Astrometry with the Keck-Interferometer: the ASTRA project and its science
The sensitivity and astrometry upgrade ASTRA of the Keck Interferometer is
introduced. After a brief overview of the underlying interferometric
principles, the technology and concepts of the upgrade are presented. The
interferometric dual-field technology of ASTRA will provide the KI with the
means to observe two objects simultaneously, and measure the distance between
them with a precision eventually better than 100 uas. This astrometric
functionality of ASTRA will add a unique observing tool to fields of
astrophysical research as diverse as exo-planetary kinematics, binary
astrometry, and the investigation of stars accelerated by the massive black
hole in the center of the Milky Way as discussed in this contribution.Comment: 22 pages, 10 figures (low resolution), contribution to the

Enhanced production of baryons in high-multiplicity collisions at TeV
The production rate of baryons relative to mesons
in collisions at a center-of-mass energy TeV is measured
by the LHCb experiment. The ratio of to production
cross-sections shows a significant dependence on both the transverse momentum
and the measured charged-particle multiplicity. At low multiplicity, the ratio
measured at LHCb is consistent with the value measured in
collisions, and increases by a factor of with increasing multiplicity.
At relatively low transverse momentum, the ratio of to
cross-sections is higher than what is measured in
collisions, but converges with the ratio as the momentum
increases. These results imply that the evolution of heavy quarks into
final-state hadrons is influenced by the density of the hadronic environment
produced in the collision. Comparisons with a statistical hadronization model
and implications for the mechanisms enforcing quark confinement are discussed.Comment: All figures and tables, along with machine-readable versions and any

Mortality on extreme heat days using official thresholds in Spain: a multi-city time series analysis.
BACKGROUND: The 2003 heat wave had a high impact on mortality in Europe, which made necessary to develop heat health watch warning systems. In Spain this was carried-out by the Ministry of Health in 2004, being based on exceeding of city-specific simultaneous thresholds of minimum and maximum daily temperatures. The aim of this study is to assess effectiveness of the official thresholds established by the Ministry of Health for each provincial capital city, by quantifying and comparing the short-term effects of above-threshold days on total daily mortality. METHODS: Total daily mortality and minimum and maximum temperatures for the 52 capitals of province in Spain were collected during summer months (June to September) for the study period 1995-2004. Data was analysed using GEE for Poisson regression. Relative Risk (RR) of total daily mortality was quantified for the current day of official thresholds exceeded. RESULTS: The number of days in which the thresholds were exceeded show great inconsistency, with provinces with great number of exceeded days adjacent to provinces that did not exceed or rarely exceeded. The average overall excess risk of dying during an extreme heat day was about 25% (RR = 1.24; 95% confidence interval (CI) = [1.19-1.30]). Relative risks showed a significant heterogeneity between cities (I2 = 54.9%). Western situation and low mean summer temperatures were associated with higher relative risks, suggesting thresholds may have been set too high in these areas. CONCLUSIONS: This study confirmed that extreme heat days have a considerable impact on total daily mortality in Spain. Official thresholds gave consistent relative risk in the large capital cities. However, in some other cities thresholds

The Use of Low-Calorie Sweeteners by Children: Implications for Weight Management
The rise in pediatric obesity since the 1970s has been well established in the United States and is becoming a major concern worldwide. As a potential means to help slow the obesity epidemic, low-calorie sweeteners (LCS) have gained attention as dietary tools to assist in adherence to weight loss plans or prevention of excess weight gain. Observational studies tend to show positive correlations between LCS consumption and weight gain in children and adolescents. Although the data are intriguing, these epidemiologic studies do not establish that LCS cause weight gain, because there are likely many lifestyle and genetic differences between children and families who choose to consume LCS and those who do not. Short-term randomized controlled trials have shown LCS use to be BMI neutral or to have modest weightreducing effects in overweight and obese adolescents. The long-term effects of LCS in children and adolescents are unknown. Some compelling research is currently underway and may provide needed insight into the potential role of LCS in weight management. The paucity of data regarding the effects of LCS use in children and adolescents creates challenges in decision-making for health care providers and parents
