    Climatic and edaphic controls over tropical forest diversity and vegetation carbon storage

    Tropical rainforests harbor exceptionally high biodiversity and store large amounts of carbon in vegetation biomass. However, regional variation in plant species richness and vegetation carbon stock can be substantial, and may be related to the heterogeneity of topoedaphic properties. Therefore, aboveground vegetation carbon storage typically differs between geographic forest regions in association with the locally dominant plant functional group. A better understanding of the underlying factors controlling tropical forest diversity and vegetation carbon storage could be critical for predicting tropical carbon sink strength in response to projected climate change. Based on regionally replicated 1-ha forest inventory plots established in a region of high geomorphological heterogeneity we investigated how climatic and edaphic factors affect tropical forest diversity and vegetation carbon storage. Plant species richness (of all living stems >10 cm in diameter) ranged from 69 to 127 ha-1 and vegetation carbon storage ranged from 114 to 200 t ha-1. While plant species richness was controlled by climate and soil water availability, vegetation carbon storage was strongly related to wood density and soil phosphorus availability. Results suggest that local heterogeneity in resource availability and plant functional composition should be considered to improve projections of tropical forest ecosystem functioning under future scenarios

    À l’heure des robots et du numĂ©rique, la terre (habitat, agriculture, paysage, planĂšte) et la nourriture (du corps et de l’ñme) sont parmi les prĂ©occupations majeures dans les espaces mĂ©diatiques et politiques. Le pĂ©trole et l’abondance qui l’a accompagnĂ© nous avaient fait oublier qu’elles sont au fondement des sociĂ©tĂ©s humaines. La « crise alimentaire » de 2008, qui a secouĂ© plusieurs continents, a rappelĂ© aux gouvernements l’enjeu de la sĂ©curitĂ© alimentaire. AprĂšs des dĂ©cennies d’excĂ©dents, de baisse du prix des produits agricoles de base, la question de la valeur de la terre et de l’agriculture est de retour. La question de la santĂ© et celle des droits humains prennent une place Ă©largie tant dans les politiques publiques et dans la production de normes alimentaires. Des mouvements sociaux transnationaux s’emparent de la question de l’avenir de l’agriculture et de l’alimentation, et de celle de la « bonne vie ». Pour contribuer Ă  cette rĂ©flexion sur l’avenir de la terre et de la nourriture, cet ouvrage Ă©tudie la socialisation de l’agriculture, c’est-Ă -dire sa prise en charge tant par les politiques agricoles (essentiellement nationales) que par l’organisation des marchĂ©s dans un cadre national et international. Il le fait en prenant un large recul et mobilise trois temporalitĂ©s. La premiĂšre est celle de la planĂšte. La seconde, celle des rĂ©gimes mĂ©taboliques, façons dont l’humanitĂ© Ă  diffĂ©rents stades de dĂ©veloppement, mobilise matĂ©riaux et Ă©nergie.     <p>Multidisciplinary study of the Osa and Burica peninsulas, Costa Rica, recognizes the Osa Igneous Complex and the Osa MĂ©lange – records of a complex Late Cretaceous–Miocene tectonic–sedimentary history. The Igneous Complex, an accretionary prism (<em>sensu stricto</em>) comprises mainly basaltic lava flows, with minor sills, gabbroic intrusives, pelagic limestones and radiolarites. Sediments or igneous rocks derived from the upper plate are absent. Four units delimited on the base of stratigraphy and geochemistry lie in contact along reactivated palaeo-dĂ©collement zones. They comprise fragments of a Coniacian–Santonian oceanic plateau (Inner Osa Igneous Complex) and Coniacian–Santonian to Middle Eocene seamounts (Outer Osa Igneous Complex). The units are unrelated to other igneous complexes of Costa Rica and Panama and are exotic with respect to the partly overthickened Caribbean Plate; they formed by multiple accretions between the Late Cretaceous and Middle Eocene, prior to the genesis of the mĂ©lange. Events of high-rate accretion alternated with periods of low-rate accretion and tectonic erosion. The NW Osa MĂ©lange in contact with the Osa Igneous Complex has a block-in-matrix texture at various scales, produced by sedimentary processes and later tectonically enhanced. Lithologies are mainly debris flows and hemipelagic deposits. Clastic components (grains to large boulders) indicate Late Eocene mass wasting of the Igneous Complex, forearc deposits and a volcanic arc. Gravitational accumulation of a thick pile of trench sediments culminated with shallow-level accretion. Mass-wasting along the margin was probably triggered by seamount subduction and/or plate reorganization at larger scale. The study provides new geological constraints for seamount subduction and associated accretionary processes, as well as on the erosive/accretionary nature of convergent margins devoid of accreted sediments. </p

    Paleocene Thalassinidea colonization in deep-sea environment and the coprolite Palaxius osaensis n. ichnosp. in Southern Costa Rica

