Small, programmable, high speed PCM subsystem, supports the variety of signals inherent in sophisticated equipment. A signal generated by a transducer is first conditioned to the proper signal range, then sampled by an external multiplexer or by the subsystem directly and then converted and transmitted to a receiving station

Synergic activity of Cel8Pa ÎČ-1,4 endoglucanase and Bg1Pa ÎČ-glucosidase from Paenibacillus xylanivorans A59 in beta-glucan conversion

In the efficient bioconversion of polysaccharides from lignocellulosic biomass, endoglucanases and ÎČ-glucosidases are key enzymes for the deconstruction of ÎČ-glucans. In this work, we focused on a GH8 endoglucanase (Cel8Pa) and a GH1 ÎČ-glucosidase (Bg1Pa) from Paenibacillus xylanivorans A59. Cel8Pa was active on a broad range of substrates, such as ÎČ-glucan from barley (24.5 IU/mg), lichenan (17.9 IU/mg), phosphoric acid swollen cellulose (PASC) (9.7 IU/mg), carboxi-methylcellulose (CMC) (7.3 IU/mg), chitosan (1.4 IU/mg) and xylan (0.4 IU/mg). Bg1Pa was active on cellobiose (C2) and cello-oligosaccharides up to C6, releasing glucose as the main product. When both enzymes were used jointly, there was a synergic effect in the conversion rate of polysaccharides to glucose. Cel8Pa and Bg1Pa presented important properties for simultaneous saccharification and fermentation (SSF) processes in second generation bioethanol production, such as tolerance to high concentration of glucose and ethanol.Fil: Ghio, Silvina. The Rise of the Competitiveness Discourse- A Neo-Gramscian Analysis. Bruges Political Research Paper No. 19, December 2009

    Get PDF
This article focuses on the development of the 'competitiveness discourse' as an element of a hegemonic strategy on the part of an emerging historic bloc of social forces supporting an embedded neoliberal project for European integration. In the framework of a neo-Gramscian understanding of political processes, the rise of neoliberalism in Europe is viewed as the outcome of a material and ideological struggle over the social purpose of EU integration. The discursive construction of an ambiguous concept such as that of the European social model has gone hand in hand with the implementation of largely neoliberal reforms - such as the internal market and EMU - while preserving the traditional European social consensual model. The current legitimacy crisis the EU is arguably experiencing is viewed as the outcome of the relative failure of this hegemonic project to generate consensus, as it further promotes a disembedding of the economy

Democracy in Europe: a tale of two crises

This article addresses the issue of the relationship between 'the market' and democracy in the European Union from a critical political economy perspective. It argues that the way the European Union institutions and national governments are attempting to solve the current economic and financial problems of the Eurozone enhances the trend towards 'new constitutionalist' arrangement that were already present. A detailed analysis of the reforms is proposed, as well as an historical perspective on the relationship between 'the market' and democracy that has characterised Western political economies. The recent reforms of EU economic governance are thus seen as furthering the insulation of socio-economic policy-making from public's electoral accountability

Common sense and 'national emergency': neoliberal hegemony in 1990s Italy

The object of this analysis is the moment of consensus that was achieved in the Italian political economy in the 1990s, which allowed the Ă©lite to implement 'neoliberal' reforms of industrial relations, pensions, labour market, as well as austerity measures. In contrast to previous work on these issues, I apply a neo-Gramscian theoretical approach that is able to overcome the limitations of an institutionalist paradigm without at the same time taking refuge in a form of determinism. The notion of 'common sense' is fruitfully applied to the Italian case: through a 'common sense' analysis of interviews with representatives of social forces and parties, I show that the genesis of consensus can be both described and explained. A second - related - aim of the research is to explore the '"common sense' underpinnings of the Left's ideological transformation in 1990s Italy. The main finding of the research is that the shared 'common sense' assumption among the social actors was that Italy suffers from economic vulnerability and thus unilateral sacrifices (including - crucially - wage moderation) on the part of labour are necessary in order to adapt the national political economy to 'the international'

Acute hepatitis E virus infection in a migrant population in North East Italy : A retrospective analysis

    No full text
Objective To study the epidemiological and clinical features of Hepatitis E Virus (HEV) infection in a migrant population. Methods We performed a retrospective chart review, identifying a cohort of 21 symptomatic patients of migrant origin with confirmed HEV infection admitted in the period between January 1995 - November 2014. Results 20 (95%) patients came from South Asian countries highly endemic for HEV, all positive for HEV genotype 1. Recent travel to a highly endemic country was the most consistent risk factor identified in 90% of cases, duration from return to Italy to hospitalisation ranged from 10 to120 days. Nausea and vomiting (100%), jaundice (95.2%), and anorexia (85.7%) were the most common reported symptoms. Fever was present in 57.1% of cases. Transaminase values were elevated in all patients and serum bilirubin was raised in 86% of patients. We found no statistically significant differences between clinical symptoms, laboratory results or duration of hospitalisation in patients with co-morbidities compared to those without. We also report a secondary case of HEV genotype 1 transmitted within Italy. Conclusion Our study highlights the epidemiological risk factors and clinical features of HEV infection in a migrant population in Italy and should stimulate further research regarding the prevalence and morbidity of HEV within migrant populations in Europe
