Spin Hall effect due to intersubband-induced spin-orbit interaction in symmetric quantum wells
We investigate the intrinsic spin Hall effect in two-dimensional electron
gases in quantum wells with two subbands, where a new intersubband-induced
spin-orbit coupling is operative. The bulk spin Hall conductivity
is calculated in the ballistic limit within the standard Kubo
formalism in the presence of a magnetic field and is found to remain finite
in the B=0 limit, as long as only the lowest subband is occupied. Our
calculated exhibits a nonmonotonic behavior and can change its
sign as the Fermi energy (the carrier areal density ) is varied between
the subband edges. We determine the magnitude of for realistic
InSb quantum wells by performing a self-consistent calculation of the
intersubband-induced spin-orbit coupling.Comment: 7 pages, 3 figure
Entanglement properties of optical coherent states under amplitude damping
Through concurrence, we characterize the entanglement properties of optical
coherent-state qubits subject to an amplitude damping channel. We investigate
the distillation capabilities of known error correcting codes and obtain upper
bounds on the entanglement depending on the non-orthogonality of the coherent
states and the channel damping parameter. This work provides a first, full
quantitative analysis of these photon-loss codes which are naturally
reminiscent of the standard qubit codes against Pauli errors.Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures. Revised version with small corrections; main

Evolution of Coordination in Social Networks: A Numerical Study
Coordination games are important to explain efficient and desirable social
behavior. Here we study these games by extensive numerical simulation on
networked social structures using an evolutionary approach. We show that local
network effects may promote selection of efficient equilibria in both pure and
general coordination games and may explain social polarization. These results
are put into perspective with respect to known theoretical results. The main
insight we obtain is that clustering, and especially community structure in
social networks has a positive role in promoting socially efficient outcomes.Comment: preprint submitted to IJMP

A Minimal, Unstrained S-Allyl Handle for Pre-Targeting Diels-Alder Bioorthogonal Labeling in Live Cells
The unstrained S-allyl cysteine amino acid was site-specifically installed on apoptosis protein biomarkers and was further used as a chemical handle and ligation partner for 1,2,4,5-tetrazines by means of an inverse-electron-demand Diels-Alder reaction. We demonstrate the utility of this minimal handle for the efficient labeling of apoptotic cells using a fluorogenic tetrazine dye in a pre-targeting approach. The small size, easy chemical installation, and selective reactivity of the S-allyl handle towards tetrazines should be readily extendable to other proteins and biomolecules, which could facilitate their labeling within live cells.China Scholarship Council, FCT Portugal, European Union (Marie-Sklodowska Curie ITN Protein Conjugates; Marie-Sklodowska Curie IEF), MINECO (CTQ2015-70524-R and RYC-2013-14706), Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council, BiFi (Memento cluster), Royal Society, European Research Counci
