    Changes in epidemiological patterns of sea lice infestation on farmed Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L., in Scotland between 1996 and 2006

    Analyses of a unique database containing sea lice records over an 11 year period provide evidence of changing infestation patterns in Scotland. The data, collected from more than 50 commercial Atlantic salmon farms, indicate that both species of sea lice commonly found in Scotland, Lepeophtheirus salmonis and Caligus elongatus, have declined on farms over the past decade. Reductions for both species have been particularly marked since 2001 when more effective veterinary medicines became available. Treatment data were also available in the database and these show a growing trend towards the use of the in feed medication emamectin benzoate (Slice), particularly in the first year of the salmon production cycle. However, this trend to wards single product use has not been sustained in 2006, the latest year for which data are available. There is some evidence of region to region variation within Scotland with the Western Isles experiencing higher levels of infestation. However, compared to the levels observed between 1996 and 2000, all regions have benefited from reduced lice infestation, with the overall pattern showing a particular reduction in the second and third quarters of the second year of production

    Evaluation of residue management practices on barley residue decomposition

    Optimizing barley (hordeum vulgare L.) production in Idaho and other parts of the Pacific Northwest (PNW) should focus on farm resource management. The effect of post-harvest residue management on barley residue decomposition has not been adequately studied. Thus, the objective of this study was to determine the effect of residue placement (surface vs. incorporated), residue size (chopped vs. ground-sieved) and soil type (sand and sandy loam) on barley residue decomposition. A 3-mo laboratory incubation experiment was conducted at a temperature of 25 to 30 °C at the Aberdeen Research and Extension Center, Aberdeen, Idaho, USA. Following the study, a Markov-Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) modeling approach was applied to investigate the first-order decay kinetics of barley residue. An accelerated initial flush of C-mineralization was measured for the sieved (Day 1) compared to chopped (Day 3 to 5) residues for both surface incorporated applications. The highest evolution of CO2-C of 8.3 g kg-1 was observed on Day 1 from the incorporated-sieved application for both soils. The highest and lowest amount of cumulative CO2-C released and percentage residue decomposed over 50-d was observed for surface-chopped (107 g kg-1 and 27%, respectively) and incorporated-sieved (69 g kg-1 and 18%, respectively) residues, respectively. There were no significant differences in C-mineralization from barley residue based on soil type or its interactions (p >0.05). The largest decay constant k of 0.0083 d-1 was calculated for surface-chopped residue where the predicted half-life was 80 d, which did not differ from surface sieved or incorporated chopped. In contrast, incorporated-sieved treatments only resulted in a k of 0.0054 d-1 and would need an additional 48 d to decompose 50% of the residue. Future residue decomposition studies under field conditions are warranted to verify the residue C-mineralization and its impact on residue management

    Ratios of BB and DD Meson Decay Constants in Relativistic Quark Model

    We calculate the ratios of BB and DD meson decay constants by applying the variational method to the relativistic hamiltonian of the heavy meson. We adopt the Gaussian and hydrogen-type trial wave functions, and use six different potentials of the potential model. We obtain reliable results for the ratios, which are similar for different trial wave functions and different potentials. The obtained ratios show the deviation from the nonrelativistic scaling law, and they are in a pretty good agreement with the results of the Lattice calculations.Comment: 13 pages, 1 Postscript figur

    Minisuperspace Quantization of "Bubbling AdS" and Free Fermion Droplets

    We quantize the space of 1/2 BPS configurations of Type IIB SUGRA found by Lin, Lunin and Maldacena (hep-th/0409174), directly in supergravity. We use the Crnkovic-Witten-Zuckerman covariant quantization method to write down the expression for the symplectic structure on this entire space of solutions. We find the symplectic form explicitly around AdS_5 x S^5 and obtain a U(1) Kac-Moody algebra, in precise agreement with the quantization of a system of N free fermions in a harmonic oscillator potential, as expected from AdS/CFT. As a cross check, we also perform the quantization around AdS_5 x S^5 by another method, using the known spectrum of physical perturbations around this background and find precise agreement with our previous calculation.Comment: 22 Pages + 2 Appendices, JHEP3; v3: explanation of factor 2 mismatch added, references reordered, published versio

    Dynamic scaling and quasi-ordered states in the two dimensional Swift-Hohenberg equation

    The process of pattern formation in the two dimensional Swift-Hohenberg equation is examined through numerical and analytic methods. Dynamic scaling relationships are developed for the collective ordering of convective rolls in the limit of infinite aspect ratio. The stationary solutions are shown to be strongly influenced by the strength of noise. Stationary states for small and large noise strengths appear to be quasi-ordered and disordered respectively. The dynamics of ordering from an initially inhomogeneous state is very slow in the former case and fast in the latter. Both numerical and analytic calculations indicate that the slow dynamics can be characterized by a simple scaling relationship, with a characteristic dynamic exponent of 1/41/4 in the intermediate time regime

    On the warp drive space-time

    In this paper the problem of the quantum stability of the two-dimensional warp drive spacetime moving with an apparent faster than light velocity is considered. We regard as a maximum extension beyond the event horizon of that spacetime its embedding in a three-dimensional Minkowskian space with the topology of the corresponding Misner space. It is obtained that the interior of the spaceship bubble becomes then a multiply connected nonchronal region with closed timelike curves and that the most natural vacuum allows quantum fluctuations which do not induce any divergent behaviour of the re-normalized stress-energy tensor, even on the event (Cauchy) chronology horizon. In such a case, the horizon encloses closed timelike curves only at scales close to the Planck length, so that the warp drive satisfies the Ford's negative energy-time inequality. Also found is a connection between the superluminal two-dimensional warp drive space and two-dimensional gravitational kinks.     Relativistic nuclear recoil corrections to the energy levels of hydrogen-like and high ZZ lithium like atoms in all orders in αZ\alpha Z

    The relativistic nuclear recoil corrections to the energy levels of low-laying states of hydrogen-like and high ZZ lithium-like atoms in all orders in αZ\alpha Z are calculated. The calculations are carried out using the B-spline method for the Dirac equation. For low ZZ the results of the calculation are in good agreement with the αZ\alpha Z -expansion results. It is found that the nuclear recoil contribution, additional to the Salpeter's one, to the Lamb shift (n=2n=2) of hydrogen is 1.32(6)kHz-1.32(6)\,kHz. The total nuclear recoil correction to the energy of the (1s)22p12(1s)22s(1s)^{2}2p_{\frac{1}{2}}-(1s)^{2}2s transition in lithium-like uranium constitutes 0.07eV-0.07\,eV and is largely made up of QED contributions.Comment: 19 pages, latex, accepted for publication in Phys.     ERS statement on standardisation of cardiopulmonary exercise testing in chronic lung diseases

    The objective of this document was to standardise published cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET) protocols for improved interpretation in clinical settings and multicentre research projects. This document: 1) summarises the protocols and procedures used in published studies focusing on incremental CPET in chronic lung conditions; 2) presents standard incremental protocols for CPET on a stationary cycle ergometer and a treadmill; and 3) provides patients’ perspectives on CPET obtained through an online survey supported by the European Lung Foundation. We systematically reviewed published studies obtained from EMBASE, Medline, Scopus, Web of Science and the Cochrane Library from inception to January 2017. Of 7914 identified studies, 595 studies with 26 523 subjects were included. The literature supports a test protocol with a resting phase lasting at least 3 min, a 3-min unloaded phase, and an 8- to 12-min incremental phase with work rate increased linearly at least every minute, followed by a recovery phase of at least 2–3 min. Patients responding to the survey (n=295) perceived CPET as highly beneficial for their diagnostic assessment and informed the Task Force consensus. Future research should focus on the individualised estimation of optimal work rate increments across different lung diseases, and the collection of robust normative data.The document facilitates standardisation of conducting, reporting and interpreting cardiopulmonary exercise tests in chronic lung diseases for comparison of reference data, multi-centre studies and assessment of interventional efficacy. http://bit.ly/31SXeB

    The influence of probiotic supplementation on selected athletic performance-related blood markers in men

    It has been speculated that probiotics can improve athletic performance. Significant increases in haemoglobin concentration and oxygen consumption have also been shown to follow the ingestion of lactic acid bacteria in athletes. The aim of this study was to determine whether the administration of commercially prepared probiotics could influence haemoglobin concentration and other haematological parameters in moderately active males. Fifty healthy, moderately active male volunteers were divided into two groups (Test Group and Control Group). A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, pre-test/post-test, group comparison study was done. The study showed no significant differences (p≥0.05) between the two groups on any of the dependent measurements. There were statistically significant changes (p≤0.05) between pre- and post-test results within the two groups. These changes were within physiological limits. Sodium increased significantly (p=0,001) from 139.29 mmol/L to 140.96 mmol/L in the Control Group. In the Test Group sodium increased significantly (p=0,035) from 139.60 mmol/L to 140.90 mmol/L, and potassium decreased (p=0.010) from 4.67 mmol/L to 4.44 mmol/L. Study results thus indicated that the ingestion of a lactic acid bacteria preparation for 42 days did not increase the haemoglobin concentration in moderately active males.http://www.ajol.info/journal_index.php?jid=153&ab=ajpher
