Vegetation recovery in tidal marshes reveals critical slowing down under increased inundation
A declining rate of recovery following disturbance has been proposed as an important early warning for impending tipping points in complex systems. Despite extensive theoretical and laboratory studies, this \u27critical slowing down\u27 remains largely untested in the complex settings of real-world ecosystems. Here, we provide both observational and experimental support of critical slowing down along natural stress gradients in tidal marsh ecosystems. Time series of aerial images of European marsh development reveal a consistent lengthening of recovery time as inundation stress increases. We corroborate this finding with transplantation experiments in European and North American tidal marshes. In particular, our results emphasize the power of direct observational or experimental measures of recovery over indirect statistical signatures, such as spatial variance or autocorrelation. Our results indicate that the phenomenon of critical slowing down can provide a powerful tool to probe the resilience of natural ecosystems

Spinocerebellar ataxia type 1 (SCA1) is a hereditary neurodegenerative disease caused by a CAG repeat expansion in exon 8 of the ATXN1 gene. We generated induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSCs) from a SCA1 patient and his non-affected sister by using non-integrating Sendai Viruses (SeV). The resulting hiPSCs are SeVfree, express pluripotency markers, display a normal karyotype, retain the mutation (length of the CAG repeat expansion in the ATXN1 gene) and are able to differentiate into the three germ layers in vitro
Religious Values, Practices and Pregnancy Outcomes: A Comparison of the Impact of Sect and Mainstream Christian Affiliation
In this report 6566 women enrolled in the Mater-University of Queensland Study of Pregnancy (MUSP) were separated into three groups; members of religious sects, Christians who attend church frequently and Christians who are infrequent attenders. These three groups, respectively labelled Christian sects, Christian attenders and lukewarm Christians were compared on a number of social background, lifestyle and pregnancy outcome variables. The sect members appeared to have the most favourable health, lifestyles and healthy babies at delivery, though this latter finding appears attributable to specific characteristics of the mother and her lifestyle. On most measures the children of lukewarm Christians appear to manifest the worst health while Christian attenders form a group whose children's health is between that of sect members and lukewarm Christians
Tolerability and beneficial effects of sacubitril/valsartan on systemic right ventricular failure
ObjectivePatients with a systemic right ventricle (sRV) in the context of transposition of the great arteries (TGA) after atrial switch or congenitally corrected TGA (ccTGA) are prone to sRV dysfunction. Pharmacological options for sRV failure remain poorly defined. This study aims to investigate the tolerability and effects of sacubitril/valsartan on sRV failure in adult patients with sRV. MethodsIn this two-centre, prospective cohort study, all consecutive adult patients with symptomatic heart failure and at least moderately reduced sRV systolic function were initiated on sacubitril/valsartan and underwent structured follow-up. ResultsData of 40 patients were included (40% female, 30% ccTGA, median age 48 (44-53) years). Five patients discontinued therapy during titration. Median follow-up was 24 (12-36) months. The maximal dose was tolerated by 49% of patients. No episodes of hyperkalaemia or renal function decline occurred. Six-minute walking distance increased significantly after 6 months of treatment (569 +/- 16 to 597 +/- 16 m, p=0.016). Serum N-terminal-prohormone brain natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) levels decreased significantly after 3 months (567 (374-1134) to 404 (226-633) ng/L, p<0.001). Small, yet consistent echocardiographic improvements in sRV function were observed after 6 months (sRV global longitudinal strain: -11.1 +/- 0.5% to -12.6 +/- 0.7%, p<0.001, and fractional area change: 20% (16%-24%) to 26% (19%-30%), p<0.001). The linear mixed-effects model illustrated that after first follow-up moment, no time effect was present for the parameters. ConclusionsTreatment with sacubitril/valsartan was associated with a low rate of adverse effects in this adult sRV cohort. Persisting improvement in 6-minute walking test distance, NT-proBNP levels and echocardiographic parameters of sRV function was observed in an on-treatment analysis and showed no differential response based on sex or anatomy.Cardiolog
How natural foreshores offer flood protection during dike breaches: An explorative flume study
In this paper we describe one aspect of nature-based flood protection by foreshores in hybrid flood defences and discuss how foreshore ecosystem restoration can contribute to flood protection. Flood protection consists of flood prevention, by grey, green or hybrid defences, and flood impact reduction, by spatial planning to limit damage and crisis management to limit exposure. Reduction of flood impact is increasingly important because no flood defence system can provide 100% safety, especially with climate change and sea level rise. In this study we aim to understand and visualize the effect of foreshore characteristics (i.e., width, elevation and erodibility) on flooding impact in the hinterland of hybrid flood defences. As it is difficult to research real dike breaches, we do an explorative flume study to analyse the impact of a mimicked dike breach in the hinterland. Our physical scale model showed the presence of a non-erodible foreshore reduces flood damage in the hinterland. With regards to foreshore characteristics, mainly foreshore elevation and erodibility are important, while differing foreshore width has little additional influence. Already a narrow foreshore reduced flood impact in the flume hinterland. Our findings strengthen the appeal to integrate Nature-based flood protection by foreshores in hybrid flood defences. Grey flood defences can be turned into hybrid flood defences even if there is limited space for foreshore ecosystem restoration, for instance by managed realignment
Honeybees balance essential fatty acids and suffer cognitively from deficiency
Abstract Background and aims. Epidemiological data on autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) are scarce. In this study, we determined the clinical and epidemiological characteristics of AIH patients in the Netherlands (16.7 million inhabitants). Methods. Clinical characteristics were collected from 1313 AIH patients (78% females) from 31 centers, including all eight academic centers in the Netherlands. Additional data on ethnicity, family history and symptoms were obtained by the use of a questionnaire. Results. The prevalence of AIH was 18.3 (95% confidential interval [CI]: 17.3-19.4) per 100,000 with an annual incidence of 1.1 (95% CI: 0.5-2) in adults. An incidence peak was found in middle-aged women. At diagnosis, 56% of patients had fibrosis and 12% cirrhosis in liver biopsy. Overall, 1% of patients developed HCC and 3% of patients underwent liver transplantation. Overlap with primary biliary cirrhosis and primary sclerosing cholangitis was found in 9% and 6%, respectively. The clinical course did not differ between Caucasian and non-Caucasian patients. Other autoimmune diseases were found in 26% of patients. Half of the patients reported persistent AIH-related symptoms despite treatment with a median treatment period of 8 years (range 1-44 years). Familial occurrence was reported in three cases. Conclusion. This is the largest epidemiological study of AIH in a geographically defined region and demonstrates that the prevalence of AIH in the Netherlands is uncommon. Although familial occurrence of AIH is extremely rare, our twin data may point towards a genetic predisposition. The high percentage of patients with cirrhosis or fibrosis at diagnosis urges the need of more awareness for AIH
