    Maternal Hypothyroxinemia During Pregnancy and Growth of the Fetal and Infant Head

    Severe maternal thyroid dysfunction during pregnancy affects fetal brain growth and corticogenesis. This study focused on the effect of maternal hypothyroxinemia during early pregnancy on growth of the fetal and infant head. In a population-based birth cohort, we assessed thyroid status in early pregnancy (median 13.4, 90% range 10.8-17.2), in 4894 women, and measured the prenatal and postnatal head size of their children at 5 time points. Hypothyroxinemia was defined as normal thyroid-stimulating hormone levels and free thyroxine-4 concentrations below the 10th percentile. Statistical analysis was performed using linear generalized estimating equation. Maternal hypothyroxinemia was associated with larger fetal and infant head size (overall estimate beta: 1.38, 95% confidence interval 0.56; 2.19, P = .001). In conclusion, in the general population, even small variations in maternal thyroid function during pregnancy may affect the developing head of the young child

    A leverage points perspective on Arctic Indigenous food systems research: A systematic review

    Arctic food systems are increasingly challenged by rapid climate change, loss of food security and subsequent weakening of food sovereignty, and destabilization of Indigenous practices. Despite growing scientific knowledge on Arctic food systems, Indigenous communities continue to struggle with a plethora of sustainability challenges. To develop a systemic understanding of these challenges, we performed a systematic review of 526 articles published between 1998 and 2021 on Arctic Indigenous food systems. We used the leverage points framework to structure our analysis to understand to what extent the existing Western scientific body of literature provides the necessary knowledge to understand the food system characteristics that give rise to the current sustainability challenges. We combined deductive qualitative and inductive quantitative approaches to identify gaps in the systemic understanding of Arctic Indigenous food systems. We characterized existing research across the four levels of systemic depth—parameters, feedbacks, design, intent—and identified promising directions for future research. Our analyses show that research on food systems is clustered within six main domains, we term environmental contaminants, diet and health, food security, food culture and economy, changing socio-ecological systems and marine and coast. Based on our analysis, we identify three directions for future research that we believe to be of particular importance to enable sustainability transformations of Arctic Indigenous food systems: (i) the decolonization of research practices, (ii) acknowledging the significance of systemic interdependencies across shallow and deep leverage points, and (iii) transdisciplinary action-oriented research collaborations directing transformative system interventions

    Epigenetics and developmental programming of welfare and production traits in farm animals

    The concept that postnatal health and development can be influenced by events that occur in utero originated from epidemiological studies in humans supported by numerous mechanistic (including epigenetic) studies in a variety of model species. Referred to as the ‘developmental origins of health and disease’ or ‘DOHaD’ hypothesis, the primary focus of large-animal studies until quite recently had been biomedical. Attention has since turned towards traits of commercial importance in farm animals. Herein we review the evidence that prenatal risk factors, including suboptimal parental nutrition, gestational stress, exposure to environmental chemicals and advanced breeding technologies, can determine traits such as postnatal growth, feed efficiency, milk yield, carcass composition, animal welfare and reproductive potential. We consider the role of epigenetic and cytoplasmic mechanisms of inheritance, and discuss implications for livestock production and future research endeavours. We conclude that although the concept is proven for several traits, issues relating to effect size, and hence commercial importance, remain. Studies have also invariably been conducted under controlled experimental conditions, frequently assessing single risk factors, thereby limiting their translational value for livestock production. We propose concerted international research efforts that consider multiple, concurrent stressors to better represent effects of contemporary animal production systems

    The usefulness of autonomy A different view of M.W. Beijerinck's microbiology In the late 19th century bacteriology was a predominantly practical discipline. Beijerinck was among the few workers who engaged in pure microbiological research at this time. He is usually regarded as the 'founding father' of the Delft tradition in chemical bacteriology. Beijerinck's focus, however, was not chemical bacteriology, but heredity and variability in microorganisms. His pertinent views provide an instance of the 19th-century 'developmental' view of heredity and evolution.As for the wider context of Beijerinck's work, there are important similarities between Beijerinck and Hugo de Vries. In the 1890s de Vries became a spokesman for the promotion of pure science as the motor of social progress. His final aim was the improvement of practice. According to Beijerinck, successful practice in microbiology also hinged upon detailed knowledge of heredity and variability. Beijerinck and de Vries were agreed however that scientific research should remain pure; the benefits for practice would follow automatically.Beijerinck did not, decades ahead of others, start a tradition in bacterial chemistry. Nor should he be seen as an early worker groping unsuccessfully around in the confused field of bacterial genetics. In his approach and problem choice he followed contemporary examples, and he worked within the context of an ideology that was shared by the leading Dutch botanists
