College Education Can Induce Stress, Anxiety, and Depression – Are You SAD?
College students must manage a great deal of stress, including heavy loads of coursework, deadlines, finances, families, working part-time or full-time, and choosing their lifelong careers. The Center for Collegiate Mental Health has reported that stress, anxiety, and depression (SAD) are the leading reasons that students reach out for mental health services. However, stigma has been identified as the primary barrier to treatment. Students should be encouraged to seek the help of medical professionals and develop healthy habits because these serious conditions can negatively affect educational performance, work performance, and quality of life. Secondary research methods will be used to analyze evidence-based publications and obtain detailed information. The literature analysis will identify the scale of the issue, the effect of stigma, and reliable actions students can take for their health. The purpose of this research is to generate mental health awareness for existing and future college students, reduce stigma, and equip students with healthy techniques for coping with and combating these conditions. It is important that these issues be addressed in order to enhance the education, health, and overall well-being of students worldwide
Distance measures to compare real and ideal quantum processes
With growing success in experimental implementations it is critical to
identify a "gold standard" for quantum information processing, a single measure
of distance that can be used to compare and contrast different experiments. We
enumerate a set of criteria such a distance measure must satisfy to be both
experimentally and theoretically meaningful. We then assess a wide range of
possible measures against these criteria, before making a recommendation as to

Position Statement Executive Summary: Guidelines and Recommendations for Laboratory Analysis in the Diagnosis and Management of Diabetes Mellitus
Background: Multiple laboratory tests are used in the diagnosis and management of patients with diabetes mellitus. The quality of the scientific evidence supporting the use of these assays varies substantially. Approach: An expert committee compiled evidence-based recommendations for the use of laboratory analysis in patients with diabetes. A new system was developed to grade the overall quality of the evidence and the strength of the recommendations. A draft of the guidelines was posted on the Internet, and the document was modified in response to comments. The guidelines were reviewed by the joint Evidence-Based Laboratory Medicine Committee of the AACC and the National Academy of Clinical Biochemistry and were accepted after revisions by the Professional Practice Committee and subsequent approval by the Executive Committee of the American Diabetes Association. Content: In addition to the long-standing criteria based on measurement of venous plasma glucose, diabetes can be diagnosed by demonstrating increased hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) concentrations in the blood. Monitoring of glycemic control is performed by the patients measuring their own plasma or blood glucose with meters and by laboratory analysis of HbA1c. The potential roles of noninvasive glucose monitoring, genetic testing, and measurement of autoantibodies, urine albumin, insulin, proinsulin, C-peptide, and other analytes are addressed. Summary: The guidelines provide specific recommendations based on published data or derived from expert consensus. Several analytes are found to have minimal clinical value at the present time, and measurement of them is not recommended
ORMIR_XCT: A Python package for high resolution peripheral quantitative computed tomography image processing
High resolution peripheral quantitative computed tomography (HR-pQCT) is an
imaging technique capable of imaging trabecular bone in-vivo. HR-pQCT has a
wide range of applications, primarily focused on bone to improve our
understanding of musculoskeletal diseases, assess epidemiological associations,
and evaluate the effects of pharmaceutical interventions. Processing HR-pQCT
images has largely been supported using the scanner manufacturer scripting
language (Image Processing Language, IPL, Scanco Medical). However, by
expanding image processing workflows outside of the scanner manufacturer
software environment, users have the flexibility to apply more advanced
mathematical techniques and leverage modern software packages to improve image
processing. The ORMIR_XCT Python package was developed to reimplement some
existing IPL workflows and provide an open and reproducible package allowing
for the development of advanced HR-pQCT data processing workflows
Conflict of Interest Policies at Canadian Universities: Clarity and Content

Are university COI policies accessible and understandable? To whom are these policies addressed (faculty, staff, students)? Is COI clearly defined in these policies and are procedures laid out for avoiding or remedying such situations? To begin tackling these important ethical and governance questions, our study examines the COI policies at the Group of Thirteen (G13) leading Canadian research universities. When to start antiretroviral therapy in resource-limited settings: a human rights analysis
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Recent evidence from developed and developing countries shows clear clinical and public health benefit to starting antiretroviral therapy (ART) earlier. While discussions about when to start ART have often focused on the clinical risks and benefits, the main issue is one of fair limit-setting. We applied a human rights framework to assess a policy of early treatment initiation according to the following criteria: public-health purpose; likely effectiveness; specificity; human rights burdens and benefits; potential for less restrictive approaches; and fair administration.</p> <p>Discussion</p> <p>According to our analysis, a policy of earlier ART initiation would better serve both public health and human rights objectives. We highlight a number of policy approaches that could be taken to help meet this aim, including increased international financial support, alternative models of care, and policies to secure the most affordable sources of appropriate antiretroviral drugs.</p> <p>Summary</p> <p>Widespread implementation of earlier ART initiation is challenging in resource-limited settings. Nevertheless, rationing of essential medicines is a restriction of human rights, and the principle of least restriction serves to focus attention on alternative measures such as adapting health service models to increase capacity, decreasing costs, and seeking additional international funding. Progressive realisation using well-defined steps will be necessary to allow for a phased implementation as part of a framework of short-term targets towards nationwide policy adoption, and will require international technical and financial support.</p

A global look at time: a 24-country study of the equivalence of the Zimbardo Time Perspective Inventory
In this article, we assess the structural equivalence of the Zimbardo Time Perspective Inventory (ZTPI) across 26 samples from 24 countries (N = 12,200). The ZTPI is proven to be a valid and reliable index of individual differences in time perspective across five temporal categories: Past Negative, Past Positive, Present Fatalistic, Present Hedonistic, and Future. We obtained evidence for invariance of 36 items (out of 56) and also the five-factor structure of ZTPI across 23 countries. The short ZTPI scales are reliable for country-level analysis, whereas we recommend the use of the full scales for individual-level analysis. The short version of ZTPI will further promote integration of research in the time perspective domain in relation to many different psycho-social processes
