Viejas y nuevas plagas. Una mirada crítica a los riesgos biológicos en los inicios del siglo XXI

Los inicios del siglo XXI vienen marcados por la permanencia de viejas plagas médicas, como la tuberculosis, el paludismo o el cólera, por otras nuevas, como el sida, el síndrome respiratorio agudo y severo (SARS) o la «gripe del pollo», pero, asimismo, por la permanencia de plagas agrícolas, como la de la langosta, que en el pasado fue calificada como «plaga bíblica». Frente a las concepciones optimistas de la década de 1960 que se manejaron sobre las plagas en general, cuando se pensó que se podrían erradicar, desde hace unas dos décadas ya se han acuñado expresiones como «retorno de las plagas» o «regreso de las epidemias». Éstas dan a entender que el problema no sólo permanece, sino que en algunos casos se ha agravado. Este trabajo pretende realizar un análisis crítico de la cuestión.El començament del segle XXI està marcat per la permanència de velles plagues mèdiques, com ara la tuberculosi, el paludisme o el còlera, l'aparició d'unes altres, com ara la sida, la síndrome respiratòria aguda i severa (SARS) o la «grip del pollastre», i també per la permanència de plagues agrícoles, com ara la de la llagosta, qualificada en el passat de «plaga bíblica». Davant les concepcions optimistes sobre les plagues en general de la dècada de 1960, moment en el qual es va pensar que es podrien eradicar, des de fa unes dues dècades ja han aparegut les expressions «retorn de les plagues» i «retorn de les epidèmies». Aquestes donen a entendre no tan sols que el problema encara roman, sinó que en alguns casos s'ha agreujat. Aquest treball pretén realitzar una anàlisi crítica de la qüestió.Le début du XXIème siècle est marqué par de vieilles épidémies médicales telles la tuberculose, le paludisme ou le choléra par d'autres maladies nouvelles comme le sida, le syndrome respiratoire aigu et sévère ou la grippe asiatique. Mais de la même façon par la permanence de fléaux comme celui de la sauterelle qui dans le passé fut qualifiée de fléau biblique. Face aux conceptions optimistes des années 60 du siècle dernier qui ont mené sur les épidémies en général, lorsqu'on a pensé qu'elles pourraient être supprimées, depuis environ deux décades on a déjà adopté des expressions comme «retour de fléaux» ou «retour des épidémies» ils laissent entendre que le problème non seulement reste permanent mais dans certains cas il s'aggrave. Ce travail réalise une analyse critique de cette question.At the beginning of the twenty-first century old plagues remain, like tuberculosis, malaria and cholera. New plagues like aids, sars or «chicken influenza» have appeared. Agricultural plagues, like locust, a biblical plague, have remained too. Against optimistic conceptions about plagues in the 60s of last century when scientific elites thought about their eradication, two decades ago critical points of view appeared about this conception and scientists proclaimed the return of plagues. In fact plagues haven't disappeared and in some cases the problem is worsening. This research tries to make a critical analysis about the question

Roughness evolution of previously milled samples along a polishing test

In the present work results about roughness evolution along a polishing operation with corundum disks of size Norton 400 are presented. Hardened steel and hardened stainless steel samples were previously subjected to ball-end milling or side milling with cylindrical tool at different cutting conditions. Roughness height parameters Ra and Rt, as well as parameters related to the Abbott-Firestone curve such as Rk, Rpk, and Rvk, and shape parameters such as Rsk and Rku were studied. It is usually considered that a polishing operation is complete when Ra does not decrease significantly with more polishing time. In the present paper, an alternative method for determining the end of a polishing test is presented. Roughness is measured both in the longitudinal and in the transversal direction with respect to cutting marks, and it is assumed that the polishing operation is finished when longitudinal values equal transversal values, provided that from that moment on roughness values do not decrease significantly. Moreover, it is recommended to measure parameter Rvk in addition to or even instead of Ra, in order to obtain information about the presence of valleys from the previous milling operation.Postprint (author's final draft

