    A Review and Gap Analysis of Exploiting Aerodynamic Forces as a Means to Control Satellite Formation Flight

    Using several small, unconnected satellites flying in formation rather than a single monolithic satellite has many advantages. As an example, separate optical systems can be combined to function as a single larger (synthetic) aperture. When the aperture is synthesized, the independent optical systems are phased to form a common image field with its resolution determined by the maximum dimension of the array. Hence, a formation is capable of much finer resolution than it could be accomplished by any single element. In order for the formation to maintain its intended design despite present perturbations (formation keeping), to perform rendezvous maneuvers or to change the formation design (reconfiguration) control forces need to be generated. To this day, using chemical and/or electric thrusters are the methods of choice. However, their utilization has detrimental effects on small satellites’ limited mass, volume and power budgets. In the mid-eighties, Caroline Lee Leonard published her pioneering work [1] proving the potential of using differential drag as a means of propellant-less source of control for satellite formation flight. This method consists of varying the aerodynamic drag experienced by different spacecraft, thus generating differential accelerations between them. Since its control authority is limited to the in-plane motion, Horsley [2] proposed to use differential lift as a means to control the out-of-plane motion. Due to its promising benefits, a variety of studies from researches around the world have enhanced Leonard’s work over past decades which results in a multitude of available literature. Besides giving an introduction into the method the major contributions of this paper is twofold: first, an extensive literature review of the major contributions which led to the current state-of-the-art of different lift and drag based satellite formation control is presented. Second, based on these insights key knowledge gaps that need to be addressed in order to enhance the current state-of-the-art are revealed and discussed. In closer detail, the interdependence between the feasibility domain and advanced satellite surface materials as well as the necessity of robust control methods able to cope with the occurring uncertainties is assessed.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version

Its main disadvantage, that its controllability is mainly limited to the in-plain relative motion, can be overcome using differential lift as a means to control the out-of-plane motion. Due to its promising benefits, a variety of studies from researchers around the world have enhanced the state-of-the-art over the past decades which results in a multitude of available literature. In this paper, an extensive literature review of the efforts which led to the current state-of-the-art of different lift and drag-based satellite formation control is presented. Based on the insights gained during the review process, key knowledge gaps that need to be addressed in the field of differential lift to enhance the current state-of-the-art are revealed and discussed.     System analysis and test-bed for an atmosphere-breathing electric propulsion system using an inductive plasma thruster

    Challenging space mission scenarios include those in very low Earth orbits, where the atmosphere creates significant drag to the S/C and forces their orbit to an early decay. For drag compensation, propulsion systems are needed, requiring propellant to be carried on-board. An atmosphere-breathing electric propulsion system (ABEP) ingests the residual atmosphere through an intake and uses it as propellant for an electric thruster. Theoretically applicable to any planet with atmosphere, the system might allow drag compensation for an unlimited time without carrying propellant. A new range of altitudes for continuous operation would become accessible, enabling new scientific missions while reducing costs. Preliminary studies have shown that the collectible propellant flow for an ion thruster (in LEO) might not be enough, and that electrode erosion due to aggressive gases, such as atomic oxygen, will limit the thruster’s lifetime. In this paper we introduce the use of an inductive plasma thruster (IPT) as thruster for the ABEP system as well as the assessment of this technology against its major competitors in VLEO (electrical and chemical propulsion). IPT is based on a small scale inductively heated plasma generator IPG6-S. These devices have the advantage of being electrodeless, and have already shown high electric-to-thermal coupling efficiencies using O2 and CO2 as propellant. A water cooled nozzle has been developed and applied to IPG6-S. The system analysis is integrated with IPG6-S equipped with the nozzle for testing to assess mean mass-specific energies of the plasma plume and estimate exhaust velocities.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version

    Application of Multicanonical Multigrid Monte Carlo Method to the Two-Dimensional ϕ4\phi^4-Model: Autocorrelations and Interface Tension

    We discuss the recently proposed multicanonical multigrid Monte Carlo method and apply it to the scalar ϕ4\phi^4-model on a square lattice. To investigate the performance of the new algorithm at the field-driven first-order phase transitions between the two ordered phases we carefully analyze the autocorrelations of the Monte Carlo process. Compared with standard multicanonical simulations a real-time improvement of about one order of magnitude is established.     Transferring biodiversity-ecosystem function research to the management of ‘real-world’ ecosystems

