    In dit rapport worden trends en referentiewaarden gepresenteerd voor het voorkomen van een selectie van kenmerkende vogelsoorten in een aantal Natura 2000-gebieden aan de Nederlandse kust. Het betreft de Waddenzee (totaal en delen daarvan), Noordzeekustzone, Voordelta, Oosterschelde, Westerschelde, Grevelingen, evenals het totaal over de laatste drie gebieden. De gegevens worden apart gepresenteerd voor broedvogels en voor niet-broedvogels (wintervogels, watervogels). Het betreft grotendeels soorten waarvoor instandhoudingsdoelstellingen zijn geformuleerd voor Ă©Ă©n of meer Natura 2000-gebieden. De informatie bestaat uit aantallen en trends over een zo lang mogelijke periode (veelal vanaf medio jaren zeventig), een toelichting daarop, en onderbouwde referentiewaarden.     The Dynamics of Multi-Scalar Field Cosmological Models and Assisted Inflation

    We investigate the dynamical properties of a class of spatially homogeneous and isotropic cosmological models containing a barotropic perfect fluid and multiple scalar fields with independent exponential potentials. We show that the assisted inflationary scaling solution is the global late-time attractor for the parameter values for which the model is inflationary, even when curvature and barotropic matter are included. For all other parameter values the multi-field curvature scaling solution is the global late-time attractor (in these solutions asymptotically the curvature is not dynamically negligible). Consequently, we find that in general all of the scalar fields in multi-field models with exponential potentials are non-negligible in late-time behaviour, contrary to what is commonly believed. The early-time and intermediate behaviour of the models is also studied. In particular, n-scalar field models are investigated and the structure of the saddle equilibrium points corresponding to inflationary m-field scaling solutions and non-inflationary m-field matter scaling solutions are also studied (where m<n), leading to interesting transient dynamical behaviour with new physical scenarios of potential importance.Comment: 27 pages, uses REVTeX Added an appendix illustrating some of the details needed to compute the stability of the assisted inflationary solutio

    Experimental Study of Dispersion and Modulational Instability of Surface Gravity Waves on Constant Vorticity Currents

    This paper examines experimentally the dispersion and stability of weakly nonlinear waves on opposing linearly vertically sheared current profiles (with constant vorticity). Measurements are compared against predictions from the unidirectional (1D + 1) constant vorticity nonlinear Schrödinger equation (the vor-NLSE) derived by Thomas et al. (Phys. Fluids, vol. 24, no. 12, 2012, 127102). The shear rate is negative in opposing currents when the magnitude of the current in the laboratory reference frame is negative (i.e. opposing the direction of wave propagation) and reduces with depth, as is most commonly encountered in nature. Compared to a uniform current with the same surface velocity, negative shear has the effect of increasing wavelength and enhancing stability. In experiments with a regular low-steepness wave, the dispersion relationship between wavelength and frequency is examined on five opposing current profiles with shear rates from 0 to −0.87 s−1. For all current profiles, the linear constant vorticity dispersion relation predicts the wavenumber to within the 95 % confidence bounds associated with estimates of shear rate and surface current velocity. The effect of shear on modulational instability was determined by the spectral evolution of a carrier wave seeded with spectral sidebands on opposing current profiles with shear rates between 0 and −0.48 s−1. Numerical solutions of the vor-NLSE are consistently found to predict sideband growth to within two standard deviations across repeated experiments, performing considerably better than its uniform-current NLSE counterpart. Similarly, the amplification of experimental wave envelopes is predicted well by numerical solutions of the vor-NLSE, and significantly over-predicted by the uniform-current NLSE

    Weak lensing mass reconstructions of the ESO Distant Cluster Survey

    We present weak lensing mass reconstructions for the 20 high-redshift clusters i n the ESO Distant Cluster Survey. The weak lensing analysis was performed on deep, 3-color optical images taken with VLT/FORS2, using a composite galaxy catalog with separate shape estimators measured in each passband. We find that the EDisCS sample is composed primarily of clusters that are less massive than t hose in current X-ray selected samples at similar redshifts, but that all of the fields are likely to contain massive clusters rather than superpositions of low mass groups. We find that 7 of the 20 fields have additional massive structures which are not associated with the clusters and which can affect the weak lensing mass determination. We compare the mass measurements of the remaining 13 clusters with luminosity measurements from cluster galaxies selected using photometric redshifts and find evidence of a dependence of the cluster mass-to-light ratio with redshift. Finally we determine the noise level in the shear measurements for the fields as a function of exposure time and seeing and demonstrate that future ground-based surveys which plan to perform deep optical imaging for use in weak lensing measurements must achieve point-spread functions smaller than a median of 0.6" FWHM.Comment: 35 pages, 24 figures, accepted to A&A, a version with better figure resolution can be found at http://www.mpa-garching.mpg.de/ediscs/papers.htm

    The set-down and set-up of directionally spread and crossing surface gravity wave groups

