Drug-Induced Hematologic Syndromes
Objective. Drugs can induce almost the entire spectrum of hematologic disorders, affecting white cells, red cells, platelets, and the coagulation system. This paper aims to emphasize the broad range of drug-induced hematological syndromes and to highlight some of the newer drugs and syndromes.
Methods. Medline literature on drug-induced hematologic syndromes was reviewed. Most reports and reviews focus on individual drugs or cytopenias. Results. Drug-induced syndromes include hemolytic anemias, methemoglobinemia, red cell aplasia, sideroblastic anemia, megaloblastic anemia, polycythemia, aplastic anemia, leukocytosis, neutropenia, eosinophilia, immune thrombocytopenia, microangiopathic syndromes, hypercoagulability, hypoprothrombinemia, circulating anticoagulants, myelodysplasia, and acute leukemia. Some of the classic drugs known to cause hematologic abnormalities have been replaced by newer drugs, including biologics, accompanied by their own syndromes and unintended side effects. Conclusions. Drugs can induce toxicities spanning many hematologic syndromes, mediated by a variety of mechanisms. Physicians need to be alert to the potential for iatrogenic drug-induced hematologic complications
The phylogenetic affinities of the extinct glyptodonts
Among the fossils of hitherto unknown mammals that Darwin collected in South America between 1832 and 1833 during the Beagle expedition [1] were examples of the large, heavily armored herbivores later known as glyptodonts. Ever since, glyptodonts have fascinated evolutionary biologists because of their remarkable skeletal adaptations and seemingly isolated phylogenetic position even within their natural group, the cingulate xenarthrans (armadillos and their allies [2]). In possessing a carapace comprised of fused osteoderms, the glyptodonts were clearly related to other cingulates, but their precise phylogenetic position as suggested by morphology remains unresolved [3,4]. To provide a molecular perspective on this issue, we designed sequence-capture baits using in silico reconstructed ancestral sequences and successfully assembled the complete mitochondrial genome of Doedicurus sp., one of the largest glyptodonts. Our phylogenetic reconstructions establish that glyptodonts are in fact deeply nested within the armadillo crown-group, representing a distinct subfamily (Glyptodontinae) within family Chlamyphoridae [5]. Molecular dating suggests that glyptodonts diverged no earlier than around 35 million years ago, in good agreement with their fossil record. Our results highlight the derived nature of the glyptodont morphotype, one aspect of which is a spectacular increase in body size until their extinction at the end of the last ice age.Facultad de Ciencias Naturales y Muse
Development of Micromorph Cells in Large-Area Industrial Reactor
The influences of the deposition pressure and silane depletion on the efficiency of single-junction microcrystalline silicon solar cells has been investigated. The efficiency is found to correlate with the ion energy which affects the density of states in the absorber material. Cell with efficiency of 7.3% at a deposition rate of 1 nm/s, and, respectively, 7.8% at 0.35 nm/s were deposited in R&D KAI M industrial reactor. Silicon oxide based intermediate reflector layers were developed in KAI reactor for incorporation in micromorph devices. Material with an index of refraction of 1.7 at 600 nm and low lateral conductivity were deposited. Micromorph devices incorporating these intermediate reflector layers were fabricated with initial efficiency of 12.3% at a deposition rate of 0.35 nm/s and 10.8% at 1 nm/s
Cube Testers and Key Recovery Attacks On Reduced-Round MD6 and Trivium
CRYPTO 2008 saw the introduction of the hash function
MD6 and of cube attacks, a type of algebraic attack applicable to cryptographic
functions having a low-degree algebraic normal form over GF(2).
This paper applies cube attacks to reduced round MD6, finding the full
128-bit key of a 14-round MD6 with complexity 2^22 (which takes less
than a minute on a single PC). This is the best key recovery attack announced
so far for MD6. We then introduce a new class of attacks called
cube testers, based on efficient property-testing algorithms, and apply
them to MD6 and to the stream cipher Trivium. Unlike the standard
cube attacks, cube testers detect nonrandom behavior rather than performing
key extraction, but they can also attack cryptographic schemes
described by nonrandom polynomials of relatively high degree. Applied
to MD6, cube testers detect nonrandomness over 18 rounds in 2^17 complexity;
applied to a slightly modified version of the MD6 compression
function, they can distinguish 66 rounds from random in 2^24 complexity.
Cube testers give distinguishers on Trivium reduced to 790 rounds from
random with 2^30 complexity and detect nonrandomness over 885 rounds
in 2^27, improving on the original 767-round cube attack
Selecting ecosystem indicators for fisheries targeting highly migratory species: An EU project to advance the operationalization of the EAFM in ICCAT and IOTC
Several international legal agreements and guidelines have set the minimum standards and key principles to guide the implementation of an
ecosystem approach to fisheries management (EAFM). However, the implementation of an EAFM in tuna Regional Fisheries Management
Organizations (RFMOs) has been patchy and lack a long-term plan, vision and guidance on how to operationalize it. The Specific Contract N0
2 “selecting ecosystem indicators for fisheries targeting highly migratory species-” (SC02 project) under the Framework Contract - EASME/
EMFF/2016/008 provisions of Scientific Advice for Fisheries Beyond EU Waters- addresses several scientific challenges and provides insights
to support the implementation of an EAFM through collaboration and consultation with the International Commission for the Conservation of
Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT) and the Indian Ocean Tuna Commission (IOTC). Specifically, this project first highlights properties of success and best
practices from other regions of the world in operationalizing the ecosystem approach that potentially could be transferred to ICCAT and IOTC.