    Biodiversity-ecosystem functioning (BEF) research grew rapidly following concerns that biodiversity loss would negatively affect ecosystem functions and the ecosystem services they underpin. However, despite evidence that biodiversity strongly affects ecosystem functioning, the influence of BEF research upon policy and the management of ‘real-world’ ecosystems, i.e., semi-natural habitats and agroecosystems, has been limited. Here, we address this issue by classifying BEF research into three clusters based on the degree of human control over species composition and the spatial scale, in terms of grain, of the study, and discussing how the research of each cluster is best suited to inform particular fields of ecosystem management. Research in the first cluster, small-grain highly controlled studies, is best able to provide general insights into mechanisms and to inform the management of species-poor and highly managed systems such as croplands, plantations, and the restoration of heavily degraded ecosystems. Research from the second cluster, small-grain observational studies, and species removal and addition studies, may allow for direct predictions of the impacts of species loss in specific semi-natural ecosystems. Research in the third cluster, large-grain uncontrolled studies, may best inform landscape-scale management and national-scale policy. We discuss barriers to transfer within each cluster and suggest how new research and knowledge exchange mechanisms may overcome these challenges. To meet the potential for BEF research to address global challenges, we recommend transdisciplinary research that goes beyond these current clusters and considers the social-ecological context of the ecosystems in which BEF knowledge is generated. This requires recognizing the social and economic value of biodiversity for ecosystem services at scales, and in units, that matter to land managers and policy makers.</p

    Electric propulsion systems are an efficient option for altitude/attitude control and orbit transfers of spacecraft. One example is the gridded ion thruster which ionizes the propellant and accelerates the ions of the generated plasma by a high-voltage grid system. This work deals with the numerical simulation of the plasma flow starting near the grid system in the ionization chamber and leaving the thruster with high velocity. These simulations give direct insight into the modeled, physical interrelationships and can be used to investigate questions arising in the industrial development process of ion propulsion systems. The required simulation method is challenging due to the high degree of flow rarefaction and the plasma state itself, including freely moving ions and electrons. Applicable simulation methods belong to a particle-based, gas-kinetic approach, such as Particle-In-Cell (PIC) for the simulation of electromagnetic interaction and the Direct Simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) for inter-particle collisions. The effects resulting from the finite size of a real system can only be investigated by simulating the complete, three-dimensional thruster geometry which requires a large and complex simulation domain. Acceptable simulation times are realized by expanding and using the framework of the coupled PIC-DSMC code PICLas in combination with high performance computing systems

    Significance Ecological research suggests that greater biodiversity could lead to greater economic value, even for private owners of “working” land. However, the studies from which such a conclusion might be inferred do not account for all relevant information in a coherent economic framework. Our paper applies standard economic theory to rigorously account for costs, quality, and risk. Results indicate that higher levels of biodiversity than are typically observed on commercial grasslands would maximize landowner value in the experimental grassland we study. Greater private benefits from biodiversity could encourage private investment in biodiversity and reduce the cost of public conservation efforts.</jats:p

    The biodiversity–ecosystem functioning (BEF) literature provides strong evidence of the biophysical basis for the potential profitability of greater diversity but does not address questions of optimal management. BEF studies typically focus on the ecosystem outputs produced by randomly assembled communities that only differ in their biodiversity levels, measured by indices such as species richness. Landholders, however, do not randomly select species to plant; they choose particular species that collectively maximize profits. As such, their interest is not in comparing the average performance of randomly assembled communities at each level of biodiversity but rather comparing the best-performing communities at each diversity level. Assessing the best-performing mixture requires detailed accounting of species’ identities and relative abundances. It also requires accounting for the financial cost of individual species’ seeds, and the economic value of changes in the quality, quantity, and variability of the species’ collective output—something that existing multifunctionality indices fail to do. This study presents an assessment approach that integrates the relevant factors into a single, coherent framework. It uses ecological production functions to inform an economic model consistent with the utility-maximizing decisions of a potentially risk-averse private landowner. We demonstrate the salience and applicability of the framework using data from an experimental grassland to estimate production relationships for hay and carbon storage. For that case, our results suggest that even a risk-neutral, profit-maximizing landowner would favor a highly diverse mix of species, with optimal species richness falling between the low levels currently found in commercial grasslands and the high levels found in natural grasslands
