Some Simple Thoughts on Model Building for Developing Countries

The revival of interest in using models for developing countries for planning and policy advice makes it desirable to draw lessons from past experience. Simple models, focussed on specific issues, are to be preferred to large and comprehensive models. More empirical research is needed on supply and production functions for developing countries. Not statistical criteria but developmental considerations must determine the conclusions to be drawn from models. More explicit explanations of assumptions and modesty in presenting results of modelling work to policy makers are desirable

Normative data for the Dutch version of the Penn State Worry Questionnaire.

Worry is a common symptom in various psychiatric problems and the key symptom of generalised anxiety disorder (GAD). The Penn State Worry Questionnaire (PSWQ) is the most widely used self-report scale for measuring worry. The present study provides normative data for the Dutch version of the PSWQ for a large community sample and a clinically referred sample of patients with GAD. Norms are not only provided for the original 16-item version, but also for an abbreviated 11-item version, which only consists of the positively worded items and has been shown to be a promising alternative to the full-length version. The percentile scores obtained for the community sample and the clinical GAD sample did not show much overlap, and this appeared true for the full-length as well as the abbreviated version of the PSWQ. These normative data seem suitable for differentiating between normal and abnormal manifestations of worrying and for evaluating the efficacy of treatments for GAD. Prognostic association of depression following myocardial infarction with mortality and cardiovascular events:A meta-analysis of 25 years of research

AbstractObjectiveA meta-analysis of over 25 years of research into the relationship between post-myocardial infarction (MI) depression and cardiac prognosis was conducted to investigate changes in this association over time and to investigate subgroup effects.MethodA systematic literature search was performed (Medline, Embase and PsycINFO; 1975–2011) without language restrictions. Studies investigating the impact of post-MI depression on cardiovascular outcome, defined as all-cause mortality, cardiac mortality and cardiac events within 24 months after the index MI, were identified. Depression had to be assessed within 3 months after MI using established instruments. Pooled odds ratios (ORs) were calculated using a random effects model.ResultsA total of 29 studies were identified, resulting in 41 comparisons. Follow-up (on average 16 months) was described for 16,889 MI patients. Post-MI depression was associated with an increased risk of all-cause mortality [(OR), 2.25; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.73–2.93; P<.001], cardiac mortality (OR, 2.71; 95% CI, 1.68–4.36; P<.001) and cardiac events (OR, 1.59; 95% CI, 1.37–1.85; P<.001). ORs proved robust in subgroup analyses but declined over the years for cardiac events.ConclusionsPost-MI depression is associated with a 1.6- to 2.7-fold increased risk of impaired outcomes within 24 months. This association has been relatively stable over the past 25 years

Procedural justice and status: status salience as antecedent of procedural fairness effects

The current article explores status as an antecedent of procedural fairness effects (the findings that perceived procedural fairness affects people’s reactions, e.g., their relational judgments). On the basis of the literature, the authors proposed that salience of the general concept of status leads people to be more attentive to procedural fairness information and that, as a consequence, stronger procedural fairness effects should be found. In correspondence with this hypothesis, Experiment 1 showed stronger procedural fairness effects on people’s relational treatment evaluations in a status salient condition compared with a control condition. Experiment 2 replicated this effect and, in further correspondence with the hypothesis, showed that status salience led to increased cognitive accessibility of fairness concerns. Implications for the psychology of procedural justice are discussed

Percepties door commissarissen van de communicatie door de accountant

Hoewel de kritiek op de wijze waarop accountants communiceren niet van vandaag of gisteren is, lijkt de communicatie de laatste tijd te verbeteren. Omdat commissarissen een voorname rol spelen in het verhogen van het vertrouwen in de sector, en omdat zij een duidelijke visie hebben op de wijze waarop accountants zouden moeten communiceren, is het van belang te weten wat hun visie is op de communicatie door de accountant. Daarom is in 2019 onderzoek uitgevoerd onder de titel ‘Percepties door commissarissen van de communicatie door de accountant’. Uit het onderzoek blijkt dat de opzet en inhoud van de schriftelijke rapportages van de accountant (controleplan, presentaties/rapport met tussentijdse observaties/managementletter, accountantsverslag en controleverklaring) voldoen aan de behoefte en verwachtingen van de auditcommissie en raad van commissarissen. De verwachting was dat gevoelige onderwerpen nu al vaker dan in het verleden in de schriftelijke rapportages zouden terugkomen, dit gezien de actualiteit en de rol en verantwoordelijkheden van respectievelijk bestuur, commissarissen en accountant. Dit blijkt echter niet het geval. Over de kritische aard van de schriftelijke rapportages van de accountant zijn de commissarissen positief gestemd. Meer dan twee derde van de commissarissen vindt dat de teksten van de accountant voldoende kritisch zijn. Op de vraag of de schriftelijke rapportages van de accountant gedeeld zouden moeten worden met de algemene vergadering van aandeelhouders zijn commissarissen evenwel terughoudend. Over de rol van de accountant in de algemene vergadering van aandeelhouders in algemene zin zijn de geïnterviewde commissarissen duidelijk. De huidige invulling is een sterke verbetering ten opzichte van het verleden. Hoewel commissarissen terughoudend zijn over het delen van de schriftelijke rapportages van de accountant met de aandeelhouders zijn zij wel overwegend positief over de stelling dat het bestuur transparanter moet zijn over de bevindingen van de accountant. Zouden commissarissen zelf transparanter moeten zijn over de bevindingen van de accountant? Op deze vraag antwoorden de respondenten positief. Opvallende conclusie is dat de geïnterviewde commissarissen de mondelinge toelichting door de accountant van groot belang vinden. Een grote meerderheid (80%) is van mening dat de mondelinge communicatie door de accountant momenteel voldoet aan de verwachtingen. Daarnaast vindt maar liefst 96% van de commissarissen dat deze mondelinge communicatie bijdraagt aan de eigen toezichthoudende rol. De commissarissen is ook gevraagd naar de toegevoegde waarde van de aanwezigheid van de accountant bij vergaderingen. De grootste toegevoegde waarde wordt herkend bij de aanwezigheid in de auditcommissie. Commissarissen zijn uitermate positief over de private sessies met de accountant. Op basis van de enquête, de rondetafelbijeenkomsten, praktijkervaringen en interviews met commissarissen hebben we een praktische invulling willen geven aan de wet- en regelgeving. Dit heeft geresulteerd in een communicatiemodel accountancy. Hoewel de verschillende contactmomenten per fase door veel accountants al worden gebruikt, bevat dit model alle stappen in een schematische weergave. Door het model als uitgangspunt te gebruiken, wordt bereikt dat geen moment wordt overgeslagen en dat elke communicatiemijlpaal een onmisbare plek in het controleproces krijgt

Group belongingness and procedural justice: Social inclusion and exclusion by peers affects the psychology of voice

The authors focus on the relation between group membership and procedural justice. They argue that whether people are socially included or excluded by their peers influences their reactions to unrelated experiences of procedural justice. Findings from 2 experiments corroborate the prediction that reactions to voice as opposed to no-voice procedures are affected more strongly when people are included in a group than when they are excluded from a group. These findings are extended with a 3rd experiment that shows that people who generally experience higher levels of inclusion in their lives respond more strongly to voice as opposed to no-voice procedures. It is concluded that people's reactions to procedural justice are moderated by people's level of inclusion in social groups
