    To CHAE or Not to CHAE

    Many certifications are available in many professions. They represent a level of achievement and provide a dimension of professionalism to a resume. This article reveals the results of research covering the degree the extent of certification of members of the Hospitality Financial & Technology Professionals. Further, obstacles and assists in taking the examination to become a Certified Hospitality Accountant Executive (CHAE) were determined. Thirty-seven percent of the respondents have earned their CHAE. The biggest obstacle to taking the exam according to 60% of the respondents who have not earned the CHAE was lack of time to prepare. The biggest assist according to this same group would be an on-line CHAE preparation course

    Vibration suppression and coupled interaction study in milling of thin wall casings in the presence of tuned mass dampers

    Damping of machining vibrations in thin-wall structures is an important area of research due to the ever-increasing use of lightweight structures such as jet engine casings. Published literature has focussed on passive/active damping solutions for open geometry structure (e.g. cantilever thin wall), whereas more challenging situations such as closed geometry structures (e.g. thin wall ring-type casings) were not taken into consideration. In this study, a passive damping solution in the form of tuned viscoelastic dampers is studied to minimise the vibration of thin wall casings while focussing on the change in coupled interaction between tool and workpiece due to added tuned dampers. Finite element simulation was carried out to evaluate the effectiveness of tuned dampers in single impact excitation, and this was further validated experimentally through modal impact testing. A reduction in root mean square value, with tuned dampers, of about 2.5 and 4 times is noted at higher and lower depths of cut, respectively, indicating a moderate dependency on depth of cut. A change in coupled interaction of workpiece with tool’s torsional mode (in undamped state) to that of tool’s bending mode (with tuned dampers) was also noted. Variation in machined wall thickness of the order of 6 mm is noted due to the change in coupled interaction from torsional mode to bending mode of tool

    Swietenia mahagoni is a timber forestry plants have allelopathy toxic, can interfere with the growth of surrounding plants. This study aimed to determine the effects of extracts from various parts of Swietenia mahagoni on seed germination of green beans and corn. This research was conducted at the Laboratory of Silviculture, an extract from a litter, fresh leaves, bark and roots of the Swietenia mahagoni plant and given to the seed germination green beans and corn. The results showed that the extract of fresh leaves and roots Swietenia mahagoni inhibit seed germination green beans and corn, while the provision of litter no effect. Green bean seed has a higher durability of the maize seed to allelopathy of root Swietenia mahagoni

    A stable temperature may favour continuous reproduction by Theodoxus fluviatilis and explain its high densities in some karstic springs

    Theodoxus fluviatilis is a common gastropod in many karstic springs in central Portugal. We investigated the possible reasons for the near-total restriction of this species to these springs. We first determined the spatial distribution of the species within a spring (Anços) and related the densities at sampling-patch scales to selected physical and chemical variables. We then determined the densities at several locations downstream from the spring and related these densities to selected physical and chemical variables. Finally, we assessed the population dynamics of the gastropod in the spring. In the spring, T. fluviatilis was more abundant in shallow areas with a rapid current and cobble-boulder substrates. In June-July 2006, the mean densities of T. fluviatilis in the spring varied from ~ 10 to ~ 9000 individuals m-2 but decreased to zero 3800 m downstream. The physical and chemical changes along the stretch studied were minor; no significant correlations (Spearman rank correlation; p > 0.05) were observed between the gastropod abundances and the measured environmental variables or the PCA axes. In the spring, juveniles and egg masses were observed year-round, suggesting continuous reproduction. The temperature at the spring was fairly constant, ranging from 15.3 to 16.6 ºC during the year (daily variation 0.05) entre la abundancia de T. fluviatilis y las variables ambientales o los ejes de Análisis de Componentes Principales. En el manantial, juveniles y masas de huevos fueron observadas durante todo el año y no se obsevaron cohortes, sugeriendo reproducción contínua. La temperatura en el manantial varió entre 15.3 y 16.6 ºC durante todo el año (variación diaria < 0.1 ºC). Novecientos metros río abajo las variaciones térmicas diarias llegaron a los 5 ºC. Proponemos pues que la elevada densidad de T. fluviatilis en el manantial kárstico de Anços se mantiene gracias a las temperaturas elevadas y constantes que favorecen su continua reproducción

    Thermographic imaging in sports and exercise medicine: A Delphi study and consensus statement on the measurement of human skin temperature

Recently, its use has been increasing in sports and exercise medicine; however, no consensus guideline exists to address the methods for collecting data in such situations. The aim of this study was to develop a checklist for the collection of tsk using IRT in sports and exercise medicine. We carried out a Delphi study to set a checklist based on consensus agreement from leading experts in the field. Panelists (n  =  24) representing the areas of sport science (n = 8; 33%), physiology (n = 7; 29%), physiotherapy (n = 3; 13%) and medicine (n = 6; 25%), from 13 different countries completed the Delphi process. An initial list of 16 points was proposed which was rated and commented on by panelists in three rounds of anonymous surveys following a standard Delphi procedure. The panel reached consensus on 15 items which encompassed the participants’ demographic information, camera/room or environment setup and recording/analysis of tsk using IRT. The results of the Delphi produced the checklist entitled “Thermographic Imaging in Sports and Exercise Medicine (TISEM)” which is a proposal to standardize the collection and analysis of tsk data using IRT. It is intended that the TISEM can also be applied to evaluate bias in thermographic studies and to guide practitioners in the use of this technique.Published versio

    A two-centred pragmatic randomised controlled trial of two interventions of postnatal support

    Objectives: To establish whether providing additional postnatal support during the early postnatal months influences women's physical and psychological health and to identify health service benefits. Design: Pragmatic randomised controlled trial with a 2 × 2 factorial design with two interventions. Setting: Community centres, Ayrshire and Grampian, Scotland. Population: One thousand and four primiparous women, 83% completed the baseline questionnaire, 71% at six months. Methods: (1) An invitation to a local postnatal support group run weekly with a facilitator, starting two weeks postpartum. (2) A postnatal support manual, posted two weeks postpartum. Main outcome measures: Data regarding primary outcome postnatal depression (Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale, EPDS), secondary outcomes, general health measures (SF-36), social support (SSQ6), use of health services and women's views of interventions were collected at two weeks postpartum and at three and six months. Results: There were no significant differences in EPDS scores between the control and trial arms at three and six months, nor were there differences in the SF-36 and the SSQ6 scores. The 95% CI for the difference in EPDS effectively excluded a change in mean score of more than 10% with either intervention. There were no differences in health service attendances in primary or secondary care between the control and trial arms. Of those women who attended the groups, 40% attended six or more. Women reported favourably on the ‘pack’ with the majority reading it a few times and feeling that it was aimed at them. Conclusions: Wide-scale provision by the National Health Service of either support groups or self-help manuals is not appropriate if the aim is to improve measurable health outcomes