    Palaxius osaensis n. ichnosp., a new ichnospecies of crustacean coprolite is described. The coprolite is preserved in a 200-m thick Paleocene sequence in Southern Costa Rica that is largely dominated by pillow basalts. The studied sample is part of a seamount formed in the Pacific Ocean that was accreted to the Central American isthmus during the Eocene. The absence of lava vesicles, shallow-water deposits, and detrital sediments in the section suggest that the coprolites were deposited in a deep environment during the first stage of the development of the seamount. This represents one of the deepest occurrences of Thalassinidea coprolites reported in the literature and indicates that the producers of the coprolites, presumably some shrimps, developed the aptitude to colonize abyssal environments at least since Early Tertiary. The crustacean coprolites were encountered at a site which apparently lacked a food supply, although hydrothermal processes are believed to have provided the opportunity for a chemotrophic community to develop on the deepest part of the seamount. P. osaensis n. ichnosp. is also found in Colombia in late Cretaceous shallow-water sediments that notably contain Palaxius caucaensis coprolites (Micropaleontology 41 (1995) 85–88). Occurrences of P. osaensis n. ichnosp. deposited at both shallow and deep levels may possibly be related to an aptitude of some thalassinid organisms to have developed in various biotopes during the late Cretaceous-Paleocene

Autour de cet enjeu qui engage toute l'humanité, Agathe Euzen, Catherine Jeandel et Rémy Mosseri ont réuni prÚs de cent cinquante contributions, visant à apporter un éclairage sur chacun des domaines et des approches que couvre cette thématique.     Predictive Factors and Risk Model for Positive Circumferential Resection Margin Rate after Transanal Total Mesorectal Excision in 2653 Patients with Rectal Cancer

    The aim of this study was to determine the incidence of, and preoperative risk factors for, positive circumferential resection margin (CRM) after transanal total mesorectal excision (TaTME). Background: TaTME has the potential to further reduce the rate of positive CRM for patients with low rectal cancer, thereby improving oncological outcome. Methods: A prospective registry-based study including all cases recorded on the international TaTME registry between July 2014 and January 2018 was performed. Endpoints were the incidence of, and predictive factors for, positive CRM. Univariate and multivariate logistic regressions were performed, and factors for positive CRM were then assessed by formulating a predictive model. Results: In total, 2653 patients undergoing TaTME for rectal cancer were included. The incidence of positive CRM was 107 (4.0%). In multivariate logistic regression analysis, a positive CRM after TaTME was significantly associated with tumors located up to 1 cm from the anorectal junction, anterior tumors, cT4 tumors, extra-mural venous invasion (EMVI), and threatened or involved CRM on baseline MRI (odds ratios 2.09, 1.66, 1.93, 1.94, and 1.72, respectively). The predictive model showed adequate discrimination (area under the receiver-operating characteristic curve &gt;0.70), and predicted a 28% risk of positive CRM if all risk factors were present. Conclusion: Five preoperative tumor-related characteristics had an adverse effect on CRM involvement after TaTME. The predicted risk of positive CRM after TaTME for a specific patient can be calculated preoperatively with the proposed model and may help guide patient selection for optimal treatment and enhance a tailored treatment approach to further optimize oncological outcomes

    Evaluation of a quality improvement intervention to reduce anastomotic leak following right colectomy (EAGLE): pragmatic, batched stepped-wedge, cluster-randomized trial in 64 countries

    Background Anastomotic leak affects 8 per cent of patients after right colectomy with a 10-fold increased risk of postoperative death. The EAGLE study aimed to develop and test whether an international, standardized quality improvement intervention could reduce anastomotic leaks. Methods The internationally intended protocol, iteratively co-developed by a multistage Delphi process, comprised an online educational module introducing risk stratification, an intraoperative checklist, and harmonized surgical techniques. Clusters (hospital teams) were randomized to one of three arms with varied sequences of intervention/data collection by a derived stepped-wedge batch design (at least 18 hospital teams per batch). Patients were blinded to the study allocation. Low- and middle-income country enrolment was encouraged. The primary outcome (assessed by intention to treat) was anastomotic leak rate, and subgroup analyses by module completion (at least 80 per cent of surgeons, high engagement; less than 50 per cent, low engagement) were preplanned. Results A total 355 hospital teams registered, with 332 from 64 countries (39.2 per cent low and middle income) included in the final analysis. The online modules were completed by half of the surgeons (2143 of 4411). The primary analysis included 3039 of the 3268 patients recruited (206 patients had no anastomosis and 23 were lost to follow-up), with anastomotic leaks arising before and after the intervention in 10.1 and 9.6 per cent respectively (adjusted OR 0.87, 95 per cent c.i. 0.59 to 1.30; P = 0.498). The proportion of surgeons completing the educational modules was an influence: the leak rate decreased from 12.2 per cent (61 of 500) before intervention to 5.1 per cent (24 of 473) after intervention in high-engagement centres (adjusted OR 0.36, 0.20 to 0.64; P &lt; 0.001), but this was not observed in low-engagement hospitals (8.3 per cent (59 of 714) and 13.8 per cent (61 of 443) respectively; adjusted OR 2.09, 1.31 to 3.31). Conclusion Completion of globally available digital training by engaged teams can alter anastomotic leak rates. Registration number: NCT04270721 (http://www.clinicaltrials.gov)
