Linear stability analysis of transverse dunes
Sand-moving winds blowing from a constant direction in an area of high sand
availability form transverse dunes, which have a fixed profile in the direction
orthogonal to the wind. Here we show, by means of a linear stability analysis,
that transverse dunes are intrinsically unstable. Any along-axis perturbation
on a transverse dune amplify in the course of dune migration due to the
combined effect of two main factors, namely: the lateral transport through
avalanches along the dune's slip-face, and the scaling of dune migration
velocity with the inverse of the dune height. Our calculations provide a
quantitative explanation for recent observations from experiments and numerical
simulations, which showed that transverse dunes moving on the bedrock cannot
exist in a stable form and decay into a chain of crescent-shaped barchans.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figure
Military sexual trauma: gender, military cultures, and the medicalization of abuse in contemporary America
Sexual violence is a serious problem within armed services. This article explores intra-service rape – that is, rape carried out by servicepersonnel against other servicepersonnel – in branches of the U.S. military from the 1990s to the present. Such forms of violence are often denied by senior military officers and, when acknowledged, routinely minimized. The article begins by establishing the parameters of the crisis of sexual abuse within the US armed services. Second, it explores systematic failures to recognize forms of suffering. Victim-survivors in the military are vulnerable to military-specific obstacles to reporting their abuse and being believed, including contractual restrictions and ‘chains of command’, organizational cohesion, warrior comportment, interpersonal vulnerability, and gendered and sexual identities. Particular attention is paid to differences by gender and sexual orientation. Third, it analyses the medicalization of suffering in the modern military and its effects. What meanings are assigned to ‘military sexual trauma’ (MST) and how has that label affected victim-survivors of rape or sexual assault? The article concludes by arguing that the concept of ‘trauma’ as it is applied to victims of sexual abuse does a formidable amount of political and ideological work
Model for a dune field with exposed water table
Aeolian transport in coastal areas can be significantly affected by the
presence of an exposed water table. In some dune fields, such as in
Len\c{c}\'ois Maranhenses, northeastern Brazil, the water table oscillates in
response to seasonal changes of rainfall and rates of evapotranspiration,
rising above the ground during the wet season and sinking below in the dry
period. A quantitative understanding of dune mobility in an environment with
varying groundwater level is essential for coastal management as well as for
the study of long-term evolution of many dune fields. Here we apply a model for
aeolian dunes to study the genesis of coastal dune fields in presence of an
oscillating water table. We find that the morphology of the field depends on
the time cycle, , of the water table and the maximum height,
, of its oscillation. Our calculations show that long chains of
barchanoids alternating with interdune ponds such as found at Len\c{c}\'ois
Maranhenses arise when is of the order of the dune turnover
time, whereas dictates the growth rate of dune height with
distance downwind. We reproduce quantitatively the morphology and size of dunes
at Len\c{c}\'ois Maranhenses, as well as the total relative area between dunes.Comment: 12 pages, 12 figure
Developing a predictive modelling capacity for a climate change-vulnerable blanket bog habitat: Assessing 1961-1990 baseline relationships
Aim: Understanding the spatial distribution of high priority habitats and
developing predictive models using climate and environmental variables to
replicate these distributions are desirable conservation goals. The aim of this
study was to model and elucidate the contributions of climate and topography to
the distribution of a priority blanket bog habitat in Ireland, and to examine how
this might inform the development of a climate change predictive capacity for
peat-lands in Ireland.
Methods: Ten climatic and two topographic variables were recorded for grid
cells with a spatial resolution of 1010 km, covering 87% of the mainland
land surface of Ireland. Presence-absence data were matched to these variables
and generalised linear models (GLMs) fitted to identify the main climatic and
terrain predictor variables for occurrence of the habitat. Candidate predictor
variables were screened for collinearity, and the accuracy of the final fitted GLM
was evaluated using fourfold cross-validation based on the area under the curve
(AUC) derived from a receiver operating characteristic (ROC) plot. The GLM
predicted habitat occurrence probability maps were mapped against the actual
distributions using GIS techniques.
