    Chemical sourcing of prehistoric ceramics from Mesoamerica

    Abstract only availableFor over 3000 years the Basin of Mexico has been a cultural core of Mesoamerica—the location of Teotihuacán, the Aztec capital, and modern Mexico City. Despite the region's enduring prominence, little is known about early interactions between its different cultures. This project investigates ceramic exchange in the Basin of Mexico during the Formative Period (1200-500 BC) by chemically sourcing ceramics from four sites in the northeastern corridor, the Teotihuacán Valley. Instrument Neutron Activation Analysis (INAA) was used to determine the elemental compositions of 105 pottery sherds. The concentrations of 33 elements were detected and ceramics were grouped according to elemental compositions. When the differences between groups were greater than differences within groups, the pottery within a group was assumed to have the same provenance.     GRACE satellite monitoring of large depletion in water storage in response to the 2011 drought in Texas

    International audienceTexas experienced the most extreme one-year drought on record in 2011 with precipitation at 40% of long-term mean and agricultural losses of ~$7.6 billion. We assess the value of Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) satellite-derived total water storage (TWS) change as an alternative remote sensing-based drought indicator, independent of traditional drought indicators based on in situ monitoring. GRACE shows depletion in TWS of 62.3 ± 17.7 km3 during the 2011 drought. Large uncertainties in simulated soil moisture storage depletion (14-83 km3) from six land surface models indicate that GRACE TWS is a more reliable drought indicator than disaggregated soil moisture or groundwater storage. Groundwater use and groundwater level data indicate that depletion is dominated by changes in soil moisture storage, consistent with high correlation between GRACE TWS and the Palmer Drought Severity Index. GRACE provides a valuable tool for monitoring statewide water storage depletion, linking meteorological and hydrological droughts

    Finding qualitative research: an evaluation of search strategies

    BACKGROUND: Qualitative research makes an important contribution to our understanding of health and healthcare. However, qualitative evidence can be difficult to search for and identify, and the effectiveness of different types of search strategies is unknown. METHODS: Three search strategies for qualitative research in the example area of support for breast-feeding were evaluated using six electronic bibliographic databases. The strategies were based on using thesaurus terms, free-text terms and broad-based terms. These strategies were combined with recognised search terms for support for breast-feeding previously used in a Cochrane review. For each strategy, we evaluated the recall (potentially relevant records found) and precision (actually relevant records found). RESULTS: A total yield of 7420 potentially relevant records was retrieved by the three strategies combined. Of these, 262 were judged relevant. Using one strategy alone would miss relevant records. The broad-based strategy had the highest recall and the thesaurus strategy the highest precision. Precision was generally poor: 96% of records initially identified as potentially relevant were deemed irrelevant. Searching for qualitative research involves trade-offs between recall and precision. CONCLUSIONS: These findings confirm that strategies that attempt to maximise the number of potentially relevant records found are likely to result in a large number of false positives. The findings also suggest that a range of search terms is required to optimise searching for qualitative evidence. This underlines the problems of current methods for indexing qualitative research in bibliographic databases and indicates where improvements need to be made

    Baryon acoustic oscillations reconstruction using convolutional neural networks

    We propose a new scheme to reconstruct the baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO) signal, which contains key cosmological information, based on deep convolutional neural networks (CNN). Trained with almost no fine tuning, the network can recover large-scale modes accurately in the test set: the correlation coefficient between the true and reconstructed initial conditions reaches 90% at k ≀ 0.2 hMpc−1, which can lead to significant improvements of the BAO signal-to-noise ratio down to k ≃ 0.4 hMpc−1. Since this new scheme is based on the configuration-space density field in sub-boxes, it is local and less affected by survey boundaries than the standard reconstruction method, as our tests confirm. We find that the network trained in one cosmology is able to reconstruct BAO peaks in the others, i.e. recovering information lost to non-linearity independent of cosmology. The accuracy of recovered BAO peak positions is far less than that caused by the difference in the cosmology models for training and testing, suggesting that different models can be distinguished efficiently in our scheme. It is very promising that Our scheme provides a different new way to extract the cosmological information from the ongoing and future large galaxy surveys
