    Environmental forcing of the Campeche cold-water coral province, southern Gulf of Mexico

    With an extension of >40 km2 the recently discovered Campeche cold-water coral province located at the northeastern rim of the Campeche Bank in the southern Gulf of Mexico belongs to the largest coherent cold-water coral areas discovered so far. The Campeche province consists of numerous 20 to 40 m high coral ridges that are developed in intermediate water depths of 500 to 600 m. The ridges are colonized by a vivid cold-water coral ecosystem that covers the upper flanks and summits. The rich coral community is dominated by the framework-building scleractinia Enallopsammia profunda and Lophelia pertusa while the associated benthic megafauna shows a rather scarce occurrence. The recent environmental setting is characterized by a high surface water production caused by a local upwelling center and a dynamic bottom water regime comprising vigorous bottom currents, internal waves and strong density contrasts, which all together provide optimal conditions for the growth of cold-water corals. The strong hydrodynamics – potentially supported by the diel vertical migration of zooplankton in the Campeche area – drive the delivering of food particles to the corals. The Campeche cold-water coral province is, thus, an excellent example highlighting the importance of the hydrographic setting in securing the food supply for the development of large and vivid cold-water coral ecosystems

    Imaginar cómo podemos mejorar nuestra calidad de vida a partir de las innovaciones científicas y tecnológicas ha sido uno de los temas principales de diversas instituciones e industrias culturales como la cinematografía y los museos. A diferencia de las palabras modernización o desarrollo, el concepto de progreso denota cambios de más de un tipo y representa una identidad cultural influenciada por el ethos de cada época. El problema de esta investigación radica en el esfuerzo, por parte de diversos organismos y corporaciones de mantener una ideología del progreso al proponer discursivamente sus percepciones del tema y legitimarlos por medio de mensajes científico-tecnológicos expuestos especialmente a través de las industrias culturales, consideradas medios masivos que ayudan a perpetuar discursos dominantes sobre diversos temas. Lo anterior se aborda desde la teoría de comunicación del sociólogo estadounidense John B. Thompson (1997) y la hermenéutica profunda. El caso de estudio se centra en el parque temático EPCOT. Entre los resultados se encuentra que la construcción de la noción del progreso se ve fuertemente influenciada por los intereses comerciales de los patrocinadores. Por otro lado, el futuro se presenta como uno utópico y extremadamente optimista sin cuestionamiento o disrupción alguna, esta percepción permeó el desarrollo de Estados Unidos durante el siglo XX y luchó por permanecer vigente durante el siglo XXI a pesar de las guerras y las crisis

    The Growth and Decay of the Late Weichselian Ice Sheet in Western Svalbard and Adjacent Areas Based on Provenance Studies of Marine Sediments

    The history of the Late Weichselian northwestern Barents Shelf, including western Svalbard, has been investigated by provenance/sedimentologist studies of five cores from the continental shelf and slope west of Svalbard. The chronostratigraphy of the cores is based on AMS 14C dates and oxygen isotope analyses. Interpretations of the cores suggest that the ice sheets of western Svalbard and northwestern Barents Sea experienced advances and retreats in two steps. The first significant ice advance beyond the present coastline occurred ca. 22,000 14C yr B.P. and was followed by an ice advance to the shelf edge ca. 18,000 14C yr B.P. Ice recession from the outer shelf and the southwestern Barents Sea began 14,800 14C yr B.P. and was followed by a second ice recession between 13,000 and 12,000 14 C yr B.P. during which ice withdrew from the inner shelf. A minor readvance of the ice sheet on the shelf west of Svalbard occurred close to 12,400 14C yr B.P. The first deglaciation event was associated with release of icebergs containing ice-rafted detritus, while the later episode also included significant amounts of meltwater and fine-grained sediment

    Multidecadal ocean variability and NW European ice sheet surges during the last deglaciation

    A multiproxy paleoceanographic record from the Atlantic margin off the British Isles reveals in unprecedented detail discharges of icebergs and meltwater in response to sea surface temperature increases across the last deglaciation. We observe the earliest signal of deglaciation as a moderate elevation of sea surface temperatures that commenced with a weakly developed thermocline and the presence of highly ventilated intermediate waters in the Rockall Trough. This warming pulse triggered a series of multidecadal ice-rafted debris peaks that culminated with a major meltwater discharge at 17,500 years before present related to ice sheet disintegration across the NW European region. The impact of meltwater caused a progressive reduction in deep water ventilation and a sea surface cooling phase that preceded the collapse of the Laurentide Ice Sheet during Heinrich event 1 by 500-1000 years. A similar sequence of rapid ocean-ice sheet interaction across the European continental margin is identified during the Bølling-Allerød to Younger Dryas transition. The strategic location of our sediment core suggests a sensitive and rapid response of ice sheets in NW Europe to transient increases in thermohaline heat transport

    Identification of the Transcriptional Regulator NcrB in the Nickel Resistance Determinant of Leptospirillum ferriphilum UBK03

    The nickel resistance determinant ncrABCY was identified in Leptospirillum ferriphilum UBK03. Within this operon, ncrA and ncrC encode two membrane proteins that form an efflux system, and ncrB encodes NcrB, which belongs to an uncharacterized family (DUF156) of proteins. How this determinant is regulated remains unknown. Our data indicate that expression of the nickel resistance determinant is induced by nickel. The promoter of ncrA, designated pncrA, was cloned into the promoter probe vector pPR9TT, and co-transformed with either a wild-type or mutant nickel resistance determinant. The results revealed that ncrB encoded a transcriptional regulator that could regulate the expression of ncrA, ncrB, and ncrC. A GC-rich inverted repeat sequence was identified in the promoter pncrA. Electrophoretic mobility shift assays (EMSAs) and footprinting assays showed that purified NcrB could specifically bind to the inverted repeat sequence of pncrA in vitro; this was confirmed by bacterial one-hybrid analysis. Moreover, this binding was inhibited in the presence of nickel ions. Thus, we classified NcrB as a transcriptional regulator that recognizes the inverted repeat sequence binding motif to regulate the expression of the key nickel resistance gene, ncrA

    A "critical" climatic evaluation of last interglacial (MIS 5e) records from the Norwegian Sea

    Sediment cores from the Norwegian Sea were studied to evaluate interglacial climate conditions of the marine isotope stage 5e (MIS 5e). Using planktic forminiferal assemblages as the core method, a detailed picture of the evolution of surface water conditions was derived. According to our age model, a step-like deglaciation of the Saalian ice sheets is noted between ca. 135 and 124.5 Kya, but the deglaciation shows little response with regard to surface ocean warming. From then on, the rapidly increasing abundance of subpolar forminifers, concomitant with decreasing iceberg indicators, provides evidence for the development of interglacial conditions sensu stricto (5e-ss), a period that lasted for about 9 Ky. As interpreted from the foraminiferal records, and supported by the other proxies, this interval of 5e-ss was in two parts: showing an early warm phase, but with a fresher, i.e., lower salinity, water mass, and a subsequent cooling phase that lasted until ca. 118.5 Kya. After this time, the climatic optimum with the most intense advection of Atlantic surface water masses occurred until ca. 116 Kya. A rapid transition with two notable climatic perturbations is observed subsequently during the glacial inception. Overall, the peak warmth of the last interglacial period occurred relatively late after deglaciation, and at no time did it reach the high warmth level of the early Holocene. This finding must be considered when using the last interglacial situation as an analogue model for enhanced meridional transfer of ocean heat to the Arctic, with the prospect of a future warmer climate