Results: Despite the apparent parsimony of the initial GLM using only climatic
variables, further testing indicated collinearity among temperature and precipitation
variables for example. Subsequent elimination of the collinear variables and
inclusion of elevation data produced an excellent performance based on the AUC
scores of the final GLM. Mean annual temperature and total mean annual
precipitation in combination with elevation range were the most powerful
explanatory variable group among those explored for the presence of blanket
bog habitat.
Main conclusions: The results confirm that this habitat distribution in general
can be modelled well using the non-collinear climatic and terrain variables tested
at the grid resolution used. Mapping the GLM-predicted distribution to the
observed distribution produced useful results in replicating the projected
occurrence of the habitat distribution over an extensive area. The methods

Cost-effectiveness of replacing versus discarding the nail in children with nail bed injury
Every year in the UK, around 10 000 children need to have operations to mend injuries to the bed of their fingernails. Currently, most children have their fingernail placed back on the injured nail bed after the operation. The NINJA trial found that children were slightly less likely to have an infection if the nail was thrown away rather than being put back, but the difference between groups was small and could have be due to chance. This study looked at whether replacing the nail is cost-effective compared with throwing it away. Using data from the NINJA trial, we compared costs, healthcare use, and quality of life and assessed the cost-effectiveness of replacing the nail. It was found that throwing the nail away after surgery would save the National Health Service (NHS) £75 (€85) per operation compared with placing the nail back on the nail bed. Changing clinical practice could save the NHS in England £720 000 (€819 000) per year
Dimethyl fumarate in patients admitted to hospital with COVID-19 (RECOVERY): a randomised, controlled, open-label, platform trial
Dimethyl fumarate (DMF) inhibits inflammasome-mediated inflammation and has been proposed as a treatment for patients hospitalised with COVID-19. This randomised, controlled, open-label platform trial (Randomised Evaluation of COVID-19 Therapy [RECOVERY]), is assessing multiple treatments in patients hospitalised for COVID-19 (NCT04381936, ISRCTN50189673). In this assessment of DMF performed at 27 UK hospitals, adults were randomly allocated (1:1) to either usual standard of care alone or usual standard of care plus DMF. The primary outcome was clinical status on day 5 measured on a seven-point ordinal scale. Secondary outcomes were time to sustained improvement in clinical status, time to discharge, day 5 peripheral blood oxygenation, day 5 C-reactive protein, and improvement in day 10 clinical status. Between 2 March 2021 and 18 November 2021, 713 patients were enroled in the DMF evaluation, of whom 356 were randomly allocated to receive usual care plus DMF, and 357 to usual care alone. 95% of patients received corticosteroids as part of routine care. There was no evidence of a beneficial effect of DMF on clinical status at day 5 (common odds ratio of unfavourable outcome 1.12; 95% CI 0.86-1.47; p = 0.40). Receptor heterogeneity in the human thyroid: Differences between thyrotrophin binding sites in membrane and nuclear fractions
Binding of I-labelled bovine TSH to crude membrane fractions of human thyroid tissue was a saturable, hormonally specific process which yielded non-linear Scatchard plots with limiting affinities of approximately 10 and 10l/mol. Binding activity in membranes was soluble in Triton X-100, was inhibited specifically by immunoglobulins from patients with Graves's disease, and was increased by the beta-blocking drug, propranolol. In contrast, purified nuclear preparations showed a predominance of lower affinity binding, and their binding activity was insoluble in Triton and insensitive to immunoglobulins from patients with Graves's disease and to propranolol. Tryptic digestion liberated only low affinity binding activity from membranes or nuclei. It was concluded that human thyroid tissue contains independent classes of TSH-binding sites, which differ in their chemical, immunological and hormone-binding properties
