Transversely Polarized Drell-Yan Process and Soft Gluon Resummation in QCD
We calculate the transverse-momentum spectrum of the dilepton in the
transversely polarized Drell-Yan process on the basis of the factorization
theorem in QCD. We take into account universal logarithmically enhanced
corrections in edge region of phase space by resumming multiple soft-gluon

Horticultural markets promote alien species invasions : an Estonian case study of herbaceous perennials
Gardening is a popular pastime, but commercial horticulture is responsible for the introduction of alien species and contributes to invasions in a variety of ways. Although an extensive international literature is available on plant invasions, it is still important at the national level to examine the influence of local factors. Accordingly, 17 nurseries in Estonia that cultivated and sold perennial alien species were selected, and a list of species and prices was compiled. The relationships between species status, and factors such as their abundance in the wild were examined statistically. A qualitative list of the nationally problematic species among herbaceous perennials was also completed. A total of 880 taxa were recorded, of which 10.3% were native and 89.7% alien. In all, 87.3% of the alien species were still confined to cultivated areas. The ecological and socio-economic characteristics of the taxa were described, and lists of the families of casual, naturalised and invasive aliens were provided. Both native and increasing wild alien species have a very similar profile on the market. Alien species that are less expensive, widely available and have more cultivars per species on the market are also more likely to escape. The invasive status and abundance of escaped aliens in an area increases with residence time. In general, socio-economic factors create new and reflect previous propagule pressures from commercial horticulture, which continuously increase the likelihood of alien species surviving and invading new areas. Our findings suggest that these national socioeconomic market-related factors explain much of the invasiveness of various perennial ornamental species, and therefore regional and national authorities urgently need to regulate and control the ornamental plant trade to diminish the risk of new invasions

White matter hyperintensities and within-person variability in community-dwelling adults aged 60–64 years
Estimates of white matter hyperintensities (WMH) derived from T2-weighted MRI were investigated in relation to cognitive performance in 469 healthy community-dwelling adults aged 60–64 years. Frontal lobe WMH but not WMH from other brain regions (temporal, parietal, and occipital lobes, anterior and posterior horn, periventricular body) were associated with elevated within-person reaction time (RT) variability (trial to trial fluctuations in RT performance) but not performance on several other cognitive tasks including psychomotor speed, memory, and global cognition. The findings are consistent with the view that elevated within-person variability is related to neurobiological disturbance, and that attentional mechanisms supported by the frontal cortex play a key role in this type of variability
Intra-individual reaction time variability and all-cause mortality over 17 years: A community-based cohort study
Background: very few studies have examined the association between intra-individual reaction time variability and subsequent mortality. Furthermore, the ability of simple measures of variability to predict mortality has not been compared with more complex measures. Method: a prospective cohort study of 896 community-based Australian adults aged 70+ were interviewed up to four times from 1990 to 2002, with vital status assessed until June 2007. From this cohort, 770–790 participants were included in Cox proportional hazards regression models of survival. Vital status and time in study were used to conduct survival analyses. The mean reaction time and three measures of intra-individual reaction time variability were calculated separately across 20 trials of simple and choice reaction time tasks. Models were adjusted for a range of demographic, physical health and mental health measures. Results: greater intra-individual simple reaction time variability, as assessed by the raw standard deviation (raw SD), coefficient of variation (CV) or the intra-individual standard deviation (ISD), was strongly associated with an increased hazard of all-cause mortality in adjusted Cox regression models. The mean reaction time had no significant association with mortality. Conclusion: intra-individual variability in simple reaction time appears to have a robust association with mortality over 17 years. Health professionals such as neuropsychologists may benefit in their detection of neuropathology by supplementing neuropsychiatric testing with the straightforward process of testing simple reaction time and calculating raw SD or CV
A hierarchy of compatibility and comeasurability levels in quantum logics with unique conditional probabilities
In the quantum mechanical Hilbert space formalism, the probabilistic
interpretation is a later ad-hoc add-on, more or less enforced by the
experimental evidence, but not motivated by the mathematical model itself. A
model involving a clear probabilistic interpretation from the very beginning is
provided by the quantum logics with unique conditional probabilities. It
includes the projection lattices in von Neumann algebras and here probability
conditionalization becomes identical with the state transition of the Lueders -
von Neumann measurement process. This motivates the definition of a hierarchy
of five compatibility and comeasurability levels in the abstract setting of the
quantum logics with unique conditional probabilities. Their meanings are: the
absence of quantum interference or influence, the existence of a joint
distribution, simultaneous measurability, and the independence of the final
state after two successive measurements from the sequential order of these two
measurements. A further level means that two elements of the quantum logic
(events) belong to the same Boolean subalgebra. In the general case, the five
compatibility and comeasurability levels appear to differ, but they all
coincide in the common Hilbert space formalism of quantum mechanics, in von
Neumann algebras, and in some other cases.Comment: 12 page

