    Case series summary Three cats, Siamese or Siamese cross, were presented with a chronic thoracic limb weightbearing lameness. Previous anti-inflammatory administrations were unable to improve lameness consistently in the three cats. Two of the three cats had undergone onychectomy several years before presentation. A permanent flexion of the proximal interphalangeal joint of one or more digits, associated with a difficult and painful extension of the proximal interphalangeal joint, was noticed during orthopedic examination. A digital flexor tendon contracture was suspected and confirmed with radiographic examination. Surgical exploration was then performed. For all cats, treatment consisted of a tenectomy or tenotomy of the superficial and deep digital flexor tendons in order to release the contracture. The three cats responded well to the surgical treatment and became sound around 2–4 weeks after surgery. Relevance and novel information Digital flexor tendon contracture is rarely reported as a cause of lameness in cats. It should be considered in a differential diagnosis of feline lameness whenever onychectomy has been performed in the past. The precise etiology that explains this tendon contracture is unknown, but trauma or breed predisposition could represent potential causes

    Inorganic arsenic speciation in the waters of the Penzé estuary (NW France): Seasonal variations and fluxes to the coastal area

    International audienceOver this one-year study, the variations of inorganic As species were examined monthly along the salinity gradient of the Penzé estuary (NW France) in relation with different biogeochemical parameters. In most cases, dissolved As exhibited a non-conservative behaviour which resulted from the competition between two major processes. In the upstream section of the estuary, a strong input of both total inorganic As and As(III) occurred. Then, the removal of the same species, under precipitation of iron oxides/oxyhydroxides, was observed in the low-salinity range (S < 10). Using our experimental data, the fluxes of the various As species were estimated for the first time in estuarine waters. Inputs from the river were mainly constituted of particulate As (w70%). Conversely, dissolved species were predominant in the net fluxes (w65%) and As(III) accounted for w15% of the dissolved net flux

    International audienceOver one year study (12 campaigns), particulate arsenic and dissolved inorganic arsenic (total inorganic Asi and arsenite As(III)) levels were determined along the whole salinity gradient of the Penzé estuary (12 stations) in Brittany (France). Concentrations, in the range 2-26 nM and 3-56 μg g− 1 for dissolved inorganic and particulate arsenic, respectively, were relatively high in comparison to pristine systems and were attributed to pig and poultry farming activities taking place in the catchment area. Our results show that variations of dissolved inorganic and particulate arsenic up to mid-estuary were significantly linked to fluvial inputs, these latter being controlled by water discharge and precipitations. Arsenite variations over a large salinity range (S > 4) were controlled by those of the marine end-member mainly through bacterial processes. Removal of dissolved species within the water column by adsorption on oxide material was found to be minimal while arsenic fluxes from the sediment control arsenate and arsenite levels in the upper part of the estuary

    The removal of colloidal lead during estuarine mixing: seasonal variations and importance of iron oxides and humic substances

    International audienceIn the present study, seven colloidal fractions of lead (Pb) were analysed along the mixing zone of the Penzé estuary over the Year 2009, with the aim to provide some insight into the mechanism that removes the metal from the 300 kDa) and was removed in the salinity range 0-10 from all of the size fractions where it was significantly found. Because the colloidal fractionation of Pb was strongly linked to that of iron (Fe) and humic substances (HS), the removal of Pb in the mixing area must occur under flocculation of organomineral complexes. A key period corresponding to the first strong autumnal precipitations was also revealed in the present work. At this time of the year, the mobilisation of Pb (and Fe) from catchment soils is enhanced by the mobilisation of HS and the metal is associated with smaller colloids (30-300 kDa)

    International audienceAbstract Castration resistance in prostate cancer (PCa) constitutes an advanced, aggressive disease with poor prognosis, associated with uncontrolled cell proliferation, resistance to apoptosis, and enhanced invasive potential. The molecular mechanisms involved in the transition of PCa to castration resistance are obscure. Here, we report that the nonselective cationic channel transient receptor potential vanilloid 2 (TRPV2) is a distinctive feature of castration-resistant PCa. TRPV2 transcript levels were higher in patients with metastatic cancer (stage M1) compared with primary solid tumors (stages T2a and T2b). Previous studies of the TRPV2 channel indicated that it is primarily involved in cancer cell migration and not in cell growth. Introducing TRPV2 into androgen-dependent LNCaP cells enhanced cell migration along with expression of invasion markers matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) 9 and cathepsin B. Consistent with the likelihood that TRPV2 may affect cancer cell aggressiveness by influencing basal intracellular calcium levels, small interfering RNA–mediated silencing of TRPV2 reduced the growth and invasive properties of PC3 prostate tumors established in nude mice xenografts, and diminished expression of invasive enzymes MMP2, MMP9, and cathepsin B. Our findings establish a role for TRPV2 in PCa progression to the aggressive castration-resistant stage, prompting evaluation of TRPV2 as a potential prognostic marker and therapeutic target in the setting of advanced PCa.     Persistent headaches one year after bacterial meningitis: prevalence, determinants and impact on quality of life

    International audienceBackground: Little is known on headaches long-term persistence after bacterial meningitis and on their impact on patients' quality of life.Methods: In an ancillary study of the French national prospective cohort of community-acquired bacterial meningitis in adults (COMBAT) conducted between February 2013 and July 2015, we collected self-reported headaches before, at onset, and 12 months (M12) after meningitis. Determinants of persistent headache (PH) at M12, their association with M12 quality of life (SF 12), depression (Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale) and neuro-functional disability were analysed.Results: Among the 277 alive patients at M12 87/274 (31.8%), 213/271 (78.6%) and 86/277 (31.0%) reported headaches before, at the onset, and at M12, respectively. In multivariate analysis, female sex (OR: 2.75 [1.54-4.90]; p < 0.001), pre-existing headaches before meningitis (OR: 2.38 [1.32-4.30]; p < 0.01), higher neutrophilic polynuclei percentage in the CSF of the initial lumbar puncture (OR: 1.02 [1.00-1.04]; p < 0.05), and brain abscess during the initial hospitalisation (OR: 8.32 [1.97-35.16]; p < 0.01) were associated with M12 persistent headaches. Neither the responsible microorganism, nor the corticoids use were associated with M12 persistent headaches. M12 neuro-functional disability (altered Glasgow Outcome Scale; p < 0.01), M12 physical handicap (altered modified Rankin score; p < 0.001), M12 depressive symptoms (p < 0.0001), and M12 altered physical (p < 0.05) and mental (p < 0.0001) qualities of life were associated with M12 headaches.Conclusion: Persistent headaches are frequent one year after meningitis and are associated with quality of life alteration
