    Katrina and Social Determinants of Health: Toward a Comprehensive Community Emergency Preparedness Approach

    Katrina made landfall in southeast Louisiana on August 29, 2005 as a category four hurricane. This Hurricane proved to be one of the most devastating natural disasters in US history with unofficial death estimates ranging from 1,500 to over 4,000. As of this writing, the post-Katrina mortality rate in Louisiana remains unclear. Two years later, Katrina's overwhelming impact continues to affect the lives of survivors. Thousands of individuals, young and old, remain dispersed across the country. Today's New Orleans is roughly half the size it was prior to Katrina. The Unified New Orleans Plan (UNOP) provided moderate scenario population estimates of 225,257 residents in January 2007, 267,631 by 2008, and 299,278 by January 2009. According to the UNOP, population growth is expected to occur slowly with a slight increase associated with the Road Home funds. Nonetheless, many residents have decided not to return, while others anticipate returning when the conditions necessary to support a safer return are in place. The aftermath of this disaster will impact immeasurably at least two generations. There is a plethora of failures at all levels of government associated with the Katrina disaster. Truthfully, everything broke down; governments, private sector organizations, and individuals were ill prepared to respond in a timely manner. Indeed a legitimate role exists for criticism in that it can lead to learning and improvement. To what extent have we acted on what we've learned? Are we better prepared today than we were before Katrina? How much better prepared? Enough to make a difference should another hurricane or other disaster strike

    Substitutions near the hemagglutinin receptor-binding site determine the antigenic evolution of influenza A H3N2 viruses in U.S. swine

    Swine influenza A virus is an endemic and economically important pathogen in pigs, with the potential to infect other host species. The hemagglutinin (HA) protein is the primary target of protective immune responses and the major component in swine influenza A vaccines. However, as a result of antigenic drift, vaccine strains must be regularly updated to reflect currently circulating strains. Characterizing the cross-reactivity between strains in pigs and seasonal influenza virus strains in humans is also important in assessing the relative risk of interspecies transmission of viruses from one host population to the other. Hemagglutination inhibition (HI) assay data for swine and human H3N2 viruses were used with antigenic cartography to quantify the antigenic differences among H3N2 viruses isolated from pigs in the United States from 1998 to 2013 and the relative cross-reactivity between these viruses and current human seasonal influenza A virus strains. Two primary antigenic clusters were found circulating in the pig population, but with enough diversity within and between the clusters to suggest updates in vaccine strains are needed. We identified single amino acid substitutions that are likely responsible for antigenic differences between the two primary antigenic clusters and between each antigenic cluster and outliers. The antigenic distance between current seasonal influenza virus H3 strains in humans and those endemic in swine suggests that population immunity may not prevent the introduction of human viruses into pigs, and possibly vice versa, reinforcing the need to monitor and prepare for potential incursions

    Diverse molecular mechanisms involved in AChR deficiency due to rapsyn mutations

    Congenital myasthenic syndromes are inherited disorders of neuromuscular transmission characterized by fatigable muscle weakness. Autosomal recessive acetylcholine receptor (AChR) deficiency syndromes, in which levels of this receptor at the neuromuscular junction are severely reduced, may be caused by mutations within genes encoding the AChR or the AChR-clustering protein, rapsyn. Most patients have mutations within the rapsyn coding region and are either homozygous for N88K or heteroallelic for N88K and a second mutation. In some cases the second allele carries a null mutation but in many the mutations are missense, and are located in different functional domains. Little is known about the functional effects of these mutations, but we hypothesize that they would have an effect on AChR clustering by a variety of mechanisms that might correlate with disease severity. Here we expressed RAPSN mutations A25V, N88K, R91L, L361R and K373del in TE671 cells and in rapsyn−/− myotubes to determine their pathogenic mechanisms. The A25Vmutation impaired colocalization of rapsyn with AChR and prevented agrin-induced AChR clusters in rapsyn−/− myotubes. In TE671 cells, R91L reduced the ability of rapsyn to self-associate, and K373del-rapsyn was significantly less stable than wild-type. The effects of mutations L361R and N88K were more subtle: in TE671 cells, in comparison with wild-type rapsyn, L361R-rapsyn showed reduced expression/stability, and both N88K-rapsyn and L361R-rapsyn showed significantly reduced co-localization with AChR. N88K-rapsyn and L361R-rapsyn could effectively mediate agrin-induced AChR clusters, but these were reduced in number and were less stable than with wild-type rapsyn. The disease severity of patients harbouring the compound allelic mutations was greater than that of patients with homozygous rapsyn mutation N88K, suggesting that the second mutant allele may largely determine severit

