Effects of Increasing Concentrations of Distillers Dried Grains with Solubles (DlDGS) on Growth Performance of Weaning Pigs
The objective of this experiment was to evaluate growth performance of weanling pigs introduced to low concentrations (5%) of DDGS during phase 2 of the nursery period followed by high concentrations (30%) during phase 3 of the nursery period Overall (day 0 to 42), pigs fed 5 or 30% DDGS in phase 2 (and 30% DDGS in phase 3) had decreased (P \u3c 0.05) average daily gain (ADG) compared to control pigs. In addition, pigs fed 30% DDGS (during phase 2 and 3) had decreased (P \u3c 0.05) body weight (BW) compared to control pigs and pigs that only received DDGS during phase 3. However, pigs fed 0% DDGS during phase 2 followed by 30% DDGS in phase 3) had similar BW, ADG and average daily feed intake compared to pigs fed the control diet. This research indicates that the inclusion of DDGS during phase 2 of the nursery may negatively affect growth performance, particularly when followed by inclusion of high concentrations of DDGS during phase 3 of the nursery period. However, growth performance may be maintained when high concentrations of DDGS are included in the diets of pigs (with no previous exposure to DDGS) late in the nursery period
Growth performance of nursery pigs fed BIOSAF yeast, alone or in combination with an in-feed antimicrobial
Swine research, 2005 is known as Swine day, 2005A total of 280 pigs were used in a 28-d growth study to evaluate the effects of feeding the antimicrobial carbadox, BIOSAF (0.4%), and the combination of carbadox and BIOSAF yeast (0.15%) in nursery pig diets. Over the length of the entire trial, pigs fed the diet containing carbadox alone had greater ADG than did pigs fed the control diet or the diet containing 0.4% BIOSAF. Overall, pigs fed the diet containing both carbadox and 0.15% BIOSAF had greater ADG than did pigs fed the control diet or the diet containing 0.4% BIOSAF (P<0.04), although their growth performance did not differ from that of pigs fed carbadox alone. Antibody titers in response to routine vaccination against Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae were not affected by dietary treatment. There was no evidence that BIOSAF improved growth performance of nursery pigs, either alone or in combination with the carbadox. It is possible that the interactive effects of BIOSAF that have been reported for other in-feed antibiotics are not present when
BIOSAF is combined with carbadox, or perhaps
interactive effects are only observed when carbadox itself exerts a more potent stimulation of ADG in nursery pigs
Beta-delayed-neutron studies of Sb and I performed with trapped ions
Beta-delayed-neutron (n) spectroscopy was performed using the
Beta-decay Paul Trap and an array of radiation detectors. The n
branching ratios and energy spectra for Sb and I were
obtained by measuring the time of flight of recoil ions emerging from the
trapped ion cloud. These nuclei are located at the edge of an isotopic region
identified as having n branching ratios that impact the r-process
abundance pattern around the A~130 peak. For Sb and I,
n branching ratios of 14.6(11)%, 17.6(28)%, and 7.6(28)% were
determined, respectively. The n energy spectra obtained for Sb
and I are compared with results from direct neutron measurements, and
the n energy spectrum for Sb has been measured for the first
time
Corn particle size and pelleting influence on growth performance, fecal shedding, and lymph node infection rates of salmonella enterica serovar typhimurium
Ninety-six pigs (initially 13.8 lb.) were used in a 28-d trial to determine the interactive effects between pelleting and particle size on Salmonella serovar Typhimurium shedding and colonization in a young growing pig model. The experiment was a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement consisting of meal or pelleted diets with fine or coarse ground corn. Pigs were fed the diets 1 wk pre-salmonella inoculation and allotted based on weight to one of four dietary treatments. For the main effect of particle size, pigs fed finer ground corn had significantly improved feed efficiency (P0.82). There was no difference in salmonella infection rates of mesenteric lymph nodes obtained on d 28 between treatments or main effects. Finer grinding and meal diets generally improved growth, feed intake, and
feed efficiency compared to pigs fed coarser
ground or pelleted feeds. However, particle

Between supply and demand: the limits to participatory development in South Africa
Much of the focus in the literature on participatory development has been on the
demand side and on the extent to which citizens succeed in pressuring the state to
deliver basic services. Less attention has been focused on the supply side of participatory
development, namely on how state institutions give effect to development policies.
Post-Apartheid South Africa is replete with policies and legislation supporting participatory
processes and yet in practice this has seldom lived up to the ideals espoused.
This article examines the delivery of public housing in poor communities in three
municipalities in South Africa and argues that there is a mismatch between how the
formulators of policy understand participation and how it is interpreted by beneficiary
communities and local officials. It concludes that considerably more attention needs to
be focused on why officials fail to translate national policies into action if participatory
democracy is to attain any legitimacy in the population at large.Web of Scienc
Astrophysical structures from primordial quantum black holes
The characteristic sizes of astrophysical structures, up to the whole
observed Universe, can be recovered, in principle, assuming that gravity is the
overall interaction assembling systems starting from microscopic scales, whose
order of magnitude is ruled by the Planck length and the related Compton
wavelength. This result agrees with the absence of screening mechanisms for the
gravitational interaction and could be connected to the presence of Yukawa
corrections in the Newtonian potential which introduce typical interaction
lengths. This result directly comes out from quantization of primordial black
holes and then characteristic interaction lengths directly emerge from quantum

