The reactions are reported of NbX5(X = Cl, Br), TiCl4and Ti(OiPr)4with a selection of carboxylic acids exhibiting a known biological role, in a chlorinated solvent. The reactions of NbX5with acetylsalicylic acid (aspirin) proceeded with selective deacetylation of the organic reactant and formation of the salicylate complexes NbX4(C7H5O3) (1a, X = Cl; 1b, X = Br) in 60–65% yields. NbCl5reacted with diclofenac and ethacrynic acid (EA-CO2H) to give NbCl3[κ3O,O,N-O2CCH2(C6H4)NC6H3Cl2], 2 (80% yield), and NbCl4(O2C-EA), 3 (72% yield), respectively. Ti(OiPr)4reacted with ethacrynic acid giving Ti(OiPr)2(O2C-EA)2, 4, in 74% yield, as a mixture of two isomers. All the products were characterized by means of analytical and spectroscopic methods, moreover DFT studies were carried out to give insight into structural features

Biosafety is extremely important for health and beauty services. The National Sanitary Surveillance Agency proposes that beauty salons use a standard operating procedure (SOP) for adequately cleaning hair brushes. A noncompliance with this practice can lead to cross-infection. In these establishments there are thermosensitive materials that can not be autoclaved, therefore ozone is an alternative as low temperature sterilization. Present in our normal microbiota, S. aureus can lead to simple diseases and serious diseases. Similarly M. canis is a zoophilic dermatophyte known to be the cause for tinea capitis. The present study was performed on hairbrushes and cultures contaminated with the microorganisms described above, evaluating the ozone effect in microbial control. In plaques the evaluation of M. canis showed a partial reduction of growth in 30 minutes and total inhibition in 60 minutes. With S. aureus, inhibition occurred at both times. In the evaluation of hairbrushes, the results achieved were important but not satisfactory in terms of sterilization. Corroborating with existing studies, it is concluded that the use of ozone can be indicated for many areas of concentration such as medical, dental, veterinary and even beauty. Key-words: Ozone. Microsporum. Staphylococcus aureus. Scalp. : Circular RNAs (circRNAs) are emerging molecular players in leukemogenesis and promising therapeutic targets. In KMT2A::AFF1 (MLL::AF4)-rearranged leukemia, an aggressive disease compared with other pediatric B-cell precursor (BCP) acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), data about circRNAs are limited. Here, we disclose the circRNA landscape of infant patients with KMT2A::AFF1 translocated BCP-ALL showing dysregulated, mostly ectopically expressed, circRNAs in leukemia cells. Most of these circRNAs, apart from circHIPK3 and circZNF609, previously associated with oncogenic behavior in ALL, are still uncharacterized. An in vitro loss-of-function screening identified an oncogenic role of circFKBP5, circKLHL2, circNR3C1, and circPAN3 in KMT2A::AFF1 ALL, whose silencing affected cell proliferation and apoptosis. Further study in an extended cohort disclosed a significantly correlated expression of these oncogenic circRNAs and their putative involvement in common regulatory networks. Moreover, it showed that circAFF1 upregulation occurs in a subset of cases with HOXA KMT2A::AFF1 ALL. Collectively, functional analyses and patient data reveal oncogenic circRNA upregulation as a relevant mechanism that sustains the malignant cell phenotype in KMT2A::AFF1 ALL

Gastrointestinal diseases, such as peptic ulcers, are caused by a damage in the gastric mucosa provoked by several factors. This stomach injury is regulated by many inflammatory mediators and is commonly treated with proton-pump inhibitors, histamine H2 receptor blockers and antacids. However, various medicinal plants have demonstrated positive effects on gastric ulcer treatment, including plants of the Ceiba genus. The aim of this study was to evaluate the antiulcer and anti-inflammatory activities of the stem bark ethanolic extract of Ceiba speciosa (A. St.-Hil.) Ravenna. We performed a preliminary quantification of phenolic compounds by high-performance liquid chromatography-diode array detection (HPLC-DAD), followed by the prospection of other chemical groups through nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. A set of in vitro assays was used to evaluate the extract potential regarding its antioxidant activity (DPPH: 19.83 ± 0.34 µg/mL; TPC: 307.20 ± 6.20 mg GAE/g of extract), effects on cell viability and on the release of TNF-α in whole human blood. Additionally, in vivo assays were performed to evaluate the leukocyte accumulation and total protein quantification in carrageenan-induced air pouch, as well as the antiulcerogenic effect of the extract on an ethanol-induced ulcer in rats. The extract contains flavonoids and phenolic compounds, as well as sugars and quinic acid derivatives exhibiting potent antioxidant activity and low toxicity. The extract reduced the release of TNF-α in human blood and inhibited the activity of p38α (1.66 µg/mL), JAK3 (5.25 µg/mL), and JNK3 (8.34 µg/mL). Moreover, it reduced the leukocyte recruitment on the pouch exudate and the formation of edema, reverting the effects caused by carrageenan. The extract presented a significant prevention of ulcer formation and a higher reduction than the reference drug, Omeprazole. Therefore, C. speciosa extract has demonstrated relevant therapeutic potential for the treatment of gastric diseases, deserving the continuation of further studies to unveil the mechanisms of action of plant bioactive ingredients

Incorporation of Eu-Tb codoped nanophosphors in silica-based coatings assisted by atmospheric pressure plasma jet technology

Different deposition methods of nanocomposite silica films with embedded Y2O3:Eu3+, Tb3+ by atmospheric pressure plasma jet (APPJ) technology are presented. We found that a two-step strategy consisting in the APPJ deposition of a silica film on previously deposited nanophosphors is a very efficientmethod to obtain nanocomposite coatings with excellent adhesion to the substrate. Moreover the APPJ deposited silica film ensures protection of the luminescent nanoparticles and preserves the photoluminescence emission properties of the nanophosphors. Optically active coatings can be therefore deposited by using this technology
