    Role of lysosomal enzymes released by alveolar macrophages in the pathogenesis of the acute phase of hypersensitivity pneumonitis

    Hydrolytic enzymes are the major constituents of alveolar macrophages (AM) and have been shown to be involved in many aspects of the inflammatory pulmonary response. The aim of this study was to evaluate the role of lysosomal enzymes in the acute phase of hypersensitivity pneumonitis (HPs). An experimental study on AM lysosomal enzymes of an HP-guinea-pig model was performed. The results obtained both in vivo and in vitro suggest that intracellular enzymatic activity decrease is, at least partly, due to release of lysosomal enzymes into the medium. A positive but slight correlation was found between extracellular lysosomal activity and four parameters of lung lesion (lung index, bronchoalveolar fluid total (BALF) protein concentration, BALF LDH and BALF alkaline phosphatase activities). All the above findings suggest that the AM release of lysosomal enzymes during HP is a factor involved, although possibly not the only one, in the pulmonary lesions appearing in this disease

    La exposición al ruido en el puesto de trabajo y la pérdida auditiva inducida por ruido se encuentran estrechamente relacionadas con las actitudes que tienen de los trabajadores sobre el uso de los dispositivos de protección auditiva. En estudios previos se ha demostrado que los trabajadores son reacios a su utilización por diferentes motivos: desconocimiento de los efectos que produce el ruido sobre la salud auditiva, dificultades para utilizarlos de forma correcta, incomodidad, etc. Con el objetivo de mejorar las actitudes de los trabajadores ante el uso de dispositivos de protección auditiva se llevó a cabo un estudio bibliográfico sobre los factores que influyen en la conducta de los trabajadores ante el uso de protectores auditivos, así como su conocimiento sobre los riesgos asociados. Una vez analizados los antecedentes y las actuales necesidades, se desarrollaron herramientas interactivas de fácil utilización para mejorar la concienciación de los trabajadores sobre este aspecto. Se presenta la revisión bibliográfica sobre el uso de protectores auditivos, un análisis de los diferentes enfoques comúnmente utilizados para formación y concienciación de trabajadores sobre los riesgos derivados de la pérdida auditiva inducida por ruido y finalmente las herramientas desarrolladas como propuesta para mejorar la percepción de dicho riesgo entre los trabajadores

    Seroprevalence of bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) in cattle from Sotaquirá, Colombia

    Worldwide distributed Bovine Viral Diarrhea Virus (BVDV) represents a high risk of infection in most bovine farms, in which it is associated with gastrointestinal, respiratory, and reproductive diseases. The purpose of this research was to establish the seroprevalence and the main risk factors associated with the presentation of BVDV in the municipality of Sotaquirá, Colombia. Samples were taken from 1000 cattle of Holstein, Ayrshire, Jersey, Normande Gyr and Holstein x Gyr. Epidemiological surveys were implemented, reproductive and management variables were taken into consideration. Indirect ELISA was performed to detect specific antibodies against BVDV using the commercial kit SERELISA® BVD p80 Ab Mono Blocking. The overall seroprevalence of antibodies against BVDV was 42.5% (425/1000), where the Gyr breed (59.1% apparent prevalence (AP); 60.3% real prevalence (PR)) and the age group > 4 years (53.0% PA; 54.4% PR) presented the highest seroprevalences. A significant statistical association was found for the breed, age, management practices evaluated and the presentation of PI3 (p ≤ 0.05). Age group > 4 years, Normande breed, presentation of PI3 and grazing lease were established as risk factors associated with BVDV in the herds. These infections are mainly associated with dairy cattle and herds with many animals, so it is important to consider vaccination plans as a preventive system and follow up on the most common diseases

    Quest for the donor star in the magnetic precataclysmic variable V1082 Sgr

    We obtained high-resolution spectra and multicolor photometry of V1082 Sgr to study the donor star in this 20.8 hr orbital period binary, which is assumed to be a detached system. We measured the rotational velocity (v sin i = 26.5 ± 2.0 km s−1), which, coupled with the constraints on the white dwarf mass from the X-ray spectroscopy, leads to the conclusion that the donor star barely fills 70% of its corresponding Roche lobe radius. It appears to be a slightly evolved K2-type star. This conclusion was further supported by a recently published distance to the binary system measured by the Gaia mission. At the same time, it becomes difficult to explain a very high (>10−9 M⊙ yr-1 ) mass transfer and mass accretion rate in a detached binary via stellar wind and magnetic coupling.Publisher PDFPeer reviewe

