Present and future self in memory: the role of vmPFC in the self-reference effect

Self-related information is remembered better than other-related information (self-reference effect; SRE), a phenomenon that has been convincingly linked to the medial prefrontal cortex. It is not clear whether information related to our future self would also have a privileged status in memory, as medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) regions respond less to the future than to the present self, as if it were an 'other'. Here we ask whether the integrity of the ventral mPFC (vmPFC) is necessary for the emergence of the present and future SRE, if any. vmPFC patients and brain-damaged and healthy controls judged whether each of a series of trait adjectives was descriptive of their present self, future self, another person and that person in the future and later recognized studied traits among distractors. Information relevant to the present (vs future) was generally recognized better, across groups. However, whereas healthy and brain-damaged controls exhibited strong present and future SREs, these were absent in vmPFC patients, who concomitantly showed reduced certainty about their own present and anticipated traits compared to the control groups. These findings indicate that vmPFC is necessary to impart a special mnemonic status to self-related information, including our envisioned future self, possibly by instantiating the self-schema

The EU-funded CAMERA (Coordination and Support Action for Mobility in Europe: Research and Assessment) project is coordinated by The Innaxis Foundation and Research Institute (Spain), in partnership with the University of Westminster (UK), Bauhaus Luftfahrt (Germany), EUROCONTROL (France-Belgium) and DeepBlue (Italy). It was launched in November 2017 for a duration of 48 months. The project investigates research initiatives into the European transport system from 2007, with a special focus on air travel, its integration with other transport modes, and passenger experience. Each year CAMERA assesses projects from different research programmes to deliver a European view of the state of aviation and mobility-related research activities. For this, the team relies on two main corner stones to its project approach: 1) the systematic development of a Performance Framework to provide a means of measuring; and 2) state-of-the-art algorithms for an automated analysis of the research projects

The year 2020 will be marked in world health history due to the COVID-19 pandemic, caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus or a new coronavirus. Among the actions taken by international health authorities, the most important and impacting is social isolation. The measure, fundamental to combat the advance of the pandemic, brings with it many expected consequences in the economic and social field, such as the increase of misery and hunger. This article seeks to problematize this issue from the political and technical aspect of food and nutrition security policies. It rescues the different contexts of the country's fight and actions against hunger, culminating in the current situation of social policies secondarization in the country. It presents several potentialities of the existing programs on the public agenda as a way of mitigating the consequences of hunger, also suggesting adaptations in its implementations in the pandemic context. Finally, the role of the State as a protagonist in combating hunger and reducing poverty in the country is reinforced in a structural way, assuming the strengthening of the existing social policies.O ano de 2020 ficará marcado pela história sanitária mundial devido à pandemia de COVID-19, provocada pelo vírus SARS-CoV-2, ou o novo coronavírus.

The chronic venous leg ulcer is the major therapeutic problem of lower limb injuries, which can trigger changes in the daily life of the person affected by it. This study aimed to understand the daily life of men who lives with chronic venous ulcers. A phenomenological study was conducted with eight men, who were interviewed during June and July of 2012. The study asked questions related to: "Restrictions in social life" and "Recovering the skin integrity and restart the activities affected by the wound". The answers revealed that men with these ulcers have social implications in the areas of productivity and sexuality. This leads to restrictions in everyday life with loss in performance of socially established roles for men, leading to anxiety for his return at full performance of his social role. The findings suggest significant experiential aspects that may guide professionals in the planning and implementation of health actions aimed to treat these patients.

The whole is greater than the sum of the parts: Recognising missed opportunities for an optimal response to the rapidly maturing TB-HIV co-epidemic in South Africa

Abstract

Background

Despite widely acknowledged WHO guidelines for the integration of TB and HIV services, heavily burdened countries have been slow to implement these and thus significant missed opportunities have arisen.

Discussion

The individual-centred, rights-based paradigm of the SA National AIDS Policy, remains dissonant with the compelling public-health approach of TB control. The existence of independent and disconnected TB and HIV services results in a wastage of scarce health resources, an increased burden on patients' time and finances, and ignores evidence of patients' preference for an integrated service. The current situation translates into a web of unacceptable, ongoing missed opportunities such as failure to maximize collaborative disease surveillance, VCT, adherence support, infection control, and positive prevention. TB services present a readily identifiable cohort for HIV provider-initiated testing. Integrating HAART and DOTS will promote efficient usage of health workers' time and a more navigable experience for patients, ultimately ensuring increased TB treatment completion rates and MDR-TB prevention. As direct observation evolves into a more supportive, empowering experience for patients, adherence to both TB drugs and HAART will be bolstered. Little attention has been paid to the transmission of TB within HIV services. Low cost infection control interventions include: triaging patients, scheduling new and follow-up patients separately; well-ventilated, sheltered waiting rooms; and the use of personal respirators by patients and staff. A more patient-centred approach to TB care may be able to recruit the active participation of TB patients in positive prevention efforts, including maximizing personal infection control, limiting exposure of social contacts to TB during the intensive phase of treatment, advocating isoniazid prophylaxis within the home and patient-centred education efforts to reduce overall transmission. Several model programmes demonstrated synergy, in which the impact of the "whole" or integrated response was greater than the sum of the non-integrated parts.

Summary

The full potential of an integrated TB-HIV service has not been fully harvested. Missed opportunities discount existing efforts in both programmes, will perpetuate the burden of disease, and prevent major gains in future interventions. This paper outlines simple, readily-implementable strategies to narrow the gap and reclaim existing missed opportunities.</p
