    Stewarding 2,4-D- and dicamba- based weed control technologies in cotton and soybean production systems

    Distinguishing 2,4-D and dicamba herbicide formulations in cotton and soybean tissue is challenging in regulation of crop injury from these herbicides. Additionally, stewardship of 2,4-D and dicamba technologies is important to maximize their longevity and efficacy. Research was conducted to (1) characterize cotton and soybean response to various formulations of 2,4-D or dicamba with or without glyphosate, (2) develop a method for classifying these formulations in crop tissue, and (3) optimize use of chloroacetamide herbicides in dicamba systems for mitigation of selection pressure on dicamba. Formulations evaluated include dicamba diglycolamine (DGA), dimethylamine (DMA), N,N-Bis-(3-aminopropyl) methylamine (BAPMA), and DGA plus potassium acetate (KAc); and 2,4-D DMA, acid, isooctyl ester (ESTER), and choline. Weed management by the chloroacetamides s-metolachlor and acetochlor was evaluated with applications preemergence (PRE), early postemergence (EP), late postemergence (LP), PRE followed by (fb) EP, PRE fb LP, and EP fb LP. Cotton and soybean response differed by 2,4-D and dicamba formulation, and glyphosate presence. Cotton yield was reduced by 200 to 500 kg ha-1 following exposure to 2,4-D choline or DMA relative to acid or ESTER. Glyphosate presence led to a reduction in cotton and soybean yield of 377 and 572 kg ha-1, respectively. Exposure to dicamba DMA resulted in a 263 kg ha-1 reduction in soybean yield relative to dicamba DGA, and glyphosate presence reduced yield by 439 and 246 kg ha-1 in cotton and soybeans, respectively. Chemometric analyses generated models capable of up to 85% accuracy in identifying dicamba formulation in cotton and soybean tissue, and up to 80% accuracy in identifying 2,4-D formulation. Split chloroacetamide applications improved cotton yield up to 60%, reduced weed densities up to 90%, and improved control up to 56% relative to single applications. Cotton height was reduced up to 23% if a single chloroacetamide application was made. Soybean yield was maximized following any chloroacetamide application timing except PRE alone, and weed control was reduced up to 31% following single chloroacetamide application relative to split applications. These results will aid regulatory bodies in managing use of new weed control technologies and will assist producers in stewarding these new technologies

    Modern soil science, spearheaded by research in Brazil has facilitated the utilization of vast areas of previously uncultivated soil long considered unsuitable for human food production into highly productive agricultural land. Naturally acid soils with high contents of aluminum and iron oxides and low CEC values and organic matter contents long considered insurmountable obstacles to crop production in tropical latitudes could be extremely productive. With continued development of the infrastructure needed by commercial agriculture Brazil has the potential to lead the world in its quest to provide food for growing human populations.A moderna ciência de solo, liderada pelas suas pesquisas no Brasil, tem possibilitado a utilização de vastas áreas de solos, durante muito tempo não cultivados por serem avaliados como inaptos para uma intensiva produção de alimentos. Hoje, ao contrário, constata-se que essas terras são altamente produtivas para a agricultura. Estas pesquisas vêm mostrando que alguns atributos naturais destes solos, como acidez, baixos teores de matéria orgânica, baixa capacidade de troca de cátions, além de altos teores de óxidos de ferro e/ou de alumínio - considerados como obstáculos à produção de boas colheitas em latitudes tropicais - podem ser superados. Com a continuação do desenvolvimento das infra-estruturas necessárias para alavancar ainda mais a agricultura comercial, o Brasil tem potencial para, em breve, liderar o mundo no que tange ao fornecimento de alimentos para as crescentes populações humanas

    Soil-Saprolite Profiles Derived from Mafic Rocks in the North Carolina Piedmont: II. Association of Free Iron Oxides with Soils and Clays

    The association of free Fe oxides with soils and clays from two Enon sandy loam (Ultic Hapludalfs, fine, mixed, thermic) soilsaprolite profiles was studied. Goethite was the dominant Fe oxide identified. Lepidocrocite was detected in trace amounts in some samples. FeCBD/clay ratios were highest in the epipedons of these soils suggesting the concentrating of Fe oxides as a result of aluminosilicate mineral weathering. External (BET-N2) surface area measurements of non-deferrated and deferrated clays were analyzed in conjunction with electron micrographs of selected clay fractions to determine the association of free Fe oxides with aluminosilicate clays as a function of depth in the profile. Free Fe oxides were found to exist mainly as small, discrete clusters in the A and B horizons of both profiles and specific of the clay surface decreased as a result of treatment for Fe removal. However, external surface areas increased for the saprolite (Cr) horizon clays after deferration. One subfraction identified as having an increase in surface area after deferration was fine clay from the Cr2 horizon, Enon (metagabbro) profile. Chemical data and electron micrographs suggest that either partial dissolution of small, poorly crystalline aluminosilicate clays or removal of some Fe or non-Fe oxide aggregating agent results in breakdown of the fine clays into smaller particles of higher net specific surface

    The chemical, morphological and mineralogical properties of two Enon sandy loam (fine, mixed, thermic Ultic Hapludalfs) soilsaprolite profiles, one formed on gabbro and the other on metagabbro, are compared. Clay skins are scarce and stress cutans common in the argillic horizons of these soils. Iron-manganese concretions are concentrated in soil horizons immediately above the argillic horizons. The high shrink-swell capacities and slow permeabilities of the argillic horizons result in relatively shallow depths to paralithic contact with saprolite. The parent rock from the Enon profile near Albemarle, Stanly County, North Carolina is a medium-grained metagabbro with chlorite, hornblende, quartz, and calcic plagioclase feldspar as the dominant primary minerals. Chlorite weathers to regularly interstratified chlorite-vermiculite, which alters to randomly interstratified chlorite-vermiculite and smectite. Particle size decreases with each mineral alteration. Hornblende weathers to smectite and goethite. Calcic plagioclase feldspar transforms to kaolinite in the saprolite and soil horizons. Quartz is relatively resistant to chemical weathering. The parent rock of the Enon profile near Concord, Cabarrus County, North Carolina is a coarse-grained gabbro with hornblende and calcic plagioclase feldspar as the dominant primary minerals. Hornblende transforms to smectite and goethite. Calcic plagioclase feldspar alters to kaolinite in the saprolite and soil horizon

    Four forms of a salt combining two antitubercular drugs, clofazimine and 4-aminosalicylic acid, are reported and the crystal structure of two of these forms are described. TG/DSC analysis of all four forms demonstrate an increase in the temperature at which degradation (upon decarboxylation) occurs in comparison to pure 4-aminosalicylic acid. Water solubility evaluation indicates a significant increase of the amount of clofazimine detected in water (10.26 ± 0.52 mg/mL for form I, 12.27 ± 0.32 mg/mL for form II, 7.15 ± 0.43 mg/mL for form III and 8.50 ± 1.24 mg/mL for form IV) in comparison to pure clofazimine (0.20 ± 0.03 mg/mL
