Z2SAL: a translation-based model checker for Z
Despite being widely known and accepted in industry, the Z formal specification language has not so far been well supported by automated verification tools, mostly because of the challenges in handling the abstraction of the language. In this paper we discuss a novel approach to building a model-checker for Z, which involves implementing a translation from Z into SAL, the input language for the Symbolic Analysis Laboratory, a toolset which includes a number of model-checkers and a simulator. The Z2SAL translation deals with a number of important issues, including: mapping unbounded, abstract specifications into bounded, finite models amenable to a BDD-based symbolic checker; converting a non-constructive and piecemeal style of functional specification into a deterministic, automaton-based style of specification; and supporting the rich set-based vocabulary of the Z mathematical toolkit. This paper discusses progress made towards implementing as complete and faithful a translation as possible, while highlighting certain assumptions, respecting certain limitations and making use of available optimisations. The translation is illustrated throughout with examples; and a complete working example is presented, together with performance data
Contrasting alterations to synaptic and intrinsic properties in upper-cervical superficial dorsal horn neurons following acute neck muscle inflammation
Background:
Acute and chronic pain in axial structures, like the back and neck, are difficult to treat, and have incidence as high as 15%. Surprisingly, most preclinical work on pain mechanisms focuses on cutaneous structures in the limbs and animal models of axial pain are not widely available. Accordingly, we developed a mouse model of acute cervical muscle inflammation and assessed the functional properties of superficial dorsal horn (SDH) neurons.<p></p>
Results:
Male C57/Bl6 mice (P24-P40) were deeply anaesthetised (urethane 2.2?g/kg i.p) and the rectus capitis major muscle (RCM) injected with 40??l of 2% carrageenan. Sham animals received vehicle injection and controls remained anaesthetised for 2?hrs. Mice in each group were sacrificed at 2?hrs for analysis. c-Fos staining was used to determine the location of activated neurons. c-Fos labelling in carrageenan-injected mice was concentrated within ipsilateral (87% and 63% of labelled neurons in C1 and C2 segments, respectively) and contralateral laminae I - II with some expression in lateral lamina V. c-Fos expression remained below detectable levels in control and sham animals. In additional experiments, whole cell recordings were obtained from visualised SDH neurons in transverse slices in the ipsilateral C1 and C2 spinal segments. Resting membrane potential and input resistance were not altered. Mean spontaneous EPSC amplitude was reduced by ~20% in neurons from carrageenan-injected mice versus control and sham animals (20.63???1.05 vs. 24.64???0.91 and 25.87???1.32 pA, respectively). The amplitude (238???33 vs. 494???96 and 593???167 pA) and inactivation time constant (12.9???1.5 vs. 22.1???3.6 and 15.3???1.4?ms) of the rapid A type potassium current (IAr), the dominant subthreshold current in SDH neurons, were reduced in carrageenan-injected mice.<p></p>
Conclusions:
Excitatory synaptic drive onto, and important intrinsic properties (i.e., IAr) within SDH neurons are reduced two hours after acute muscle inflammation. We propose this time point represents an important transition period between peripheral and central sensitisation with reduced excitatory drive providing an initial neuroprotective mechanism during the early stages of the progression towards central sensitisation
The impact of relative position and returns on sacrifice and reciprocity: an experimental study using individual decisions
We present a comprehensive experimental design that makes it possible to characterize other-regarding preferences and their relationship to the decision makerâs relative position. Participants are faced with a large number of decisions involving variations in the trade-offs between own and otherâs payoffs, as well as in other potentially important factors like the decision makerâs relative position. We find that: (1) choices are responsive to the cost of helping and hurting others; (2) The weight a decision maker places on othersâ monetary payoffs depends on whether the decision maker is in an advantageous or disadvantageous relative position; and (3) We find no evidence of reciprocity of the type linked to menu-dependence. The results of a mixture-model estimation show considerable heterogeneity in subjectsâ motivations and confirm the absence of reciprocal motives. Pure selfish behavior is the most frequently observed behavior. Among the subjects exhibiting social preferences, social-welfare maximization is the most frequent, followed by inequality-aversion and by competitiveness
Sloan Digital Sky Survey Spectroscopic Lens Search. I. Discovery of Intermediate-Redshift Star-Forming Galaxies Behind Foreground Luminous Red Galaxies
We present a catalog of 49 spectroscopic strong gravitational lens candidates
selected from a Sloan Digital Sky Survey sample of 50996 luminous red galaxies.
Potentially lensed star-forming galaxies are detected through the presence of
background oxygen and hydrogen nebular emission lines in the spectra of these
massive foreground galaxies. This multiline selection eliminates the ambiguity
of single-line identification and provides a very promising sample of candidate
galaxy-galaxy lens systems at low to intermediate redshift, with foreground
redshifts ranging from 0.16 to 0.49 and background redshifts from 0.25 to 0.81.
Any lenses confirmed within our sample would be important new probes of
early-type galaxy mass distributions, providing complementary constraints to

