    QMUL-SDS at CheckThat! 2021: Enriching pre-trained language models for the estimation of check-worthiness of Arabic tweets

    This paper describes our submission to the CheckThat! Lab at CLEF 2021, where we participated in Subtask 1A (check-worthy claim detection) in Arabic. We introduce our approach to estimate the checkworthiness of tweets as a ranking task. In our approach, we propose to fine-tune state-of-art transformer based models for Arabic such as AraBERTv0.2-base as well as to leverage additional training data from last year's shared task (CheckThat! Lab 2020) along with the dataset provided this year. According to the official evaluation, our submission obtained a joint 4th position in the competition where seven other groups participated

    STUDY QUESTION: What recommendations can be provided on the approach to and use of time-lapse technology (TLT) in an IVF laboratory?SUMMARY ANSWER: The present ESHRE document provides 11 recommendations on how to introduce TLT in the IVF laboratory. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: Studies have been published on the use of TLT in clinical embryology. However, a systematic assessmentof how to approach and introduce this technology is currently missing.STUDY DESIGN, SIZE, DURATION: A working group of members of the Steering Committee of the ESHRE Special Interest Group in Embryology and selected ESHRE members was formed in order to write recommendations on the practical aspects of TLT for the IVF laboratory.PARTICIPANTS/MATERIALS, SETTING, METHODS: The working group included 11 members of different nationalities with internationally recognized experience in clinical embryology and basic science embryology, in addition to TLT. This document is developed according to the manual for development of ESHRE recommendations for good practice. Where possible, the statements are supported by studies retrieved from a PUBMED literature search on ‘time-lapse’ and ART.MAIN RESULTS AND THE ROLE OF CHANCE: A clear clinical benefit of the use of TLT, i.e. an increase in IVF success rates, remains to be proven. Meanwhile, TLT systems are being introduced in IVF laboratories. The working group listed 11 recommendations on what to do before introducing TLT in the lab. These statements include an assessment of the pros and cons of acquiring a TLT system, selection of relevant morphokinetic parameters, selection of an appropriate TLT system with technical and customer support, development of an internal checklist and education of staff. All these aspects are explained further here, based on the current literature and expert opinion.LIMITATIONS, REASONS FOR CAUTION: Owing to the limited evidence available, recommendations are mostly based on clinical and technical expertise. The paper provides technical advice, but leaves any decision on whether or not to use TLT to the individual centres.WIDER IMPLICATIONS OF THE FINDINGS: This document is expected to have a significant impact on future developments of clinical embryology, considering the increasing role and impact of TLT

    Good practice recommendations on add-ons in reproductive medicine

    STUDY QUESTION: Which add-ons are safe and effective to be used in ART treatment? SUMMARY ANSWER: Forty-two recommendations were formulated on the use of add-ons in the diagnosis of fertility problems, the IVF laboratory and clinical management of IVF treatment. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: The innovative nature of ART combined with the extremely high motivation of the patients has opened the door to the wide application of what has become known as 'add-ons' in reproductive medicine. These supplementary options are available to patients in addition to standard fertility procedures, typically incurring an additional cost. A diverse array of supplementary options is made available, encompassing tests, drugs, equipment, complementary or alternative therapies, laboratory procedures, and surgical interventions. These options share the common aim of stating to enhance pregnancy or live birth rates, mitigate the risk of miscarriage, or expedite the time to achieving pregnancy. STUDY DESIGN, SIZE, DURATION: ESHRE aimed to develop clinically relevant and evidence-based recommendations focusing on the safety and efficacy of add-ons currently used in fertility procedures in order to improve the quality of care for patients with infertility. PARTICIPANTS/MATERIALS, SETTING, METHODS: ESHRE appointed a European multidisciplinary working group consisting of practising clinicians, embryologists, and researchers who have demonstrated leadership and expertise in the care and research of infertility. Patient representatives were included in the working group. To ensure that the guidelines are evidence-based, the literature identified from a systematic search was reviewed and critically appraised. In the absence of any clear scientific evidence, recommendations were based on the professional experience and consensus of the working group. The guidelines are thus based on the best available evidence and expert agreement. Prior to publication, the guidelines were reviewed by 46 independent international reviewers. A total of 272 comments were received and incorporated where relevant. MAIN RESULTS AND THE ROLE OF CHANCE: The multidisciplinary working group formulated 42 recommendations in three sections; diagnosis and diagnostic tests, laboratory tests and interventions, and clinical management. LIMITATIONS, REASONS FOR CAUTION: Of the 42 recommendations, none could be based on high-quality evidence and only four could be based on moderate-quality evidence, implicating that 95% of the recommendations are supported only by low-quality randomized controlled trials, observational data, professional experience, or consensus of the development group. WIDER IMPLICATIONS OF THE FINDINGS: These guidelines offer valuable direction for healthcare professionals who are responsible for the care of patients undergoing ART treatment for infertility. Their purpose is to promote safe and effective ART treatment, enabling patients to make informed decisions based on realistic expectations. The guidelines aim to ensure that patients are fully informed about the various treatment options available to them and the likelihood of any additional treatment or test to improve the chance of achieving a live birth.     Studying the Effect and Treatment of Misspelled Queries in Cross-Language Information Retrieval

    [Abstract] The performance of Information Retrieval systems is limited by the linguistic variation present in natural language texts. Word-level Natural Language Processing techniques have been shown to be useful in reducing this variation. In this article, we summarize our work on the extension of these techniques for dealing with phrase-level variation in European languages, taking Spanish as a case in point. We propose the use of syntactic dependencies as complex index terms in an attempt to solve the problems deriving from both syntactic and morpho-syntactic variation and, in this way, to obtain more precise index terms. Such dependencies are obtained through a shallow parser based on cascades of finite-state transducers in order to reduce as far as possible the overhead due to this parsing process. The use of different sources of syntactic information, queries or documents, has been also studied, as has the restriction of the dependencies applied to those obtained from noun phrases. Our approaches have been tested using the CLEF corpus, obtaining consistent improvements with regard to classical word-level non-linguistic techniques. Results show, on the one hand, that syntactic information extracted from documents is more useful than that from queries.