A note on the ring current in Saturn's magnetosphere: Comparison of magnetic data obtained during the Pioneer-11 and Voyager-1 and -2 fly-bys
International audienceWe examine the residual (measured minus internal) magnetic field vectors observed in Saturn's magnetosphere during the Pioneer-11 fly-by in 1979, and compare them with those observed during the Voyager-1 and -2 fly-bys in 1980 and 1981. We show for the first time that a ring current system was present within the magnetosphere during the Pioneer-11 encounter, which was qualitatively similar to those present during the Voyager fly-bys. The analysis also shows, however, that the ring current was located closer to the planet during the Pioneer-11 encounter than during the comparable Voyager-1 fly-by, reflecting the more com-pressed nature of the magnetosphere at the time. The residual field vectors have been fit using an adaptation of the current system proposed for Jupiter by Connerney et al. (1981a). A model that provides a reasonably good fit to the Pioneer-11 Saturn data extends radially between 6.5 and 12.5 RS (compared with a noon-sector magnetopause distance of 17 RS), has a north-south extent of 4 RS, and carries a total current of 9.6 MA. A corresponding model that provides a qualitatively similar fit to the Voyager data, determined previously by Connerney et al. (1983), extends radially between 8 and 15.5 RS (compared with a noon-sector magnetopause distance for Voyager-1 of 23?24 RS), has a north-south extent of 6 RS, and carries a total current of 11.5 MA
Helicity amplitudes and crossing relations for antiproton proton reactions
Antiproton proton annihilation reactions allow unique access to the moduli
and phases of nucleon electromagnetic form factors in the time like region. We
present the helicity amplitudes for the unequal mass single photon reaction in the s channel including the lepton mass. The relative
signs of these amplitudes are determined using simple invariance properties.
Helicity amplitudes for the annihilation reaction are
also given, where is any spinor particle with structure. Crossing relations
between the scattering and the
annihilation channels are discussed and the crossing matrix for the helicity
amplitudes is given. This matrix may be used to verify known expressions for

Rethinking clinical trials of transcranial direct current stimulation: Participant and assessor blinding is inadequate at intensities of 2mA

The article was made available through the Brunel University Open Access Publishing Fund.Background: Many double-blind clinical trials of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) use stimulus intensities of 2 mA despite the fact that blinding has not been formally validated under these conditions. The aim of this study was to test the assumption that sham 2 mA tDCS achieves effective blinding. Methods:
A randomised double blind crossover trial. 100 tDCS-naïve healthy volunteers were incorrectly advised that they there were taking part in a trial of tDCS on word memory. Participants attended for two separate sessions. In each session, they completed a word memory task, then received active or sham tDCS (order randomised) at 2 mA stimulation intensity for 20 minutes and then repeated the word memory task. They then judged whether they believed they had received active stimulation and rated their confidence in that judgement. The blinded assessor noted when red marks were observed at the electrode sites post-stimulation. Results: tDCS at 2 mA was not effectively blinded. That is, participants correctly judged the stimulation condition greater than would be expected to by chance at both the first session (kappa level of agreement (κ) 0.28, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.09 to 0.47 p = 0.005) and the second session (κ = 0.77, 95%CI 0.64 to 0.90), p = <0.001) indicating inadequate participant blinding. Redness at the reference electrode site was noticeable following active stimulation more than sham stimulation (session one, κ = 0.512, 95%CI 0.363 to 0.66, p<0.001; session two, κ = 0.677, 95%CI 0.534 to 0.82) indicating inadequate assessor blinding. Conclusions: Our results suggest that blinding in studies using tDCS at intensities of 2 mA is inadequate.
