    Concepts in ichnotaxonomy illustrated by small round holes in shells

    La clasificación de las pistas fósiles requiere un doble sistema de nomenclatura. El nombre de la pista fósil (ichnotaxon) está basado en la morfologia de la estructura, mientras que el taxon biológico  representa la posicion filogenética que se interpreta del organismo causante. Los dos sistemas de nomenclatura no se pueden intercambiar, y ambos son necesarios para la completa clasificacion dela pista. A muchas de estas pistas no les ha sido aún atribuido unichnotaxon descriptivo, pero ya que las  pistas fósiles re quieren nombres si han de ser tratadas sistemáticamente, se ofrece comunmente en tales  casos un biotaxon interpretativo en lugar del ichnotaxon que no se ha descritotodavia Este procedimiento tiende a desviar la atención de la verdadera naturaleza de la pista fósil e implica una falsa  exactitud en la determinación filogenética, lo cual conduce a conclusiones paleobiologicas poco seguras. Estos puntos quedan bien ilustrados por el ejemplo de unas perforaciones pequeíias y redondas sobre  conchas. Son pistas fósiles abundantes y, no teniendo ichnotaxon, tienden a ser relacionadas con la  accion perforante de los gasteropedos-naticidos y muricidos-sobre conchas. Sin embargo, varios grupos  más de gasteropodos producen perforaciones redondas, al igual que los cefalopodos octopodos,  turbelarios, nemátodos y braquiópodos articulados, pero su acción es poco conocida. Antes de embarcarse en tales especulaciones, como son los organismos causantes, es necesario un ichnotaxón para atraer la atención hacia estas pistas fosiles y aumentarel rigorde su tratamiento. Sólo cuando sumorfologia y distribución sean mejor conocidas estaremos en una posición mejor para discutir sus  atribuciones filogenéticas

    Natural History of the Gyrfalcon in the Central Canadian Arctic

    A population of breeding gyrfalcons was studied from 1982 to 1986 on a 2000 sq km area in the central Arctic of the Northwest Territories. Each year 14-18 territories were occupied. The mean internest distance was 10.6 km, giving one of the highest recorded densities for the species. There was a tendency for regularity in spacing of territories. Most (85%) nests were in abandoned stick nests of common ravens or golden eagles. Rough-legged hawk nests were not used by gyrfalcons, despite numerous available. Mean date of initiation of laying was 8 May. Mean size of clutch was 3.80 and of brood was 2.53, and mean productivity was 1.50 fledged young. A reduction of 48% from estimated number of eggs laid to number of fledglings was determined.     Bioerosion of Lower Ordovician Hardgrounds in Southern Scandinavia and Western North America

    Trace fossils produced by macroboring invertebrates can be found in carbonate hardgrounds of early Ordovician age in southern Sweden, southern Norway and western Utah (U.S.A.). The bioeroded rocks are highly fossiliferous, thinly bedded, shallow-marine limestones. The macroborings in each of the three localities are vase-shaped cavities with diameters and lengths ranging from one to a few centimeters. At least some of the Swedish specimens apparently belong to the ichnogenus Gastrochaenolites LEYMERIE. These bioerosion trace fossils appear to be the oldest macroborings in carbonate hardgrounds, and they indicate that the macroboring niche was firmly established in shallow-marine carbonate shelf environments at least by Arenig time in the Ordovician Period

    Stability and deformation of oil droplets during microfiltration on a slotted pore membrane

A mathematical model was developed in order to predict conditions for 100% cut-off of oil droplets through the membrane as a function of permeate flux rate. Good agreement of theoretical predictions with experimental data shows that the model can be applied to the filtration of deformable droplets through slotted pore membranes. At high interfacial tension (40 mN/m) with lower flux (200 l m−2 hr−1)droplets of crude oil (27 API) were 100% rejected at droplet diameter 4.3 μm using a 4 μm slotted pore membrane. At lower interfacial tension (5 mN/m), with the same flux rate, 100% rejection occurred at 10 μm droplet diameter using the same membrane. It was also found that the droplet rejection efficiency below the 100% cut-off was roughly linear with drop size, down to zero rejection at zero drop diameter. Hence, the model, coupled with this approximate correlation, can be used to predict dispersed oil drop concentration from a known feed drop size distribution

    Palaeoenvironment of Eocene prodelta in Spitsbergen recorded by the trace fossil Phycosiphon incertum

