    Evaluation of synthetic substituted 1,2-dioxanes as novel agents against human leishmaniasis

    The treatment of human leishmaniasis is currently based on few compounds that are highly toxic, expensive and have a high rate of treatment failure. A number of recent studies on new drugs focuses on natural or semi-synthetic compounds. Among them, the endoperoxide artemisinin, extracted from Artemisia annua, and some of its derivatives have shown leishmanicidal activity. In the present work, a series of structurally simple, fully synthetic 1,2-dioxanes were evaluated for in vitro antileishmanial activity against promastigotes of Leishmania donovani; the cytotoxicity for mammalian cells was also assessed. The six most promising compounds in terms of activity and selectivity were further investigated for their antileishmanial activity on the promastigote forms of L. tropica, L. major and L. infantum and against L. donovani amastigotes. The good performance in terms of potency and selectivity makes these six hits promising candidates for a preliminary lead optimization as antileishmanial agents

    Study of void closure in hot rolling of stainless steel slabs

    Continuous casting products contain void defects due to the shrinkage occurring during solidification. These defects, having different and irregular shapes and sizes, are located and distributed within the material depending on casting conditions. In order to deliver safe and sound products, these voids must be reduced during the subsequent hot forming processes, but it becomes very difficult when slabs are directly hot rolled without any previous forming processes (i.e., cogging), so obtaining a cheaper and more sustainable process chain. Many studies on voids closure present in literature are based on the evaluation of a process parameter called "stress triaxiality ratio". Aim of this research is to optimize the hot rolling process performed to reduce shrinkage voids of the billet due to casting. In particular, the results of a study on voids closure during hot rolling of stainless steel slabs (AISI 316L) coming from continuous casting process are reported. A FE analysis of the effects of the main process parameters of hot rolling on the "voids closure index" were investigated. Afterwards, experimental tests were performed to validate the research from an industrial point of view. A correlation between the void closure index and the final residual void percentage along the rolled slabs was found

The behaviour of such catalysts is frequently strongly dependent on the molar ratio of the two elements as well as nanoparticle size and the interaction with the support material. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) is an excellent surface analytical technique for probing the electronic properties of catalytic systems. When a mixture of pure and alloyed particles is present, it is more difficult to extract information from XPS given that it is a spatial averaging technique. Recently, the technique of medium energy ion scattering (MEIS) has been exploited to investigate the depth-dependent composition of nanoparticles on planar surfaces. Herein, we combine the two techniques to investigate the nature of Cu and Au nanoparticles deposited onto ultrathin CeO2 films on Si(111) examining their morphology and chemical composition as a function of annealing temperature for samples that have been maintained in an ultrahigh vacuum environment and exposed to air. The Cu/Au/CeO2/Si(111) is chosen as a model system in order to provide insight into how the catalytic properties of Cu/Au/CeO2 depend on the presence of discrete Cu and Au particles versus fully intermixed Cu/Au systems.PostprintPeer reviewe

    New enantiomerically pure 1,2,4-trioxepanes 10a,b/11a,b were synthesized from d-glucose. Their conformational behavior was studied by low-temperature NMR and substantiated by DFT calculations. On evaluation of in vitro antimalarial activity, the adamantyl derivative 11b showed IC50 values in the low micromolar range, particularly against the W2 chloroquine-resistant Plasmodium falciparum strain (IC50 = 0.15 \ub1 0.12 \u3bcM)

