    Get PDF

Observation of inertial energy cascade in interplanetary space plasma

    Get PDF
We show in this article direct evidence for the presence of an inertial energy cascade, the most characteristic signature of hydromagnetic turbulence (MHD), in the solar wind as observed by the Ulysses spacecraft. After a brief rederivation of the equivalent of Yaglom's law for MHD turbulence, we show that a linear relation is indeed observed for the scaling of mixed third order structure functions involving Els\"asser variables. This experimental result, confirming the prescription stemming from a theorem for MHD turbulence, firmly establishes the turbulent character of low-frequency velocity and magnetic field fluctuations in the solar wind plasma

    Get PDF
Relationships between parents and teachers can lead to conflicts and to attitudes of reciprocal defiance. In this situation, practices in co-education involving the school and the family are difficult to implement. This article presents the results of an action-research developed in three primary schools in Charleroi, a city considered as economically disadvantaged. Analysis of the data led to the identification of three main categories of difficulties within the school-family partnership. As well, the authors point out those elements of a common reference that teachers and parents use to agree upon in developing an operational definition of the concept of education.

    Get PDF

Touristic site attractiveness seen through Twitter

Tourism is becoming a significant contributor to medium and long range travels in an increasingly globalized world. Leisure traveling has an important impact on the local and global economy as well as on the environment. The study of touristic trips is thus raising a considerable interest. In this work, we apply a method to assess the attractiveness of 20 of the most popular touristic sites worldwide using geolocated tweets as a proxy for human mobility. We first rank the touristic sites based on the spatial distribution of the visitors’ place of residence. The Taj Mahal, the Pisa Tower and the Eiffel Tower appear consistently in the top 5 in these rankings. We then pass to a coarser scale and classify the travelers by country of residence. Touristic site’s visiting figures are then studied by country of residence showing that the Eiffel Tower, Times Square and the London Tower welcome the majority of the visitors of each country. Finally, we build a network linking sites whenever a user has been detected in more than one site. This allow us to unveil relations between touristic sites and find which ones are more tightly interconnected.Partial financial support has been received from the Spanish Ministry of Economy (MINECO) and FEDER (EU) under project INTENSE@COSYP (FIS2012-30634), and from the EU Commission through project INSIGHT. Improving the integrity and the microstructural features of electron beam welds of a creep-resistant martensitic steel by local (de-)alloying

    Get PDF
Martensitic 9–12% chromium steels present the most preferred material group for high-temperature components in thermal power plants. Previous investigations revealed that due to the use of a creep-resistant martensitic steel strengthened with boron and nitrogen (MarBN), the minimum creep rate can significantly be decreased. Furthermore, the formation of the fine-grained heat-affected zone (FGHAZ) due to welding can be suppressed. This FGHAZ is subject to the most dominant failure mode (type IV cracking) of welded joints during creep exposure. By using electron beam welding, the total width of the heat-affected zone (HAZ) can be reduced compared to conventional arc welding processes. Preceding investigation on electron beam welding of MarBN steel showed recurring difficulties with hot cracking within the fusion zone. Various approaches were tried to produce defect-free welds without the use of any filler metal, but no satisfactory results were achieved. In this investigation, the chemical composition of the fusion zone was modified by the addition of conventional 9% chromium creep-resistant steel as a filler material. By using the filler material, the fusion zone was locally (de-)alloyed and defect-free joints of MarBN steel were produced.publishersversionpublishe

DNA Barcoding for Minor Crops and Food Traceability

    Get PDF
This outlook paper addresses the problem of the traceability of minor crops. These kinds of cultivations consist in a large number of plants locally distributed with a modest production in terms of cultivated acreage and quantity of final product. Because of globalization, the diffusion of minor crops is increasing due to their benefit for human health or their use as food supplements. Such a phenomenon implies a major risk for species substitution or uncontrolled admixture of manufactured plant products with severe consequences for the health of consumers. The need for a reliable identification system is therefore essential to evaluate the quality and provenance of minor agricultural products. DNA-based techniques can help in achieving this mission. In particular, the DNA barcoding approach has gained a role of primary importance thanks to its universality and versatility. Here, we present the advantages in the use of DNA barcoding for the characterization and traceability of minor crops based on our previous or ongoing studies at the ZooPlantLab (Milan, Italy). We also discuss how DNA barcoding may potentially be transferred from the laboratory to the food supply chain, from field to table

Longitudinal changes in anxiety and psychological distress, and associated risk and protective factors during the first three months of the COVID‐19 pandemic in Germany

    Get PDF
Background: The COVID-19 pandemic is related to multiple stressors and therefore may be associated with psychological distress. The aim of this study was to longitudinally assess symptoms of (un-)specific anxiety and depression along different stages of the pandemic to generate knowledge about the progress of psychological consequences of the pandemic and to test the role of potential risk and resilience factors that were derived from cross-sectional studies and official recommendations. Methods: The present study uses a longitudinal observational design with four waves of online data collection (from March 27 to June 15, 2020) in a convenience sample of the general population in Germany. A total of N = 2376 participants that completed at least two waves of the survey were included in the analyses. Findings: Specific COVID-19-related anxiety and the average daily amount of preoccupation with the pandemic decreased continuously over the four waves. Unspecific worrying and depressive symptoms decreased on average but not on median level. Self-efficacy, normalization, maintaining social contacts, and knowledge, where to get medical support, were associated with fewer symptoms relative to baseline. Suppression, unhealthy habits, and a longer average daily time of thinking about the pandemic were correlated with a relative increase of symptoms. Interpretation: Our findings provide insight into the longitudinal changes of symptoms of psychological distress along the first three months of the COVID-19 pandemic in Germany. Furthermore, we were able to reaffirm the anticipated protective and risk factors that were extracted from previous studies and recommendations

Oxidative stability of baby dehydrated purees formulated with different oils and germinated grain flours of quinoa and amaranth

    Get PDF
Fat oxidative stability (OS) is an important food parameter because it causes sensory deterioration and rejection. The aim of this work was to evaluate the OS of the lipid fraction of baby dehydrated purees. Purees (6) were formulated with Andean potato, pumpkin, non-germinated and germinated quinoa and amaranth flours, and different oils: soybean-sunflower (SSO), canola (CO) and sunflower-chia (SChO). Purees were dehydrated by forced air circulation oven. The fat from the purees and the grain flours was extracted by Soxhlet method. Lipid profile, tocopherol contents and OS were analyzed in oils and lipid fractions. Changes of free fatty acids (FFA) during germination were studied. Tertiary-butyl hydroquinone (TBHQ) was determined in the oils used in formulations. During germination, FFA increased in both grains; tocopherols decreased in quinoa and increased in amaranth. Purees with germinated grain flours had lower OS than those made with non-germinated grain flours. SSO had the best OS due to the high content of TBHQ. However, purees made with SSO had OS like those formulated with CO. Purees with SChO had the lowest OS due to its great ω3 content and low antioxidant contents. Germinated grain flours and CO were the best ingredients to formulate baby purees.Fil: Jimenez, María Dolores. Universidad Nacional de Jujuy.