    Infrared color selection of massive galaxies at z > 3

    We introduce a new color-selection technique to identify high-redshift, massive galaxies that are systematically missed by Lyman-break selection. The new selection is based on the H_{160} and IRAC 4.5um bands, specifically H - [4.5] > 2.25 mag. These galaxies, dubbed "HIEROs", include two major populations that can be separated with an additional J - H color. The populations are massive and dusty star-forming galaxies at z > 3 (JH-blue) and extremely dusty galaxies at z < 3 (JH-red). The 350 arcmin^2 of the GOODS-N and GOODS-S fields with the deepest HST/WFC3 and IRAC data contain 285 HIEROs down to [4.5] 3) HIEROs, which have a median photometric redshift z ~4.4 and stellar massM_{*}~10^{10.6} Msun, and are much fainter in the rest-frame UV than similarly massive Lyman-break galaxies (LBGs). Their star formation rates (SFRs) reaches ~240 Msun yr^{-1} leading to a specific SFR, sSFR ~4.2 Gyr^{-1}, suggesting that the sSFRs for massive galaxies continue to grow at z > 2 but at a lower growth rate than from z=0 to z=2. With a median half-light radius of 2 kpc, including ~20% as compact as quiescent galaxies at similar redshifts, JH-blue HIEROs represent perfect star-forming progenitors of the most massive (M_{*} > 10^{11.2} Msun) compact quiescent galaxies at z ~ 3 and have the right number density. HIEROs make up ~60% of all galaxies with M_{*} > 10^{10.5} Msun identified at z > 3 from their photometric redshifts. This is five times more than LBGs with nearly no overlap between the two populations. While HIEROs make up 15-25% of the total SFR density at z ~ 4-5, they completely dominate the SFR density taking place in M_{*} >10^{10.5} Msun galaxies, and are therefore crucial to understanding the very early phase of massive galaxy formation.Comment: ApJS, in pres

    Measuring star formation in high-z massive galaxies: A mid-infrared to submillimeter study of the GOODS NICMOS Survey sample

    We present measurements of the mean mid-infrared-to-submillimeter flux densities of massive (M\ast \approx 2 \times 10^11 Msun) galaxies at redshifts 1.7 < z < 2.9, obtained by stacking positions of known objects taken from the GOODS NICMOS Survey (GNS) catalog on maps: at 24 {\mu}m (Spitzer/MIPS); 70, 100, and 160{\mu}m (Herschel/PACS); 250, 350, 500{\mu}m (BLAST); and 870{\mu}m (LABOCA). A modified blackbody spectrum fit to the stacked flux densities indicates a median [interquartile] star-formation rate of SFR = 63 [48, 81] Msun yr^-1 . We note that not properly accounting for correlations between bands when fitting stacked data can significantly bias the result. The galaxies are divided into two groups, disk-like and spheroid-like, according to their Sersic indices, n. We find evidence that most of the star formation is occurring in n \leq 2 (disk-like) galaxies, with median [interquartile] SFR = 122 [100,150] Msun yr^-1, while there are indications that the n > 2 (spheroid-like) population may be forming stars at a median [interquartile] SFR = 14 [9,20] Msun yr^-1, if at all. Finally, we show that star formation is a plausible mechanism for size evolution in this population as a whole, but find only marginal evidence that it is what drives the expansion of the spheroid-like galaxies.Comment: Accepted by MNRAS. 10 pages, 3 figures, 3 table

    Hipocalcemia severa o sintomática secundaria a hipoparatiroidismo posoperatorio en cirugía de tiroides: experiencia en un hospital universitario de Medellín, Colombia