Galaxy And Mass Assembly (GAMA) blended spectra catalogue: strong galaxy-galaxy lens and occulting galaxy pair candidates
We present the catalogue of blended galaxy spectra from the Galaxy And Mass Assembly (GAMA) survey. These are cases where light from two galaxies are significantly detected in a single GAMA fibre. Galaxy pairs identified from their blended spectrum fall into two principal classes: they are either strong lenses, a passive galaxy lensing an emission-line galaxy; or occulting galaxies, serendipitous overlaps of two galaxies, of any type. Blended spectra can thus be used to reliably identify strong lenses for follow-up observations (high-resolution imaging) and occulting pairs, especially those that are a late-type partly obscuring an early-type galaxy which are of interest for the study of dust content of spiral and irregular galaxies. The GAMA survey setup and its AUTOZ automated redshift determination were used to identify candidate blended galaxy spectra from the cross-correlation peaks. We identify 280 blended spectra with a minimum velocity separation of 600âkmâsâ1, of which 104 are lens pair candidates, 71 emission-line-passive pairs, 78 are pairs of emission-line galaxies and 27 are pairs of galaxies with passive spectra. We have visually inspected the candidates in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) and Kilo Degree Survey (KiDS) images. Many blended objects are ellipticals with blue fuzz (Ef in our classification). These latter âEfâ classifications are candidates for possible strong lenses, massive ellipticals with an emission-line galaxy in one or more lensed images. The GAMA lens and occulting galaxy candidate samples are similar in size to those identified in the entire SDSS. This blended spectrum sample stands as a testament of the power of this highly complete, second-largest spectroscopic survey in existence and offers the possibility to expand e.g. strong gravitational lens surveys

form, what can be understood in terms of the resonant tunneling through

Spacecraft VLBI tracking to enhance stellar occultations astrometry of planetary satellites
Stellar occultations currently provide the most accurate ground-based
measurements of the positions of natural satellites (down to a few kilometres
for the Galilean moons). However, when using these observations in the
calculation of satellite ephemerides, the uncertainty in the planetary
ephemerides dominates the error budget of the occultation. We quantify the
local refinement in the central planet's position achievable by performing Very
Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) tracking of an in-system spacecraft
temporally close to an occultation. We demonstrate the potential of using VLBI
to enhance the science return of stellar occultations for satellite
ephemerides. We identified the most promising observation and tracking
opportunities offered by the Juno spacecraft around Jupiter as perfect test
cases, for which we ran simulations of our VLBI experiment. VLBI tracking at
Juno's perijove close to a stellar occultation locally (in time) reduces the
uncertainty in Jupiter's angular position in the sky to 250-400 m. This
represents up to an order of magnitude improvement with respect to current
solutions and is lower than the stellar occultation error, thus allowing the
moon ephemeris solution to fully benefit from the observation. Our simulations
showed that the proposed tracking and observation experiment can efficiently
use synergies between ground- and space-based observations to enhance the
science return on both ends. The reduced error budget for stellar occultations
indeed helps to improve the moons' ephemerides, which in turn benefit planetary
missions and their science products, such as the recently launched JUICE and
upcoming Europa Clipper missions
Extended Emission Line Gas in Radio Galaxies - PKS0349-27
PKS0349-27 is a classical FRII radio galaxy with an AGN host which has a
spectacular, spiral-like structure in its extended emission line gas (EELG). We
have measured the velocity field in this gas and find that it splits into 2
cloud groups separated by radial velocities which at some points approach 400
km/s Measurements of the diagnostic emission line ratios [OIII]5007/H-beta,
[SII]6716+6731/H-alpha, and [NII]6583/H-alpha in these clouds show no evidence
for the type of HII region emission associated with starburst activity in
either velocity system. The measured emission line ratios are similar to those
found in the nuclei of narrow-line radio galaxies, but the extended
ionization/excitation cannot be produced by continuum emission from the active
nucleus alone. We present arguments which suggest that the velocity
disturbances seen in the EELG are most likely the result of a galaxy-galaxy
collision or merger but cannot completely rule out the possibility that the gas
has been disrupted by the passage of a radio jet.Comment: 12 pages, 3 fig pages, to appear in the Astrophys.
Red Parkes-Quasars: Evidence for Soft X-ray Absorption
The Parkes Half-Jansky Flat Spectrum Sample contains a large number of
sources with unusually red optical-to-near-infrared continua. If this is to be
interpreted as extinction by dust in the line-of-sight, then associated
material might also give rise to absorption in the soft X-ray regime. This
hypothesis is tested using broadband (0.1-2.4 keV) data from the {\it ROSAT}
All-Sky Survey provided by Siebert et al. (1998). Significant (
confidence level) correlations between optical (and near-infrared)--to--soft
X-ray continuum slope and optical extinction are found in the data, consistent
with absorption by material with metallicity and a range in gas-to-dust ratio
as observed in the local ISM. Under this simple model, the soft X-rays are
absorbed at a level consistent with the range of extinctions (
magnitudes) implied by the observed optical reddening. Excess X-ray absorption

Formal modelling as a component of user centred design
User centred design approaches typically focus understanding on context and producing sketch designs. These sketches are often non functional (e.g., paper) prototypes. They provide a means of exploring candidate design possibilities using techniques such as cooperative evaluation. This paper describes a further step in the process using formal analysis techniques. The sketch design of a device is enhanced into a specification that is then analysed using formal techniques, thus providing a systematic approach to checking plausibility and consistency during early design stages. Once analysed, a further prototype is constructed using an executable form of the specification, providing the next candidate for evaluation with potential users.
