    Gardens as Science Learning Contexts Across Educational Stages: Learning Assessment Based on Students' Graphic Representations

    The educational use of daily-life contexts is considered a valuable strategy to promote meaningful science learning, since it facilitates the establishment of connections between previous knowledge, personal interests, and new learning. The aim of this work is to provide evidence to support the presence of gardens at educational centers, by assessing key science topics whose learning is promoted at the pre-school, primary, secondary, and university stages. To this end, we analyzed the paired graphic representations of "a garden" that students drew both before and after their participation in a garden-based learning program. Firstly, we obtained the frequency of appearance of every represented element, and afterward characterized the level of change between paired graphic representations. Sample size was of 24-19-25-29 pairs per stage, respectively. Across all stages, an overall improvement in students' graphic expression was observed, which can be attributed to their experience in the space. At the pre-school stage, the garden favored the establishment of some simple cause-effect relationships which were consolidated at the primary stage, and provided a climate of motivation and affectivity that was evident in the final drawings, given the enormous quantity of details represented, the level of the finished product, and the careful combination and variety of colors. The presence of elements related to water notably increased in final graphic representations from pre-school, primary, and secondary education, thus evidencing that the use of gardens facilitates an approach to responsible water management. At the university stage, students initially demonstrated good knowledge of conventional agriculture, while the gardening experience -which was based on permaculture practices- helped evolve their ideas toward an alternative model of cultivation. The most prevalent science learning across all stages was related to plant knowledge, particularly to their anatomical traits and diversity. Finally, the role of educational gardens as models for students was evidenced, which suggests the importance of teachers and institutions carefully considering which model to offer. Overall, our results support the legitimacy of incorporating gardens to educational centers, particularly for promoting contact with live plants and plant knowledge, and potentially for promoting contact with garden fauna and activities oriented toward learning about it

    An ultrasound-based femoral artery calcification score

    Objective: Duplex ultrasound (US) of the lower extremities is commonly used to assess patients with lower extremity atherosclerosis. Arterial calcification can often be visualized in these images; however, efforts to quantify its extent have been limited. We, thus, sought to develop a new scoring system to measure calcification on duplex US studies of the femoral artery and correlate it with standard computed tomography (CT)-based methods. We then made preliminary attempts to correlate US-based femoral artery calcification scores with limb-specific outcomes in patients with peripheral arterial disease. Methods: Patients who underwent CT evaluation of the lower extremities and arterial duplex US of either lower extremity within 6 months of each examination were included in the study. CT-based calcium scores of the femoral artery were generated using calcium scoring software. To determine the US score, five standard arterial segments (ie, common femoral artery, proximal superficial femoral artery [SFA], mid-SFA, distal SFA, and above the knee popliteal artery) were scored using a scale of 0 to 2 (0, a completely normal vessel segment; 1, a vessel with hyperechoic irregularities of the vessel wall; and 2, clear anechoic shadowing). The available scores were then averaged to yield a single femoral calcium score for each leg. Predictors of femoral calcification scores were then assessed and compared with the CT-based methods. The correlation between the US- and CT-based femoral calcification was assessed, and then the association between the US-based femoral calcification score and limb outcomes was evaluated. Results: A total of 113 patients met the inclusion criteria and were included in the final analysis. US-based calcification scores were increased in patients with diabetes, renal failure, and the presence of chronic limb threatening ischemia similar to CT-based femoral calcification. The US- and CT-based calcification scores showed a moderate to strong correlation (r = 0.64). An elevated US-based femoral artery calcification score was associated with decreased amputation-free survival. Conclusions: A novel US-based method shows promise as a simple method for quantifying the extent of femoral artery calcification in patients with peripheral arterial disease. The US-based method correlates with standard CT-based methods. Preliminary studies show that it could be useful for predicating outcomes for patients with peripheral arterial disease

    Enhancing interdisciplinary climate change work through comprehensive evaluation

    This paper shares the details of an evaluation plan from an interdisciplinary climate change project that developed decision support tools (DSTs) for agricultural advisors and farmers. It showcases how evaluation enhanced the project work by providing opportunities for the team to reflect on and use data to improve performance. The plan included both formative and summative approaches, team member interviews to assess team functioning, usability testing of DSTs, outreach and marketing campaign evaluation. Outreach evaluation included surveying those reached, monitoring project website traffic, and tracking and mapping outreach details. Marketing evaluation included pre-testing campaign materials, assessing open and click rates of email campaign, and monitoring associated traffic to website. The Useful to Usable (U2U) team was generally high functioning, but team interviews allowed the evaluators and leaders to discern factors that were influencing intended outcomes, respond to needs, assign resources, and catalyze activities that were crucial in shaping the outcomes. Usability testing surfaced issues related to default values and search and help features that were addressed by the team and resulted in improved usability. Outreach evaluation found geographic and methodological gaps that were filled, resulting in more target audiences reached and more effective methods used (e.g., hands-on events). Marketing evaluation allowed for improving contact lists over time and improving campaign messaging before deployment. Evaluators and project leaders working on similar projects may adapt or utilize methods detailed in this paper, along with the recommendations, while designing and implementing improvement-oriented evaluation plans