    A fast radio burst with a low dispersion measure

    Fast radio bursts (FRBs) are millisecond pulses of radio emission of seemingly extragalactic origin. More than 50 FRBs have now been detected, with only one seen to repeat. Here we present a new FRB discovery, FRB 110214, which was detected in the high latitude portion of the High Time Resolution Universe South survey at the Parkes telescope. FRB 110214 has one of the lowest dispersion measures of any known FRB (DM = 168.9±\pm0.5 pc cm−3^{-3}), and was detected in two beams of the Parkes multi-beam receiver. A triangulation of the burst origin on the sky identified three possible regions in the beam pattern where it may have originated, all in sidelobes of the primary detection beam. Depending on the true location of the burst the intrinsic fluence is estimated to fall in the range of 50 -- 2000 Jy ms, making FRB 110214 one of the highest-fluence FRBs detected with the Parkes telescope. No repeating pulses were seen in almost 100 hours of follow-up observations with the Parkes telescope down to a limiting fluence of 0.3 Jy ms for a 2-ms pulse. Similar low-DM, ultra-bright FRBs may be detected in telescope sidelobes in the future, making careful modeling of multi-beam instrument beam patterns of utmost importance for upcoming FRB surveys.Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in MNRA

    The production industry is moving towards the next generation of assembly, which is conducted based on safe and reliable robots working in the same workplace alongside with humans. Focusing on assembly tasks, this paper presents a review of human-robot collaboration research and its classification works. Aside from defining key terms and relations, the paper also proposes means of describing human-robot collaboration that can be relied on during detailed elaboration of solutions. A human-robot collaborative assembly system is developed with a novel and comprehensive structure, and a case study is presented to validate the proposed framework. © 2017

    Leiomyosarcoma of the right atrium is a very rare cardiac tumor. Various combinations of treatments including resection or transplant surgery and Chemotherapy have been advocated. We report a case of a man who presented with pulmonary embolism secondary to right atrial leiomyosarcoma. He was managed by excision of the tumor and reconstruction of the right atrium with autologous pericardium. Postoperatively tumor dissemination was controlled with adjuvant chemotherapy

    Emplacement of inflated Pāhoehoe flows in the Naude’s Nek Pass, Lesotho remnant, Karoo continental flood basalt province: use of flow-lobe tumuli in understanding flood basalt emplacement

    Physical volcanological features are presented for a 710-m-thick section, of the Naude’s Nek Pass, within the lower part of the Lesotho remnant of the Karoo Large Igneous Province. The section consists of inflated pāhoehoe lava with thin, impersistent sedimentary interbeds towards the base. There are seven discreet packages of compound and hummocky pāhoehoe lobes containing flow-lobe tumuli, making up approximately 50% of the section. Approximately 45% of the sequence consists of 14 sheet lobes, between 10 and 52-m-thick. The majority of the sheet lobes are in two packages indicating prolonged periods of lava supply capable of producing thick sheet lobes. The other sheet lobes are as individual lobes or pairs, within compound flows, suggesting brief increases in lava supply rate. We suggest, contrary to current belief, that there is no evidence that compound flows are proximal to source and sheet lobes (simple flows) are distal to source and we propose that the presence of flow-lobe tumuli in compound flows could be an indicator that a flow is distal to source. We use detailed, previously published, studies of the Thakurvadi Formation (Deccan Traps) as an example. We show that the length of a lobe and therefore the sections that are ‘medial or distal to source’ are specific to each individual lobe and are dependent on the lava supply of each eruptive event, and as such flow lobe tumuli can be used as an indicator of relative distance from source

    Planetary Candidates Observed by Kepler VI: Planet Sample from Q1-Q16 (47 Months)

    \We present the sixth catalog of Kepler candidate planets based on nearly 4 years of high precision photometry. This catalog builds on the legacy of previous catalogs released by the Kepler project and includes 1493 new Kepler Objects of Interest (KOIs) of which 554 are planet candidates, and 131 of these candidates have best fit radii <1.5 R_earth. This brings the total number of KOIs and planet candidates to 7305 and 4173 respectively. We suspect that many of these new candidates at the low signal-to-noise limit may be false alarms created by instrumental noise, and discuss our efforts to identify such objects. We re-evaluate all previously published KOIs with orbital periods of >50 days to provide a consistently vetted sample that can be used to improve planet occurrence rate calculations. We discuss the performance of our planet detection algorithms, and the consistency of our vetting products.
