    In some wilderness areas, wildlife encounter vehicles disrupt their behaviour and habitat use. Changing driver behaviour has been proposed where bans on vehicle use are politically unpalatable, but the efficacy of vehicle setbacks and reduced speeds remains largely untested. We characterised bird-vehicle encounters in terms of driver behaviour and the disturbance caused to birds, and tested whether spatial buffers or lower speeds reduced bird escape responses on open beaches. Focal observations showed that: i) most drivers did not create sizeable buffers between their vehicles and birds; ii) bird disturbance was frequent; and iii) predictors of probability of flushing (escape) were setback distance and vehicle type (buses flushed birds at higher rates than cars). Experiments demonstrated that substantial reductions in bird escape responses required buffers to be wide (> 25 m) and vehicle speeds to be slow (< 30 km h-1). Setback distances can reduce impacts on wildlife, provided that they are carefully designed and derived from empirical evidence. No speed or distance combination we tested, however, eliminated bird responses.     Birds in the playground: Evaluating the effectiveness of an urban environmental education project in enhancing school children's awareness, knowledge and attitudes towards local wildlife.

    Children nowadays, particularly in urban areas, are more disconnected from nature than ever before, leading to a large-scale "extinction of experience" with the natural world. Yet there are many potential benefits from children interacting with nature first-hand, including via outdoor learning opportunities. Urban environmental education programmes typically aim to increase awareness and knowledge of local biodiversity and to promote positive attitudes and behaviour towards the environment. However, limited research has been conducted evaluating to what extent these interventions achieve their goals. Here, we explore and assess the influence of a six-week bird-feeding and monitoring project conducted within school grounds ("Bird Buddies") on individual awareness, knowledge and attitudes towards birds by primary school children. This initiative was conducted across eight (sub-)urban primary schools within Brighton and Hove (UK), with 220 participating children (aged 7 to 10). Via pre- and post-project questionnaires, we found evidence for enhanced awareness of local biodiversity, alongside significant gains in both bird identification knowledge and attitudes, which were greatest for children with little prior exposure to nature. Many children expressed a keenness to continue improving the environmental value of their school grounds and to apply elements of the project at home. Student project evaluation scores were consistently positive. Mirroring this, participating teachers endorsed the project as a positive learning experience for their students. One year after the project, several schools were continuing to feed and watch birds. Collectively, the findings from this study highlight the multiple benefits that can be derived from engagement with a relatively short outdoor environmental activity. We therefore believe that such interventions, if repeated locally/longer term, could enhance children's experience with nature in urban settings with combined positive environmental impact

    UNLABELLED: The outcome of hematopoietic cell transplantation for hematologic malignancies may be improved by delivering targeted radiation to hematopoietic organs while relatively sparing nontarget organs. We evaluated the biodistribution of 111In-labeled anti-CD45 antibody in humans using the rat IgG2a monoclonal antibody YAML568 that recognizes a common CD45 epitope present on all human leukocytes. METHODS: Eight patients undergoing bone marrow transplantation received YAML568 labeled with 122 +/- 16 MBq of 111In intravenously followed by serial blood sampling, urine collection, and conjugated view planar gamma-camera imaging up to 144 h after injection. Time-activity curves were obtained using region-of-interest analysis in the accumulating organs and residence times were calculated. An estimate for the radiation-absorbed doses for each organ per unit of administered activity of 90Y was calculated using software for internal dose assessment. The first patient received no unlabeled antibody preloading. The second 2 patients received a preloading dose of 10 mg (0.15 mg/kg). The last 5 patients received a preloading dose of 30-47 mg (0.5 mg/kg). RESULTS: No significant administration-related side effects were seen. The 3 patients receiving no antibody or low antibody preloading had an unfavorable biodistribution with a high initial accumulation of activity in the liver (37%) and the spleen (34%). For the patients receiving 0.5-mg/kg antibody preloading, the estimated radiation-absorbed doses for red bone marrow, spleen, liver, kidney, and total body were 6.4 +/- 1.2, 19 +/- 5, 3.9 +/- 1.4, 1.1 +/- 0.4, and 0.6 +/- 0.1 mGy/MBq, respectively, demonstrating preferential red marrow targeting. A linear regression model showed that the amount of unlabeled antibody preloading per body weight has a strong influence on the estimated red marrow absorbed dose (P = 0.003, R2 = 0.80). CONCLUSION: This study shows that the anti-CD45 monoclonal antibody YAML568 is suitable for delivering selectively radiation to hematopoietic tissues when labeled with 90Y provided that a preloading dose of about 0.5 mg/kg unlabeled antibody is given

    A meta-analysis of correlated behaviours with implications for behavioural syndromes: Mean effect size, publication bias, phylogenetic effects and the role of mediator variables

    In evolutionary and behavioural ecology, increasing attention is being paid to the fact that functionally distinct behaviours are often not independent from each other. Such phenomenon is labelled as behavioural syndrome and is usually demonstrated by phenotypic correlations between behaviours like activity, exploration, aggression and risk-taking across individuals in a population. However, published studies disagree on the strength, and even on the existence of such relationships. To make general inferences from this mixed evidence, we quantitatively reviewed the literature using modern meta-analytic approaches. Based on a large dataset, we investigated the overall relationship between behaviours that are expected to form a syndrome and tested which factors can mediate heterogeneities in study outcomes. The average strength of the phenotypic correlation between behaviours was weak; we found no effect of the phylogeny of species but did observe significant publication bias. However, even accounting for this bias, the mean effect size was positive and statistically different from zero (r = 0. 198). Effect sizes showed considerable heterogeneity within species, implying a role for population-specific adaptation to environmental factors and/or between-study differences in research design. There was a significant positive association between absolute effect size and repeatability of behaviours, suggesting that within-individual variation of behavioural traits can set up an upper limit for the strength of the detected phenotypic correlations. Moreover, spatial overlap between the contexts in which different behaviours were assayed increased the magnitude of the association. The small effect size for the focal relationship implies that a huge sample size would be required to demonstrate a correlation between behaviours with sufficient statistical power, which is fulfilled only in very few studies. This suggests that behavioural syndromes often remain undetected and unpublished. Collectively, our meta-analysis revealed a number of points that might be worth to consider in the future study of behavioural syndromes. © 2012 The Author(s).Peer Reviewe
