Work stress and cancer researchers : an exploration of the challenges, experiences and training needs of UK cancer researchers.
Work stress is a significant issue for many UK healthcare professionals, in particular those working in the field of oncology. However, there have been very few attempts to explore the challenges, experiences or training needs of researchers working in cancer research. In doing so, we will be better positioned to support and develop these researchers.
18 UK oncology researchers from a variety of backgrounds took part in a semi-structured interview. Interviews were transcribed and analysed using thematic analysis.
The analysis identified two overarching themes: logistical research issues (workload, accessing/ recruiting participants, finances) and sensitive research issues (emotional demands, professional boundaries, sensitivity around recruitment). One cross-cutting theme, supportive strategies (support and training, coping mechanisms), was seen to influence both logistical and sensitive research issues. While further research is needed to fully understand the causes and impact of work stress on cancer researchers, three specific issues were highlighted: emotional demands are relevant to quantitative and mixed methods researchers as well as those engaged in qualitative research; the researchers’ background (experience; clinical/non-clinical) was influential and an exploration of effective coping strategies is required; and there is a clear need for adequate support systems and training to be available, particularly for early career researchers.</p
'From Each according to Ability; To Each according to Needs': Origin, Meaning, and Development of Socialist Slogans
There are three slogans in the history of Socialism that are very close in wording, viz. the famous Cabet-Blanc-Marx slogan: "From each according to his ability; To each according to his needs"; the earlier Saint-Simon-Pecqueur slogan: "To each according to his ability; To each according to his works"; and the later slogan in Stalin’s Soviet Constitution: "From each according to his ability; To each according to his work." We will consider the following questions regarding these slogans:
a) What are the earliest occurrences of each of these slogans?
b) Where does the inspiration for each half of each slogan come from?
c) What do the Saint-Simonians mean by “To each according to his ability”?
d) What do they mean by “To each according to his works”?
e) What motivates the shift from “To each according to his ability” to “From each according to his ability”?
f) How should we envisage the progression toward “To each according to his needs”?
g) What is the distinction between from “To each according to his works” and “To each according to his work”

Coreference resolution in clinical discharge summaries, progress notes, surgical and pathology reports: a unified lexical approach
We developed a lexical rule-based system that uses a unified approach to resolving coreference across a wide variety of clinical records comprising discharge summaries, progress notes, pathology, radiology and surgical reports from two corpora (Ontology Development and Information Extraction (ODIE) and i2b2/VA) provided for the fifth i2b2/VA shared task. Taking the unweighted mean between 4 coreference metrics, validation of the system against the i2b2/VA corpus attained an overall F-score of 87.7% across all mention classes, with a maximum of 93.1% for coreference of persons, and a minimum of 77.2% for coreference of tests. For the ODIE corpus the overall F-score across all mention classes was 79.4%, with a maximum of 82.0% for coreference of persons and a minimum of 13.1% for coreference of diagnostic reagents. For the ODIE corpus our results are comparable to the mean reported inter-annotator agreement with the gold standard. We discuss the four categories of errors we identified, and how these might be addressed. The system uses a number of reusable modules and techniques that may be of benefit to the research community
1987 Oregon Vineyard and Winery Report
This document is the first comprehensive report of a survey on Oregon\u27s wine grape industry. The report provides an inventory of vineyard plantings and a detailed summary of the 1987 crop and winery production
1988 Oregon Vineyard Report
This statewide survey report on vineyards in Oregon covers bearing and nonbearing acres, size of vineyard operation, variety and county, size distribution, prices, and yields. The report also contains some comparisons of data for 1987 and 1988. According to this report, Oregon wine grape acreage was up but overall production was down in 1988, the result of a lower yield per acre than in the prior year
The research program of the Liquid Scintillation Detector (LSD) in the Mont Blanc Laboratory
A massive (90 tons) liquid scintillation detector (LSD) has been running since October 1984 in the Mont Blanc Laboratory at a depth of 5,200 hg/sq cm of standard rock. The research program of the experiment covers a variety of topics in particle physics and astrophysics. The performance of the detector, the main fields of research are presented and the preliminary results are discussed
2001 Oregon Vineyard and Winery Report
This statewide survey report on vineyards and wineries in Oregon covers bearing and nonbearing acres, size of vineyard operation, variety and county, size distribution, prices, yields, crush, inventory, and sales. The report also contains some comparisons of data for 2000 and 2001. According to this report, metrics increased across a number of industry benchmarks, including acres harvested and cooperage capacity
