    π Junction to probe antiphase s-Wave pairing in iron pnictide superconductors

    Josephson junctions between a FeAs-based superconductor with antiphase s-wave pairing and a conventional s-wave superconductor are studied. The translational invariance in a planar junction between a single crystal pnictide and an aluminum metal greatly enhances the relative weight of electron pockets in the pnictide to the critical current. In a wide doping region of the pnictide, a planar and a point contact junction have opposite phases, which can be used to design a trijunction ring with π phase to probe the antiphase pairing. © 2009 The American Physical Society.published_or_final_versio

    Extract of Zanthoxylum bungeanum maxim seed oil reduces hyperlipidemia in hamsters fed high-fat diet via activation of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ

    Purpose: To investigate the anti-hyperlipidaemic effect of extract of Zanthoxylum bungeanum Maxim. seed oil (EZSO) on high-fat diet (HFD)-induced hyperlipidemic hamsters.Methods: Following feeding with HFD for 30 days, hyperlipidemic hamsters were intragastrically treated with EZSO for 60 days. Serum levels of triglyceride (TG), total cholesterol (TC), low-density-lipoproteincholesterol (LDL-C), nitric oxide (NO) and malondialdehyde (MDA) were analyzed. Protein expression and location of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ (PPARγ) in liver were determined by Western blot and immunohistochemical assays, respectively.Results: EZSO at 5 and 10 g/kg significantly reduced levels of TG by 26 and 23 % (p < 0.05), TC by 19 % (p < 0.01) and 13 % (p < 0.01), LDL-C by 18 % (p < 0.05) and 21 % (p < 0.01), NO by 15 % (p < 0.01) and 31 % (p < 0.01), and MDA by 16 % (p < 0.05) and 30 % (p < 0.01), respectively, in serum of hyperlipidemic hamsters. However, EZSO did not show significant effect on HDL-C level in serum. Furthermore, EZSO at 5 and 10 g/kg markedly promoted protein expression of PPARγ by 71 % (p < 0.05) and 102 % (p < 0.01) in liver tissue of hyperlipidemic hamsters. EZSO also notably increased the content of PPARγ protein in the nucleus of liver cells of hyperlipidemic hamsters.Conclusion: These findings suggest that EZSO can reduce hyperlipidemia and improve oxidative stress in hyperlipidemic hamsters through activation of PPARγ, and that EZSO is a promising novel hypolipidemic health product.Keywords: Zanthoxylum bungeanum, Peroxisome proliferator activated receptor γ, Hyperlipidemia, Hamster, High-fat die

    Numerical modeling of the propagation environment in the atmospheric boundary layer over the Persian Gulf

    Strong vertical gradients at the top of the atmospheric boundary layer affect the propagation of electromagnetic waves and can produce radar ducts. A three-dimensional, time-dependent, nonhydrostatic numerical model was used to simulate the propagation environment in the atmosphere over the Persian Gulf when aircraft observations of ducting had been made. A division of the observations into high- and low-wind cases was used as a framework for the simulations. Three sets of simulations were conducted with initial conditions of varying degrees of idealization and were compared with the observations taken in the Ship Antisubmarine Warfare Readiness/Effectiveness Measuring (SHAREM-115) program. The best results occurred with the initialization based on a sounding taken over the coast modified by the inclusion of data on low-level atmospheric conditions over the Gulf waters. The development of moist, cool, stable marine internal boundary layers (MIBL) in air flowing from land over the waters of the Gulf was simulated. The MIBLs were capped by temperature inversions and associated lapses of humidity and refractivity. The low-wind MIBL was shallower and the gradients at its top were sharper than in the high-wind case, in agreement with the observations. Because it is also forced by land–sea contrasts, a sea-breeze circulation frequently occurs in association with the MIBL. The size, location, and internal structure of the sea-breeze circulation were realistically simulated. The gradients of temperature and humidity that bound the MIBL cause perturbations in the refractivity distribution that, in turn, lead to trapping layers and ducts. The existence, location, and surface character of the ducts were well captured. Horizontal variations in duct characteristics due to the sea-breeze circulation were also evident. The simulations successfully distinguished between high- and low-wind occasions, a notable feature of the SHAREM-115 observations. The modeled magnitudes of duct depth and strength, although leaving scope for improvement, were most encouraging