    Objetivo: caracterizar la población de pacientes que presentan hipocalcemia severa o sintomática después de una tiroidectomía total y que requieren calcio parenteral. Diseño: estudio observacional retrospectivo realizado en un centro especializado de Medellín, Colombia. Marco de referencia: la hipocalcemia posoperatoria (POP) es una complicación bien reconocida de la tiroidectomía, que se caracteriza por la presencia de hipocalcemia, con niveles de hormona paratiroidea (Parathyroid hormone, PTH) bajos o inadecuadamente normales. La hipocalcemia sintomática o severa (calcio corregido <7,5 mg/dL) es una verdadera emergencia médica, que requiere un rápido diagnóstico y tratamiento con calcio parenteral. Pacientes: pacientes en POP de tiroidectomía que presentan hipocalcemia severa o sintomática. Intervenciones: reposición con calcio parenteral. Resultados: la hipocalcemia severa o sintomática se presentó en el 8 % de los pacientes llevados a una tiroidectomía total, con predominio en el sexo femenino. La patología tiroidea maligna se constituyó en la indicación más frecuente de la cirugía. En estos pacientes, la media de la PTH fue de 11,3 pg/ mL, mientras que los valores de calcio más bajos se presentaron a las 48 horas POP. Solo se visualizaron las paratiroides en cirugía en una tercera parte de los casos y un paciente tuvo una reintervención en las primeras 24 horas; hasta el 18 % tuvieron hipomagnesemia concomitante. Conclusión: la hipocalcemia por hipoparatiroidismo POP es una complicación frecuente después de la cirugía de tiroides, y en un grupo de pacientes será severa o sintomática, razón por la cual requiere uso de calcio parenteral. En consecuencia, esta complicación tendrá que identificarse y tratarse como una emergencia médica para disminuir la morbilidad y la potencial mortalidad asociadas

    Spectro-photometric close pairs in GOODS-S: major and minor companions of intermediate-mass galaxies

    (Abriged) Our goal here is to provide merger frequencies that encompass both major and minor mergers, derived from close pair statistics. We use B-band luminosity- and mass-limited samples from an Spitzer/IRAC-selected catalogue of GOODS-S. We present a new methodology for computing the number of close companions, Nc, when spectroscopic redshift information is partial. We select as close companions those galaxies separated by 6h^-1 kpc < rp < 21h^-1 kpc in the sky plane and with a difference Delta_v <= 500 km s^-1 in redshift space. We provide Nc for four different B-band-selected samples. Nc increases with luminosity, and its evolution with redshift is faster in more luminous samples. We provide Nc of M_star >= 10^10 M_Sun galaxies, finding that the number including minor companions (mass ratio >= 1/10) is roughly two times the number of major companions alone (mass ratio >= 1/3) in the range 0.2 <= z < 1.1. We compare the major merger rate derived by close pairs with the one computed by morphological criteria, finding that both approaches provide similar merger rates for field galaxies when the progenitor bias is taken into account. Finally, we estimate that the total (major+minor) merger rate is ~1.7 times the major merger rate. Only 30% to 50% of the M_star >= 10^10 M_Sun early-type (E/S0/Sa) galaxies that appear z=1 and z=0 may have undergone a major or a minor merger.     On the nature of disks at high redshift seen by JWST/CEERS with contrastive learning and cosmological simulations

    Visual inspections of the first optical rest-frame images from JWST have indicated a surprisingly high fraction of disk galaxies at high redshifts. Here we alternatively apply self-supervised machine learning to explore the morphological diversity at z3z \geq 3. Our proposed data-driven representation scheme of galaxy morphologies, calibrated on mock images from the TNG50 simulation, is shown to be robust to noise and to correlate well with physical properties of the simulated galaxies, including their 3D structure. We apply the method simultaneously to F200W and F356W galaxy images of a mass-complete sample (M/M>109M_*/M_\odot>10^9) at z3z \geq 3 from the first JWST/NIRCam CEERS data release. We find that the simulated and observed galaxies do not populate the same manifold in the representation space from contrastive learning, partly because the observed galaxies tend to be more compact and more elongated than the simulated galaxies. We also find that about half the galaxies that were visually classified as disks based on their elongated images actually populate a similar region of the representation space than spheroids, which according to the TNG50 simulation is occupied by objects with low stellar specific angular momentum and non-oblate structure. This suggests that the disk fraction at z>3z > 3 as evaluated by visual classification may be severely overestimated by misclassifying compact, elongated galaxies as disks. Deeper imaging and/or spectroscopic follow-ups as well as comparisons with other simulations will help to unambiguously determine the true nature of these galaxies.Comment: 25 pages, 23 figures.