    Os solos tropicais são normalmente ácidos, devido a lixiviação de bases e ausência de minerais responsáveis pela reposição dessas bases (VITTI; PROCHNOW, 1996). Além da ocorrência natural, as práticas agrícolas de manejo podem acentuar a acidez do solo, Para Gama (1998) a recomendação correta de calcário tem grande importância, principalmente para que se tenhà uma adequada correção da acidez e aumente a eficiência dos fertilizantes. Isso torna-se mais relevante no caso do fósforo e dos micronutrientes metálicos, pois a acidez do solo exerce grande influência no controle da disponibilidade destes nutrientes. Segundo Lopes (1989) além da acidez, fatores como tipo e quantidade de argila do solo também influenciam a disponibilidade de P no mesmo. De acordo com Abreu et aI. (2001), o cobre tem sua disponibilidade controlada pela reação do solo e por altos teores de matéria orgânica que pode complexa-lo. No caso do manganês baixos teores naturais e o desequilíbrio de outros metais (Ca, Fe, Mg) condicionam a sua disponibilidade no solo (BORKET et al., 2001). Para estes autores a correção da acidez dos solos sob cerrados, com elevação da saturação por bases a 70% contribuiu para o surgimento de deficiências de manganês na cultura da soja, daí a recomendação atual de considerar 50% de saturação por bases como valor mais adequado àquela cultura. Quanto ao comportamento do zinco, Abreu et al.(200 1) relacionam que além da acidez baixa, altos teores de fósforo e matéria orgânica, podem reduzir a sua disponibilidade no solo.     Hepcidin Expression in Iron Overload Diseases Is Variably Modulated by Circulating Factors

    Hepcidin is a regulatory hormone that plays a major role in controlling body iron homeostasis. Circulating factors (holotransferrin, cytokines, erythroid regulators) might variably contribute to hepcidin modulation in different pathological conditions. There are few studies analysing the relationship between hepcidin transcript and related protein expression profiles in humans. Our aims were: a. to measure hepcidin expression at either hepatic, serum and urinary level in three paradigmatic iron overload conditions (hemochromatosis, thalassemia and dysmetabolic iron overload syndrome) and in controls; b. to measure mRNA hepcidin expression in two different hepatic cell lines (HepG2 and Huh-7) exposed to patients and controls sera to assess whether circulating factors could influence hepcidin transcription in different pathological conditions. Our findings suggest that hepcidin assays reflect hepatic hepcidin production, but also indicate that correlation is not ideal, likely due to methodological limits and to several post-trascriptional events. In vitro study showed that THAL sera down-regulated, HFE-HH and C-NAFLD sera up-regulated hepcidin synthesis. HAMP mRNA expression in Huh-7 cells exposed to sera form C-Donors, HFE-HH and THAL reproduced, at lower level, the results observed in HepG2, suggesting the important but not critical role of HFE in hepcidin regulation

    Search for the exotic Ξ(1860)\Xi^{--}(1860) Resonance in 340GeV/c Σ\Sigma^--Nucleus Interactions

    We report on a high statistics search for the Ξ(1860)\Xi^{--}(1860) resonance in Σ\Sigma^--nucleus collisions at 340GeV/c. No evidence for this resonance is found in our data sample which contains 676000 Ξ\Xi^- candidates above background. For the decay channel Ξ(1860)Ξπ\Xi^{--}(1860) \to \Xi^-\pi^- and the kinematic range 0.15<xF<<x_F<0.9 we find a 3σ\sigma upper limit for the production cross section of 3.1 and 3.5 μ\mub per nucleon for reactions with carbon and copper, respectively.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, modification of ref. 43 and 4

    Measurement of the Omega_c Lifetime

    We present the measurement of the lifetime of the Omega_c we have performed using three independent data samples from two different decay modes. Using a Sigma- beam of 340 GeV/c we have obtained clean signals for the Omega_c decaying into Xi- K- pi+ pi+ and Omega- pi+ pi- pi+, avoiding topological cuts normally used in charm analysis. The short but measurable lifetime of the Omega_c is demonstrated by a clear enhancement of the signals at short but finite decay lengths. Using a continuous maximum likelihood method we determined the lifetime to be tau(Omega_c) = 55 +13-11(stat) +18-23(syst) fs. This makes the Omega_c the shortest living weakly decaying particle observed so far. The short value of the lifetime confirms the predicted pattern of the charmed baryon lifetimes and demonstrates that the strong interaction plays a vital role in the lifetimes of charmed hadrons.Comment: 15 pages, including 7 figures; gzipped, uuencoded postscrip