Influence of L-carnitine on litter characteristics from gilts harvested at day 40, 55, and 70 of gestation
Swine research, 2005 is known as Swine day, 2005A total of 59 gilts were used to determine the effects of supplemental L-carnitine on reproductive performance. Experimental treatments were arranged in a 2 × 3 factorial with main effects of L-carnitine (0 or 50 ppm) and day of gestation (40, 55, or 70). All gilts received a constant feed allowance of 3.86 lb/day and a top-dress containing either 0 or 88 mg of L-carnitine, starting on the first day of breeding and continuing until the day of harvest. Total litter size, total litter weight, and crown-to-rump length of fetuses were not different (P>0.10) between treatments at any gestation length. By d 70 of gestation, average fetus weight was heavier (P = 0.06) for fetuses from gilts fed L-carnitine, compared with fetuses from gilts fed the control diet. In
addition, at d 70, fetal insulin-like growth factor- II (IGF-II) concentrations were lower (P = 0.09) for fetuses from gilts fed L-carnitine than for fetuses from gilts fed the control diet. Feeding L-carnitine may have decreased fetal IGF-II, therefore increasing cell proliferation and delaying cell differentiation. These results show that providing supplemental Lcarnitine to gestating gilts has beneficial effects on average fetal weight, possibly observed because of its ability to reduce fetal IGF-II concentrations
Synaptogyrin-2 influences replication of Porcine circovirus 2
Porcine circovirus 2 (PCV2) is a circular single-stranded DNA virus responsible for a group of diseases collectively known as PCV2 Associated Diseases (PCVAD). Variation in the incidence and severity of PCVAD exists between pigs suggesting a host genetic component involved in pathogenesis. A large-scale genome-wide association study of experimentally infected pigs (n = 974), provided evidence of a host genetic role in PCV2 viremia, immune response and growth during challenge. Host genotype explained 64% of the phenotypic variation for overall viral load, with two major Quantitative Trait Loci (QTL) identified on chromosome 7 (SSC7) near the swine leukocyte antigen complex class II locus and on the proximal end of chromosome 12 (SSC12). The SNP having the strongest association, ALGA0110477 (SSC12), explained 9.3% of the genetic and 6.2% of the phenotypic variance for viral load. Dissection of the SSC12 QTL based on gene annotation, genomic and RNA-sequencing, suggested that a missense mutation in the SYNGR2 (SYNGR2 p.Arg63Cys) gene is potentially responsible for the variation in viremia. This polymorphism, located within a protein domain conserved across mammals, results in an amino acid variant SYNGR2 p.63Cys only observed in swine. PCV2 titer in PK15 cells decreased when the expression of SYNGR2 was silenced by specific-siRNA, indicating a role of SYNGR2 in viral replication. Additionally, a PK15 edited clone generated by CRISPR-Cas9, carrying a partial deletion of the second exon that harbors a key domain and the SYNGR2 p.Arg63Cys, was associated with a lower viral titer compared to wildtype PK15 cells (\u3e24 hpi) and supernatant (\u3e48hpi)(P \u3c 0.05). Identification of a non-conservative substitution in this key domain of SYNGR2 suggests that the SYNGR2 p.Arg63Cys variant may underlie the observed genetic effect on viral load

Predictions for ASKAP Neutral Hydrogen Surveys
The Australian Square Kilometer Array Pathfinder (ASKAP) will revolutionise
our knowledge of gas-rich galaxies in the Universe. Here we present predictions
for two proposed extragalactic ASKAP neutral hydrogen (HI) emission-line
surveys, based on semi-analytic models applied to cosmological N-body
simulations. The ASKAP HI All-Sky Survey, known as WALLABY, is a shallow 3 Pi
survey (z = 0 - 0.26) which will probe the mass and dynamics of over 600,000
galaxies. A much deeper small-area HI survey, called DINGO, aims to trace the
evolution of HI from z = 0 - 0.43, a cosmological volume of 40 million Mpc^3,
detecting potentially 100,000 galaxies. The high-sensitivity 30 antenna ASKAP
core (diameter ~2 km) will provide an angular resolution of 30 arcsec (at z=0).
Our simulations show that the majority of galaxies detected in WALLABY (87.5%)
will be resolved. About 5000 galaxies will be well resolved, i.e. more than
five beams (2.5 arcmin) across the major axis, enabling kinematic studies of
their gaseous disks. This number would rise to 160,000 galaxies if all 36 ASKAP
antennas could be used; the additional six antennas provide baselines up to 6
km, resulting in an angular resolution of 10 arcsec. For DINGO this increased
resolution is highly desirable to minimise source confusion; reducing confusion
rates from a maximum of 10% of sources at the survey edge to 3%. We estimate
that the sources detected by WALLABY and DINGO will span four orders of
magnitude in total halo mass (from 10^{11} to 10^{15} Msol) and nearly seven
orders of magnitude in stellar mass (from 10^{5} to 10^{12} Msol), allowing us
to investigate the process of galaxy formation across the last four billion