    For sufficiently directionally spread surface gravity wave groups, the set-down of the wave-averaged free surface, first described by Longuet-Higgins and Stewart (J. Fluid Mech. vol. 13, 1962, pp. 481–504), can turn into a set-up. Using a multiple-scale expansion for two crossing wave groups, we examine the structure and magnitude of this wave-averaged set-up, which is part of a crossing wave pattern that behaves as a modulated partial standing wave: in space, it consists of a rapidly varying standing-wave pattern slowly modulated by the product of the envelopes of the two groups; in time, it grows and decays on the slow time scale associated with the translation of the groups. Whether this crossing wave pattern actually enhances the surface elevation at the point of focus depends on the phases of the linear wave groups, unlike the set-down, which is always negative and inherits the spatial structure of the underlying envelope(s). We present detailed laboratory measurements of the wave-averaged free surface, examining both single wave groups, varying the degree of spreading from small to very large, and the interaction between two wave groups, varying both the degree of spreading and the crossing angle between the groups. In both cases, we find good agreement between the experiments, our simple expressions for the set-down and set-up, and existing second-order theory based on the component-by-component interaction of individual waves with different frequencies and directions. We predict and observe a set-up for wave groups with a Gaussian angular amplitude distribution with standard deviations of above (for energy spectra), which is relatively large for realistic sea states, and for crossing sea states with angles of separation of and above, which are known to occur in the ocean

    Trends in sexually transmitted infections in the Netherlands, combining surveillance data from general practices and sexually transmitted infection centers

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Sexually transmitted infections (STI) care in the Netherlands is primarily provided by general practitioners (GPs) and specialized STI centers. STI surveillance is based on data from STI centers, which show increasing numbers of clients. Data from a GP morbidity surveillance network were used to investigate the distribution in the provision of STI care and the usefulness of GP data in surveillance.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Data on STI-related episodes and STI diagnoses based on ICPC codes and, for chlamydia, prescriptions, were obtained from GP electronic medical records (EMRs) of the GP network and compared to data from STI centers from 2002 to 2007. Incidence rates were estimated for the total population in the Netherlands.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The incidence of STI-consultations and -diagnoses increased substantially in recent years, both at GPs and STI centers. The increase in consultations was larger than the increase in diagnoses; Chlamydia incidence rose especially at STI centers. GPs were responsible for 70% of STI-related episodes and 80-85% of STI diagnoses. STI centers attract relatively younger and more often male STI-patients than GPs. Symptomatic STIs like <it>Herpes genitalis </it>and genital warts were more frequently diagnosed at GPs and chlamydia, gonorrhea and syphilis at STI centers.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>GPs fulfill an important role in STI care, complementary to STI centers. Case definitions of STI could be improved, particularly by including laboratory results in EMRs. The contribution of primary care is often overlooked in STI health care. Including estimates from GP EMRs can improve the surveillance of STIs.</p

    Hydrodynamic X Waves

    Stationary wave groups exist in a range of nonlinear dispersive media, including optics, Bose-Einstein condensates, plasma, and hydrodynamics. We report experimental observations of nonlinear surface gravity X waves, i.e., X -shaped wave envelopes that propagate over long distances with constant form. These can be described by the 2 D + 1 nonlinear Schrödinger equation, which predicts a balance between dispersion and diffraction when the envelope (the arms of the X ) travel at ± arctan ( 1 / √ 2 ) ≈ ± 35.2 6 ° to the carrier wave. Our findings may help improve understanding the lifetime of extremes in directional seas and motivate further studies in other nonlinear dispersive media

    The physical oceanography of the transport of floating marine debris

    Marine plastic debris floating on the ocean surface is a major environmental problem. However, its distribution in the ocean is poorly mapped, and most of the plastic waste estimated to have entered the ocean from land is unaccounted for. Better understanding of how plastic debris is transported from coastal and marine sources is crucial to quantify and close the global inventory of marine plastics, which in turn represents critical information for mitigation or policy strategies. At the same time, plastic is a unique tracer that provides an opportunity to learn more about the physics and dynamics of our ocean across multiple scales, from the Ekman convergence in basin-scale gyres to individual waves in the surfzone. In this review, we comprehensively discuss what is known about the different processes that govern the transport of floating marine plastic debris in both the open ocean and the coastal zones, based on the published literature and referring to insights from neighbouring fields such as oil spill dispersion, marine safety recovery, plankton connectivity, and others. We discuss how measurements of marine plastics (both in situ and in the laboratory), remote sensing, and numerical simulations can elucidate these processes and their interactions across spatio-temporal scales

    Remifentanil patient controlled analgesia versus epidural analgesia in labour. A multicentre randomized controlled trial

    Background Pain relief during labour is a topic of major interest in the Netherlands. Epidural analgesia is considered to be the most effective method of pain relief and recommended as first choice. However its uptake by pregnant women is limited compared to other western countries, partly as a result of non-availability due to logistic problems. Remifentanil, a synthetic opioid, is very suitable for patient controlled analgesia. Recent studies show that epidural analgesia is superior to remifentanil patient controlled analgesia in terms of pain intensity score; however there was no difference in satisfaction with pain relief between both treatments. Methods/design The proposed study is a multicentre randomized controlled study that assesses the cost-effectiveness of remifentanil patient controlled analgesia compared to epidural analgesia. We hypothesize that remifentanil patient controlled analgesia is as effective in improving pain appreciation scores as epidural analgesia, with lower costs and easier achievement of 24 hours availability of pain relief for women in labour and efficient pain relief for those with a contraindication for epidural analgesia. Eligible women will be informed about the study and randomized before active labour has started. Women will be randomly allocated to a strategy based on epidural analgesia or on remifentanil patient controlled analgesia when they request pain relief during labour. Primary outcome is the pain appreciation score, i.e. satisfaction with pain relief. Secondary outcome parameters are costs, patient satisfaction, pain scores (pain-intensity), mode of delivery and maternal and neonatal side effects. The economic analysis will be performed from a short-term healthcare perspective. For both strategies the cost of perinatal care for mother and child, starting at the onset of labour and ending ten days after delivery, will be registered and compared.