    Some inherent limitations exist in current Layered Manufacturing (LM) technologies (e.g. little choice of material, small part size and poor surface quality) and traditional NC machining (e.g. the confinement of tool accessibility to internal features). In order to overcome these limitations, a rapid manufacturing method called Robot based Layered Manufacturing (RoLM in brief) is developed. A robot with a milling cutter mounted on the end-effector is used to build a part layer by layer. Given a part model, the determination of build orientation is the first step in the manufacturing cycle and has large effects on the surface quality and build time. In this paper, a set of criteria is proposed to rank the build orientations for RoLM by considering mainly part accuracy and build time.     Genotyping isolates of the entomopathogenic fungus Beauveria bassiana sensu lato by multi-locus polymerase chain reaction-denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (PCR-DGGE) analysis

    Multi-locus denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) analysis was developed to investigate the genotypes of Beauveria bassiana sensu lato. Sensitive tests indicated all isolates with one or more nucleotide differences at EF-1 and Bloc could be distinguished by DGGE except for one pair of strains that differed at four nucleotide positions. Ten, twelve and five genotypes were identified at the EF-1, Bloc and ITS locus, respectively, among seventeen isolates, which together differentiated 13 genotypes. These results demonstrated that multi-locus DGGE is a potentially useful molecular marker for genotyping, identifying and tracking the fates of experimentally released strains of B. bassiana sensu lato. Moreover, by multi-locus DGGE for scanning B. bassiana sensu lato isolates with different multilocus sequences, genetic diversity of B. bassiana sensu lato was effectively investigated with substantially reduced time and cost in subsequent DNA sequencing

    Comparative study of intestine length, weight and digestibility on different body weight chickens

    This experiment was conducted to compare the difference of digestibility on different body weight chickens. Twenty-seven (27) 58-week-old New Yangzhou Chickens of three grade sizes (small 2.0 kg, medium 2.5 kg, and large 3.0 kg) were selected and distributed into three groups (Groups 1 to 3) of nine birds/group, and each group was represented by three replicates. Nutrient retention ratio was determined by adopting whole gather excretion method. In the end of metabolism experiment, all the birds were killed, and the intestine length and intestine weight were measured. Results show that, the amount of feed intake and excretion increased along with body weight gain; the feed intake and excretion in group 3 were significantly higher than that in group 1 (P < 0.05). The sidelong lengths in the three groups were evidently different. Although, the intestinal length as well as the length of the jejunum, ileum and rectum appeared to be gradually improved with the body weight increase, there were no significant differences among the three groups (P > 0.05). The weightier the intestines, the more was body weight of the birds. The retention ratio of energy, crude fiber and neutral detergent fiber increased with body weight gain, but the differences were not significant (P > 0.05).     Tuning the vertical location of helical surface states in topological insulator heterostructures via dual-proximity effects

    In integrating topological insulators (TIs) with conventional materials, one crucial issue is how the topological surface states (TSS) will behave in such heterostructures. We use first-principles approaches to establish accurate tunability of the vertical location of the TSS via intriguing dual-proximity effects. By depositing a conventional insulator (CI) overlayer onto a TI substrate (Bi2Se3 or Bi2Te3), we demonstrate that, the TSS can float to the top of the CI film, or stay put at the CI/TI interface, or be pushed down deeper into the otherwise structurally homogeneous TI substrate. These contrasting behaviors imply a rich variety of possible quantum phase transitions in the hybrid systems, dictated by key material-specific properties of the CI. These discoveries lay the foundation for accurate manipulation of the real space properties of TSS in TI heterostructures of diverse technological significance

    Topological modes bound to dislocations in mechanical metamaterials

    Mechanical metamaterials are artificial structures with unusual properties, such as negative Poisson ratio, bistability or tunable vibrational properties, that originate in the geometry of their unit cell. At the heart of such unusual behaviour is often a soft mode: a motion that does not significantly stretch or compress the links between constituent elements. When activated by motors or external fields, soft modes become the building blocks of robots and smart materials. Here, we demonstrate the existence of topological soft modes that can be positioned at desired locations in a metamaterial while being robust against a wide range of structural deformations or changes in material parameters. These protected modes, localized at dislocations, are the mechanical analogue of topological states bound to defects in electronic systems. We create physical realizations of the topological modes in prototypes of kagome lattices built out of rigid triangular plates. We show mathematically that they originate from the interplay between two Berry phases: the Burgers vector of the dislocation and the topological polarization of the lattice.