Second, it delivered a list of potential ecosystem indicators of relevance to tuna RFMOs (ICCAT and IOTC) that are suitable to track the
impacts of fisheries targeting tuna and tuna-like species on the broader pelagic ecosystem. Third, it designed a general framework based on a
rule-based decision tree to provide guidance on how reference points could be set and used for diverse types of ecosystem indicators. Fourth,
it proposed candidate ecoregions within the Atlantic and Indian Oceans which could be used to guide region-based ecosystem plans,
assessments and research to ultimately provide better ecosystem-based advice to inform fisheries management. Fifth, it developed two pilot
ecosystem plans for two case study regions, the tropical ecoregion within the ICCAT convention area, and the temperate ecoregion within the
IOTC convention area. At this stage, these pilot ecosystem plans aim to create awareness about the need for ecosystem planning, start a
discussion about the elements that need to be part of a planning process, and initiate a discussion in ICCAT and IOTC about the potential
needs of ecosystem plans and their function. Finally, this project provided recommendations to foster the potential development, use, and
implementation of ecosystem plans in ICCAT and IOTC

Postattenuation neurologic signs after surgical attenuation of congenital portosystemic shunts in dogs:A review
The development of postattenuation neurologic signs (PANS) is a poorly understood and potentially devastating complication after surgical attenuation of congenital portosystemic shunts in dogs. Postattenuation neurologic signs include seizures but also more subtle neurologic signs such as depression, behavioral changes, tremors, and twitching. They most commonly occur within 7 days postoperatively and are typically unrelated to hyperammonemia, hypoglycemia, or electrolyte disturbances. This narrative review summarizes the findings of 50 publications from 1988-2020 that report occurrence of PANS. While most published reports included only dogs affected by postattenuation seizures (PAS), others included dogs with any form of PANS. Overall, PANS (including PAS) affected 1.6%-27.3% of dogs, whereas incidence of PAS ranged from 0%-18.2%. The etiology of PANS remains unknown; however, several theories have been proposed. Risk factors include preoperative hepatic encephalopathy, increasing age, and possibly certain breeds and extrahepatic shunt morphology. There is increasing evidence that prophylactic antiepileptic drugs do not prevent PANS. Treatment is centered around controlling neurologic signs with antiepileptic drugs and providing supportive intensive care. The 30-day survival rate in studies that included a minimum of four dogs affected by PANS was 0%-100% (median, 50.0%) and 0%-75.0% (median, 37.5%) for those with PAS. Mortality associated with PANS was typically related to occurrence of generalized seizure activity. Prognostic factors positively associated with short-term survival included having a history of preoperative seizures and development of focal seizures only. If affected dogs survived to discharge, survival for several years was possible, and the majority of neurologic signs manifested as part of the phenomenon of PANS appeared to resolve
The effect of prophylactic treatment with levetiracetam on the incidence of post-attenuation seizures in dogs undergoing surgical management of single congenital extrahepatic portosystemic shunts
Objectives: To report (1) the incidence of post-attenuation seizures (PAS) in dogs that underwent single congenital extrahepatic portosystemic shunt (cEHPSS) attenuation and (2) to compare incidence of PAS in dogs that either did or did not receive prophylactic treatment with levetiracetam (LEV).Study Design: Multi-institutional retrospective study.Sample Population: Nine-hundred-and-forty dogs.Methods: Medical records were reviewed to identify dogs that underwent surgical attenuation of a single cEHPSS from January 2005 through July 2017 and developed PAS within seven days postoperatively. Dogs were divided into three groups: no LEV (LEV-); LEV at >15mg/kg TID for >24 hours or a 60mg/kg intravenous loading dose preoperatively, followed by >15mg/kg TID postoperatively (LEV1); ); and LEV at less than 15mg/kg TID, for less than 24 hours preoperatively, or continued at less than 15mg/kg TID postoperatively (LEV2).Results: Nine-hundred-and-forty dogs were included. Seventy-five (8.0%) developed PAS. Incidence of PAS was 35/523 (6.7%), 21/188 (11.2%) and 19/228 (8.3%) in groups LEV-, LEV1 and LEV2, respectively. This difference was not statistically significant (p=0.14). No significant differences between groups of dogs that seized with respect to variables investigated were identified.Conclusions: The overall incidence of PAS was low (8%). Prophylactic treatment with LEV according to the protocols investigated in our study was not associated with a reduced incidence of PAS.Clinical Significance: Prophylactic treatment with LEV does not afford protection against development of PAS. Surgically treated dogs should continue to be monitored closely during the first seven days postoperatively for seizures
A 32‐society investigation of the influence of perceived economic inequality on social class stereotyping
There is a growing body of work suggesting that social class stereotypes are amplified when people perceive higher levels of economic inequality—that is, the wealthy are perceived as more competent and assertive and the poor as more incompetent and unassertive. The present study tested this prediction in 32 societies and also examines the role of wealth-based categorization in explaining this relationship. We found that people who perceived higher economic inequality were indeed more likely to consider wealth as a meaningful basis for categorization. Unexpectedly, however, higher levels of perceived inequality were associated with perceiving the wealthy as less competent and assertive and the poor as more competent and assertive. Unpacking this further, exploratory analyses showed that the observed tendency to stereotype the wealthy negatively only emerged in societies with lower social mobility and democracy and higher corruption. This points to the importance of understanding how socio-structural features that co-occur with economic inequality may shape perceptions of the wealthy and the poor.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