    Ichnological, sedimentological and geochemical analyses were conducted on the Eocene Frysjaodden Formation in order to interpret palaeoenvironment prodelta sediments in the Central Basin of Spitsbergen. Phycosiphon incertum is the exclusive ichnotaxon showing differences in size, distribution, abundance and density, and relation to laminated/bioturbated intervals. Large P. incertum mainly occur dispersed, isolated and randomly distributed throughout the weakly laminated/non-laminated intervals. Small P. incertum occur occasionally in patches of several burrows within laminated intervals or as densely packed burrows in thin horizons in laminated intervals or constituting fully bioturbated intervals that are several centimetres thick. Ichnological changes are mainly controlled by oxygenation, although the availability of benthic food cannot be discarded.     Shear enhanced microfiltration and rejection of crude oil drops through a slotted pore membrane including migration velocities

Applying vibration provides shear rate at the membrane surface leading to shear-induced migration and an inertial lift of drops/particles. Both phenomena tend to move the droplets away from the membrane surface. The shear-induced migration and inertial lift increase with increasing of the shear rate. A mathematical model is presented to account for the presence of both phenomena. The developed model is used for theoretical prediction of 100% cut-off of crude oil droplets by the membrane with, and with-out, vibration applied. A satisfactory agreement of the model predictions with experimental data shows that the model can be successfully used for a theoretical prediction of 100% cut-off of droplets by slotted pore membranes. Rejection of droplets increased with applying shear rate: at 8000 s-1 shear rate and 200 l m-2 hr-1 flux rate 3 to 4 μm radius droplets were almost completely rejected reducing 400 ppm of crude in the feed to 7 ppm in the permeate

    D* Production in Deep Inelastic Scattering at HERA

    This paper presents measurements of D^{*\pm} production in deep inelastic scattering from collisions between 27.5 GeV positrons and 820 GeV protons. The data have been taken with the ZEUS detector at HERA. The decay channel D+(D0Kπ+)π+D^{*+}\to (D^0 \to K^- \pi^+) \pi^+ (+ c.c.) has been used in the study. The e+pe^+p cross section for inclusive D^{*\pm} production with 5<Q2<100GeV25<Q^2<100 GeV^2 and y<0.7y<0.7 is 5.3 \pms 1.0 \pms 0.8 nb in the kinematic region {1.3<pT(D±)<9.01.3<p_T(D^{*\pm})<9.0 GeV and η(D±)<1.5| \eta(D^{*\pm}) |<1.5}. Differential cross sections as functions of p_T(D^{*\pm}), η(D±),W\eta(D^{*\pm}), W and Q2Q^2 are compared with next-to-leading order QCD calculations based on the photon-gluon fusion production mechanism. After an extrapolation of the cross section to the full kinematic region in p_T(D^{*\pm}) and η\eta(D^{*\pm}), the charm contribution F2ccˉ(x,Q2)F_2^{c\bar{c}}(x,Q^2) to the proton structure function is determined for Bjorken xx between 2 \cdot 104^{-4} and 5 \cdot 103^{-3}.Comment: 17 pages including 4 figure

    PI16 is expressed by a subset of human memory Treg with enhanced migration to CCL17 and CCL20

    The peptidase inhibitor PI16 was shown previously by microarray analysis to be over-expressed by CD4-positive/CD25-positive Treg compared with CD4-positive/CD25-negative Th cells. Using a monoclonal antibody to the human PI16 protein, we found that PI16-positive Treg have a memory (CD45RO-positive) phenotype and express higher levels of FOXP3 than PI16-negative Treg. PI16-positive Treg are functional in suppressor assays in vitro with potency similar to PI16-negative Treg. Further phenotyping of the PI16-positive Treg revealed that the chemokine receptors CCR4 and CCR6 are expressed by more of the PI16-positive/CD45RO-positive Treg compared with PI16-negative/CD45RO-positive Treg or Th cells. PI16-positive Treg showed enhanced in vitro migration towards the inflammatory chemokines CCL17 and CCL20, suggesting they can migrate to sites of inflammation. We conclude that PI16 identifies a novel distinct subset of functional memory Treg which can migrate to sites of inflammation and regulate the pro-inflammatory response at those sites.Ian C.     Observation of Events with an Energetic Forward Neutron in Deep Inelastic Scattering at HERA

    In deep inelastic neutral current scattering of positrons and protons at the center of mass energy of 300 GeV, we observe, with the ZEUS detector, events with a high energy neutron produced at very small scattering angles with respect to the proton direction. The events constitute a fixed fraction of the deep inelastic, neutral current event sample independent of Bjorken x and Q2 in the range 3 · 10-4 \u3c xBJ \u3c 6 · 10-3 and 10 \u3c Q2 \u3c 100 GeV2
