The classification of irreducible admissible mod p representations of a p-adic GL_n
Let F be a finite extension of Q_p. Using the mod p Satake transform, we
define what it means for an irreducible admissible smooth representation of an
F-split p-adic reductive group over \bar F_p to be supersingular. We then give
the classification of irreducible admissible smooth GL_n(F)-representations
over \bar F_p in terms of supersingular representations. As a consequence we
deduce that supersingular is the same as supercuspidal. These results
generalise the work of Barthel-Livne for n = 2. For general split reductive
groups we obtain similar results under stronger hypotheses.Comment: 55 pages, to appear in Inventiones Mathematica
Elliptic curves of large rank and small conductor
For r=6,7,...,11 we find an elliptic curve E/Q of rank at least r and the
smallest conductor known, improving on the previous records by factors ranging
from 1.0136 (for r=6) to over 100 (for r=10 and r=11). We describe our search
methods, and tabulate, for each r=5,6,...,11, the five curves of lowest
conductor, and (except for r=11) also the five of lowest absolute discriminant,
that we found.Comment: 16 pages, including tables and one .eps figure; to appear in the

On a Conjecture of Rapoport and Zink
In their book Rapoport and Zink constructed rigid analytic period spaces
for Fontaine's filtered isocrystals, and period morphisms from PEL
moduli spaces of -divisible groups to some of these period spaces. They
conjectured the existence of an \'etale bijective morphism of
rigid analytic spaces and of a universal local system of -vector spaces on
. For Hodge-Tate weights and we construct in this article an
intrinsic Berkovich open subspace of and the universal local
system on . We conjecture that the rigid-analytic space associated with
is the maximal possible , and that is connected. We give
evidence for these conjectures and we show that for those period spaces
possessing PEL period morphisms, equals the image of the period morphism.
Then our local system is the rational Tate module of the universal
-divisible group and enjoys additional functoriality properties. We show
that only in exceptional cases equals all of and when the
Shimura group is we determine all these cases.Comment: v2: 48 pages; many new results added, v3: final version that will

Landuse and soil degradation in the southern Maya lowlands, from Pre-Classic to Post-Classic times : The case of La Joyanca (Petén, Guatemala)
International audienceThis work focuses on the impact of Maya agriculture on soil degradation. In site and out site studies in the area of the city of La Joyanca (NW Petén) show that "Maya clays" do not constitute a homogeneous unit, but represent a complex sedimentary record. A high resolution analysis leads us to document changes in rates and practices evolving in time in relation with major socio-political and economic changes. It is possible to highlight extensive agricultural practices between Early Pre-classical to Late Pre-classical times. Intensification occurs in relation with reduction of the fallow duration during Pre-classic to Classic periods. The consequences of these changes on soil erosion are discussed. However, it does not seem that the agronomic potential of the soils was significantly degraded before the end of the Classic period
Poly-β-hydroxybutyrate administration during early life: effects on performance, immunity and microbial community of European sea bass yolk-sac larvae
The reliable production of marine fish larvae is one of the major bottlenecks in aquaculture due to high mortalities mainly caused by infectious diseases. To evaluate if the compound poly-β-hydroxybutyrate (PHB) might be a suitable immunoprophylactic measure in fish larviculture, its capacity to improve immunity and performance in European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) yolk-sac larvae was explored. PHB was applied from mouth opening onwards to stimulate the developing larval immune system at the earliest possible point in time. Larval survival, growth, microbiota composition, gene expression profiles and disease resistance were assessed. PHB administration improved larval survival and, furthermore, altered the larva-associated microbiota composition. The bacterial challenge test using pathogenic Vibrio anguillarum revealed that the larval disease resistance was not influenced by PHB. The expression profiles of 26 genes involved e.g. in the immune response showed that PHB affected the expression of the antimicrobial peptides ferritin (fer) and dicentracin (dic), however, the response to PHB was inconsistent and weaker than previously demonstrated for sea bass post-larvae. Hence, the present study highlights the need for more research focusing on the immunostimulation of different early developmental stages for gaining a more comprehensive picture and advancing a sustainable production of high quality fry
Oral bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaws in rheumatoid arthritis patients: a critical discussion and two case reports

Abstract

Background

Bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (BRONJ) is a clinical condition characterized by the presence of exposed bone in the maxillofacial region. Its pathogenesis is still undetermined, but may be associated with risk factors such as rheumatoid arthritis (RA). The aim of this paper is to report two unpublished cases of BRONJ in patients with RA and to conduct a literature review of similar clinical cases with a view to describe the main issues concerning these patients, including demographic characteristics and therapeutic approaches applied.

Methods

Two case reports of BRONJ involving RA patients were discussed

Results

Both patients were aging female taking alendronate for more than 3 years. Lesions were detected in stage II in posterior mandible with no clear trigger agent. The treatment applied consisted of antibiotics, oral rinses with chlorhexidine, drug discontinuation and surgical procedures. Complete healing of the lesions was achieved.

Conclusions

This paper brings to light the necessity for rheumatologists to be aware of the potential risk to their patients of developing BRONJ and to work together with dentists for the prevention and early detection of the lesions. Although some features seem to link RA with oral BRONJ and act as synergistic effects, more studies should be developed to support the scientific bases for this hypothesis.</p
Solution Behavior and Activity of a Halophilic Esterase under High Salt Concentration
Background: Halophiles are extremophiles that thrive in environments with very high concentrations of salt. Although the salt reliance and physiology of these extremophiles have been widely investigated, the molecular working mechanisms of their enzymes under salty conditions have been little explored. Methodology/Principal Findings: A halophilic esterolytic enzyme LipC derived from archeaon Haloarcula marismortui was overexpressed from Escherichia coli BL21. The purified enzyme showed a range of hydrolytic activity towards the substrates of p-nitrophenyl esters with different alkyl chains (n = 2−16), with the highest activity being observed for p-nitrophenyl acetate, consistent with the basic character of an esterase. The optimal esterase activities were found to be at pH 9.5 and [NaCl] = 3.4 M or [KCl] = 3.0 M and at around 45°C. Interestingly, the hydrolysis activity showed a clear reversibility against changes in salt concentration. At the ambient temperature of 22°C, enzyme systems working under the optimal salt concentrations were very stable against time. Increase in temperature increased the activity but reduced its stability. Circular dichroism (CD), dynamic light scattering (DLS) and small angle neutron scattering (SANS) were deployed to determine the physical states of LipC in solution. As the salt concentration increased, DLS revealed substantial increase in aggregate sizes, but CD measurements revealed the maximal retention of the α-helical structure at the salt concentration matching the optimal activity. These observations were supported by SANS analysis that revealed the highest proportion of unimers and dimers around the optimal salt concentration, although the coexistent larger aggregates showed a trend of increasing size with salt concentration, consistent with the DLS data. Conclusions/Significance: The solution α-helical structure and activity relation also matched the highest proportion of enzyme unimers and dimers. Given that all the solutions studied were structurally inhomogeneous, it is important for future work to understand how the LipC's solution aggregation affected its activity
