Very large stochastic resonance gains in finite sets of interacting identical subsystems driven by subthreshold rectangular pulses

We study the phenomenon of nonlinear stochastic resonance (SR) in a complex noisy system formed by a finite number of interacting subunits driven by rectangular pulsed time periodic forces. We find that very large SR gains are obtained for subthreshold driving forces with frequencies much larger than the values observed in simpler one-dimensional systems. From Stochastic Optics to the Wigner Formalism: The Role of the Vacuum Field in Optical Quantum Communication Experiments

The Wigner formalism in the Heisenberg picture constitutes a bridge that connects Quantum Optics to Stochastic Optics. The vacuum field appears explicitly in the formalism, and the wavelike aspects of light are emphasised. In addition, the zeropoint intensity as a threshold for detection is a common denominator in both theories. In this paper, after summarising the basic rules of the Wigner approach and its application to parametric down-conversion, some new results are presented that delve into the physical meaning of the zeropoint field in optical quantum communication. Specifically, the relationship between Bell-state distinguishability and the number of sets of zeropoint modes that take part in the experiment is analysed in terms of the coupling between the phases of the different fields involved and the subtraction of the zeropoint intensity at the detectors. Additionally, the connection between the compatibility theorem in quantum cryptography and zeropoint field is stressed

The evolution of Local Labour Market Areas in contrasting region

In many European local labour markets, a growing minority of workers are making longer commuting trips. One consequence for research into journey-to-work flows, which usually seeks to identify the boundaries of local labour market areas (LLMAs), is that these boundaries represent a ¡¥snap shot¡¦ of an increasingly volatile pattern. The challenge for regional science is how best to represent the way LLMAs evolve. «Is it sufficient to simply update maps, using a consistent method which is applied to successive ¡¥snap-shot¡¦ datasets? This approach will be illustrated in contrasting regions. «Is it possible to produce new approaches to analysis which can better draw attention to those areas where change has been rather more, or less, strong? The paper will end with some explorations in pursuit of this aim.

Consecuencias de la quinta ampliación de la Unión Europea

La compleja y costosa quinta ampliación de la Unión Europea no plantea actualmente dudas sobre su calendario, pero sí en cuanto a la financiación y a los periodos transitorios para el acceso definitivo a los fondos estructurales y a la política agraria comunitaria de los países candidatos. Por otra parte, la continuación en la profundización en la integración europea se hará posible a través de la cooperación reforzada. Reflexiones sobre la cerámica tipo Carambolo: ¿un axioma de la arqueología protohistórica del suroeste andaluz?

En primer, lugar planteamos una reflexión sobre este peculiar tipo cerámico, pero no acerca de cuestiones meramente formales, sino en torno a una serie de matices coyunturales que rodearon el momento de la aparición de la cerámica tipo Carambolo en el panorama científico y que, a nuestro entender, influyeron en la posterior interpretación que de ella se hizo. Por otro lado, a la luz de los nuevos descubrimientos y de las nuevas hipótesis de trabajo sugeridas en los últimos años, y dejando a un lado cierta herencia historiográfica, quizá sea posible abrir otras líneas de interpretación que ayuden a aclarar la incertidumbre que rodea a esta vajilla, así como otros aspectos oscuros del tránsito del Bronce Final al Hierro I

La evaluación de competencias en la web

En el actual marco del Espacio Europeo de Educación Superior (EEES) la mejora de la calidad de la enseñanza y el aprendizaje es una cuestión clave, en ella, la evaluación de competencias se convierte en una cuestión central. La máxima accesibilidad a cualquier tipo de información o herramienta está hoy en Internet, y ese medio es también muy adecuado para la evaluación, especialmente en el contexto universitario. Por ello el objetivo de este trabajo es realizar una revisión de portales web dedicados a evaluación de competencias genéricas, haciendo hincapié en aquellos que ofrezcan herramientas de evaluación disponibles online. Se ha realizado una búsqueda en Google a partir de palabras clave en inglés y en español, y se han consultado las páginas de las primeras universidades según el ranking Webometrics. Los resultados obtenidos permiten afirmar una tendencia a la constitución de plataformas colaborativas procedentes de iniciativas en las que participan amplias redes de profesores universitarios y diversas instituciones, que ofrecen herramientas con aplicación práctica y de acceso abierto

Avenços en la investigació dels olis d'oliva de la varietat arbequina

Es presenten els resultats experimentals, sobre l'oli d'oliva de la varietat arbequina. Denominació d'Origen Protegida Les Garrigues, de l'aplicació de diferents nivells de reg en dues campanyes successives i de l'efecte de les condicions climàtiques al llarg de vuit campanyes. El contingut en polifenols i de pigments són els paràmetres més afectats, mentre que la resta dels que configuren la qualitat es mantenen constants als canvis hídrics i climàtics.This work presents the experimental results, on the olive oil of the arbequina variety in the Garrigues region, of the different irrigation conditions in two successive campaigns and the influence of climatic conditions in eight campaigns. The polyphenol and pigment content are the most influenced parameters, and the other quality characteristics are independents of the hydric and climatic conditions