El curt segle XX

Els homenatges que es van celebrar després de la mort d'Eric Hobsbawm, l'octubre del 2012, van obrir de nou un espai de discussió al voltant de la seva obra escrita. Ha estat segurament un dels esperits més avançats del segle XX, segle de fortes evolucions dins del pensament històric, sobretot quan s'ha hagut de formar un concepte vàlid d'aproximació a la història contemporània. Ens proposem plantejar la relació entre el treball específic de l'historiador, examinant la pròpia ideologització del discurs històric i la seva inserció dins d'un aspecte particular de la recerca històrica, la que s'interessa en la història actual. Aquesta posició particular de l'historiador quan tracta d'un temps que coincideix amb la seva biografia personal sotmet la seva interpretació dels fets a un debat o a una controvèrsia permanents. Examinant alguns exemples contemporanis no exhaustius, intentarem saber si aquesta implicació biogràfica ha influenciat la seva determinació a pensar el segle XX. I si la definició global que dóna no tenia fonaments més en criteris personals que científics, principalment quan ho va definir com a segle curt.Los homenajes que se celebraron después de la muerte de Eric Hobsbawm, en octubre del 2012, abrieron de nuevo un espacio de discusión alrededor de su obra escrita. Ha sido seguramente uno de los espíritus más avanzados del siglo XX, siglo de fuertes evoluciones dentro del pensamiento histórico, sobre todo cuando se ha tenido que formar un concepto válido de aproximación a la historia contemporánea. Nos proponemos plantear la relación entre el trabajo específico del historiador, examinando la propia ideologización del discurso histórico y su inserción dentro de un aspecto particular de la investigación histórica, la que se interesa en la historia actual. Esta posición particular del historiador cuando trata de un tiempo que coincide con su biografía personal somete su interpretación de los hechos a un debate o a una controversia permanentes. Examinando algunos ejemplos contemporáneos no exhaustivos, intentaremos saber si esta implicación biográfica ha influenciado su determinación en pensar el siglo XX. Y si la definición global que da no tenía fundamentos más en criterios personales que científicos, principalmente cuando lo definió como siglo corto.After Eric Hobsbawm death, on October 2012, homages in his honor opened again a space of discussion about his written work. Hobsbawn has probably been one of the most advanced spirits of the XX century, a century of strong evolutions inside the historical thought, specially when a valid concept to approach the contemporary history has been necessary. This paper discusses the relation between the specific work of the historian, analyzing the ideological component of his discourse, and its role in a particular aspect of the historical research, the one that deals with the current history. When a historian deals with a period of time of his own biography, his interpretation of the facts are under a permanent debate and controverse. By examinating some contemporary examples, we will try to know if this biographical involvement has influenced Hobsbawn's thought of the XX century, and if the global definition he proposed was founded more in personal than in scientific criteria, specially when he defined the century as the short century

Influence of Print Orientation on Surface Roughness in Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) Processes

In the present paper, we address the influence of print orientation angle on surface roughnessobtained in lateral walls in fused deposition modelling (FDM) processes. A geometrical model isdefined that considers the shape of the filaments after deposition, in order to define a theoreticalroughness profile, for a certain print orientation angle. Different angles were considered between 5¿and 85¿. Simulated arithmetical mean height of the roughness profile, Ra values, were calculated fromthe simulated profiles. The Ra simulated results were compared to the experimental results, whichwere carried out with cylindrical PLA (polylactic acid) samples. The simulated Ra values were similarto the experimental values, except for high angles above 80¿, where experimental roughness decreasedwhile simulated roughness was still high. Low print orientation angles show regular profiles withrounded peaks and sharp values. At a print orientation angle of 85¿, the shape of the profile changeswith respect to lower angles, showing a gap between adjacent peaks. At 90¿, both simulated andexperimental roughness values would be close to zero, because the measurement direction is parallelto the layer orientation. Other roughness parameters were also measured: maximum height ofprofile, Rz, kurtosis, Rku, skewness, Rsk, and mean width of the profile elements, Rsm. At high printorientation angles, Rz decreases, Rku shifts to positive, Rsk slightly increases, and Rsk decreases,showing the change in the shape of the roughness profiles.Postprint (published version

Neural network modelling of Abbott-Firestone roughness parameters in honing processes

In present study, three roughness parameters defined in the Abbott-Firestone or bearing area curve, Rk, Rpk and Rvk, were modelled for rough honing processes by means of artificial neural networks (ANN). Input variables were grain size and density of abrasive, pressure of abrasive stones on the workpiece's surface, tangential or rotation speed of the workpiece and linear speed of the honing head. Two strategies were considered, either use of one network for modelling the three parameters at the same time or use of three networks, one for each parameter. Overall best neural network consists of three networks, one for each roughness parameter, with one hidden layer having 25, nine and five neurons for Rk, Rpk and Rvk respectively. However, use of one network for the three roughness parameters would allow addressing an indirect model. In this case, best solution corresponds to two hidden layers having 26 and 11 neurons.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft
