A communicational model characterized by the fusion of interpersonal communication and mass communication, connecting audiences and broadcasters under a hypertextual matrix linking several media devices. The Networked Communication model is the informational societies communication model. A model that must be understood also in its needed literacies for building our media diets, media matrixes and on how it’s changing the way autonomy is managed and citizenship exercised in the Information Age. In this book Gustavo Cardoso develops an analysis that, focusing on the last decade, takes us from Europe to North America and from South America to Asia, combining under the framework of the Network Society a broad range of scientific perspectives from Media Studies to Political Science and Social Movements theory to Sociology of Communication.Index of Figures Index of Tables Preface Acknowledgements The Media in the Network Society. Telecommunications for the Needy: How needed are they?

    Get PDF
Telecommunications, mobile and non-mobile, play a major role in our society, but their role as tools for escaping poverty remains a policy agenda still with room for progress both in Europe and around the World. Some groups in society, like the needy, have difficulties in accessing and using such technologies in ways that mirror the debates of the late 90s over the "digital divide". For some groups, like the needy, it would be more exact to address the concept of digital poverty rather than digital divide, because without access to telecommunications one might not have the same degree of opportunities to leave poverty or not to fall into poverty [34] [3] [4]. The goal of this paper is to scope the problem by departing from the Portuguese case study. Our research is empirical and highlights the telecommunication ownership and expenditures of the Portuguese population, and specially the most fragile segments within it. Such an effort is undertaken while not ignoring major issues of political economy of the contemporary globalizing networked society. Our main argument in this paper is that, if telecommunications are a needed tool for the lower income segments of the population, that is the needy, a debate around digital poverty associated to mobile telecommunications is needed in Europe too and to address such issues we need public policy commitments.needy, mobile telecommunications, digital poverty, digital divide, telecommunication policies

Digital reading: the transformation of reading practices

    Get PDF
The paper aims to present the preliminary results of a two-year project having as scope the future of the book and libraries stemming from the current reading practices in Portugal. In the scope of the project, the presentation of the findings will be focused on the mobile consumption practices in Portugal. This research is based on a mixed methodology: a quantitative survey – Network Society in Portugal – articulated with a qualitative analysis of the discourses of the representatives of what Thompson calls the publishing chain (librarians, publishing houses, authors, and content and soft/hardware providers). To understand the impact of mobile devices on reading practices is crucial for libraries and publishing houses. Mobile devices offer augmented mobility – a mobility that is connected, networked and collaborative. Although the hype is currently around eBooks, we are still faced with a market where the vast majority still reads books on paper. The sales of devices have exploded but eBooks are lagging behind. What do people use their tablets, iPads, and eReaders for? What are they reading and where? How do they articulate their readings with other media and cultural consumptions? Those are the central questions that we are aiming at answering.N/

WhatsApp and audio misinformation during the Covid-19 pandemic

Given user choices and the commercial offerings of internet providers, WhatsApp has increasingly become established as a new standard for communication by audio, image, and text. This paper explores the role of misinformation during the Covid-19 pandemic by using content disseminated through WhatsApp, thereby making three main contributions: a discussion about the potential shift toward nontextual and nonvisual forms of misinformation; the new social role of audio, namely related to the critique of policies and political actors during the early stage of the Covid-19 pandemic; and the questioning of the First Draft News disinformation conceptual model by proposing a complementary approach that focuses only on factuality. Conclusions were drawn after conducting a content analysis of 988 units of Covid-19-related audio files, images, videos, and texts shared via WhatsApp during the early stage of the pandemic. A typology was identified to address distinct claims that focus on five different topics (society, policy and politics, health science, pandemic, and other), as well as audio messaging trending as a novel format for spreading misinformation. The results help us to contextualize and discuss a potential shift toward nontextual and nonvisual forms of misinformation, reflecting the increasing adoption of the audio format among WhatsApp users and making WhatsApp a fertile environment for the circulation and dissemination of misinformation regarding Covid-19-related themes. In a society characterized by the rapid consumption of information, the idea that content must have a degree of falsehood to mislead is an indicator of the distance between theoretical models and social reality. This indicator is important to identify true content as potential misinformation on the basis of its factuality

On the distribution of an effective channel estimator for multi-cell massive MIMO

Accurate channel estimation is of utmost importance for massive MIMO systems to provide significant improvements in spectral and energy efficiency. In this work, we present a study on the distribution of a simple but yet effective and practical channel estimator for multi-cell massive MIMO systems suffering from pilot-contamination. The proposed channel estimator performs well under moderate to aggressive pilot contamination scenarios without previous knowledge of the inter-cell large-scale channel coefficients and noise power, asymptotically approximating the performance of the linear MMSE estimator as the number of antennas increases. We prove that the distribution of the proposed channel estimator can be accurately approximated by the circularly-symmetric complex normal distribution, when the number of antennas, M, deployed at the base station is greater than 10

Introduction: Determination of renal function is particularly important when prescribing antibiotics to elderly patients. This study aims to determine the correlation between estimated creatinine clearance and the estimated glomerular filtration rate, for a hospitalized population of very elderly patients, and to audit antibiotic prescribing errors. Material and methods: Retrospective cohort study of all patients ≥ 80 years hospitalized with antibiotic. Creatinine clearance was calculated using Cockcroft-Gault equation and estimated glomerular filtration rate by Modification of Diet in Renal Disease Study and Chronic Kidney Disease Epidemiology Collaboration equations. Dosing errors were determined through adjustment of daily define dose to renal function. Results: The study included 589 patients. The correlation of Cockcroft-Gault with Modification of Diet in Renal Disease and Chronic Kidney Disease Epidemiology Collaboration was r = 0.98 and 0.96 for the minimum serum creatinine, and 0.97 and 0.93 for the maximum serum creatinine. Based on Cockcroft-Gault, there were errors in the daily defined dose in 45% in the minimum serum creatinine, and 52% in the maximum serum creatinine day. There was a discrepancy in the recording of errors of 14% to 16% when Cockcroft-Gault was compared with Modification of Diet in Renal Disease and Chronic Kidney Disease Epidemiology Collaboration. Discussion: There was a good correlation of Cockcroft-Gault with the estimated glomerular filtration rate by Modification of Diet in Renal Disease or Chronic Kidney Disease Epidemiology Collaboration. Regardless of the equation used to estimate renal function there was a high rate of antibiotic dosing errors documented in this population. Conclusion: This study supports the maintenance of the Cockcroft-Gault equation for drug dosing in the very elderly population. Further studies are needed to investigate underlying causes of prescribing errors.

The objective of this work is to evaluate the thermohydraulic performance of finned tube condensers. In order to accomplish this objective, a test bench was built and a computational code was developed. The test bench has two circuits: one for air flow and another for refrigerant flow. The condenser heat released rate can be measured in both circuits. In the air circuit, the air flow is measured by nozzles and the temperature difference by differential thermocouples. In the refrigerant circuit, the mass flow rate is measured by a Coriolis type mass flow meter and the enthalpy differential is calculated from the absolute temperature and pressure measurements. The j and the f dimensionless parameters are calculated from the experimental data. The effect of fin geometry, fin pitch, louver, and fin edge corrugation were all explored experimentally. Comparisons with correlations available in the open literature are presented and discussed. The computational code can be used either to calculate the j and the f parameters from heat transfer and air pressure drop data, or to simulate the heat transfer and the air pressure drop from j and f empirical correlations. The developed computational code was coupled to the MODEFRONTIER# optimization software in an attempt to optimize the fin pitch for a specific condenser

A liderança é uma ferramenta imprescindível no mercado atual, pois liderar significa inspirar confiança e apoiar as pessoas cuja competência e compromisso dependem do desempenho.
