    Neutronics analysis of the high-power race target

    In this study, the neutron production of an electron accelerator target is analyzed. A large neutron flux is desired for transmutation research. Previously used targets were tested at 1 kW, but this particular target was designed to be used with powers up to 20 kW. In order to test the effectiveness of the design in creating neutrons, the target needed to be tested. The 20 kW beam was not available for testing so this target was tested at powers under 1 kW. The experiments were modeled using a particle transport code, MCNPX, and the target produced an average of 1x1012 neutrons/second in models. Almost all models produced 198Au decay rates higher than the experimental results, which has also been seen in previous tests of the targets used on the Reactor Accelerator Coupling Experiments project

    Time management displays for shuttle countdown

    The Intelligent Launch Decision Support System project is developing a Time Management System (TMS) for the NASA Test Director (NTD) to use for time management during Shuttle terminal countdown. TMS is being developed in three phases: an information phase; a tool phase; and an advisor phase. The information phase is an integrated display (TMID) of firing room clocks, of graphic timelines with Ground Launch Sequencer events, and of constraints. The tool phase is a what-if spreadsheet (TMWI) for devising plans for resuming from unplanned hold situations. It is tied to information in TMID, propagates constraints forward and backward to complete unspecified values, and checks the plan against constraints. The advisor phase is a situation advisor (TMSA), which proactively suggests tactics. A concept prototype for TMSA is under development. The TMID is currently undergoing field testing.     Prevalence and risk factors of sarcopenia among adults living in nursing homes

    Objectives: Sarcopenia is a progressive loss of skeletal muscle and muscle function, with significant healthand disability consequences for older adults. We aimed to evaluate the prevalence and risk factors ofsarcopenia among older residential aged care adults using the European Working Group on Sarcopeniain Older People (EWGSOP) criteria.Study design: A cross-sectional study design that assessed older people (n = 102, mean age 84.5 ± 8.2 years)residing in 11 long-term nursing homes in Australia.Main outcome measurements: Sarcopenia was diagnosed from assessments of skeletal mass index bybioelectrical impedance analysis, muscle strength by handheld dynamometer, and physical performanceby the 2.4 m habitual walking speed test. Secondary variables where collected to inform a risk factoranalysis.Results: Forty one (40.2%) participants were diagnosed as sarcopenic, 38 (95%) of whom were categorizedas having severe sarcopenia. Univariate logistic regression found that body mass index (BMI) (Oddsratio (OR) = 0.86; 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.78–0.94), low physical performance (OR = 0.83; 95% CI0.69–1.00), nutritional status (OR = 0.19; 95% CI 0.05–0.68) and sitting time (OR = 1.18; 95% CI 1.00–1.39)were predictive of sarcopenia. With multivariate logistic regression, only low BMI (OR = 0.80; 95% CI0.65–0.97) remained predictive.Conclusions: The prevalence of sarcopenia among older residential aged care adults is very high.     Space Transportation System Meteorological Expert

    Computers are being used today to build the expert systems of tomorrow. Expert systems are computer programs that are smart about a domain in the way that people are smart. Expert systems technology is being applied to weather forecasting to support Shuttle operations for launch and for ground processing at Kennedy Space Center (KSC), Florida. The Space Transportation System Meterological ExperT (STSMET) is a long term project, now-in its third year, to capture general Shuttle operational weather forecasting expertise specific to our locale, to apply it to Shuttle operational weather forecasting tasks at the Cape Canaveral Forecast Facility (CCFF) at the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station (CCAFS), and to ultimately provide an on-line, real-time operational aid to the duty forecasters in performing their tasks. The first domain addressed by the project has been summer thunderstorms. The effort to represent this knowledge and a control structure to reason about it has resulted in an approach that we call scenario-based reasoning. Other meteorological domains on our agenda are frontal weather phenomena, visibility including fog, and wind shear. We believe that scenario-based reasoning is also applicable to these other meteorological domains. The specific operational tasks to which to apply the general knowledge about summer thunderstorms are being identified during this phase of the contract. The project is being developed using state-of-the-art hardware and software: a Symbolics Lisp Machine, Zetalisp and Automated Reasoning Tool (ART), an expert system shell. Scenario-based reasoning appears to have applications outside of weather forecasting. The abilities of a scenario-based system to reason qualitatively, to reason over time, and to reason across scale are all applicable to planning in autonomous systems. With further research, we expect to add analogical reasoning to the abilities of scenario-based reasoning

    Order-disorder transformations in Sm–Co and Sm–Co–ZrC systems with 2-17 stoichiometry

    This work investigates the order-disorder transformations utilizing time-resolved x-ray diffraction at the Advanced Photon Source. The metastable phases that can form during the order-disorder transformations in the Sm–Co intermetallics have the potential to produce materials with enhanced permanent magnetic properties. The high-temperature experiments transformed the disordered alloys with the TbCu7-type structure obtained by rapid solidification into the mixture of the hexagonal and rhombohedral ordered structures at 1375 K. The ordering process and the role of the ZrC alloying on the phase formation and ordering transformations were examined. The results showed the formation of shoulders of the fundamental peaks and superlattice peak broadening prior to complete ordering. The lattice parameters expanded linearly up to the onset of ordering, after which an abrupt change of slope was observed. The change in slope suggests a nucleation and growth mechanism for the ordering transformation. The effect of ZrC alloying promoted the formation of the disordered structure in the as-solidified state and lowered the onset of the ordering temperature

    Integral Neutron Multiplicity Measurements from Cosmic Ray Interactions in Lead

    Sixty element 3He neutron multiplicity detector systems were designed, constructed and tested for use in cosmic ray experiments with a 30-cm cube lead target. A series of measurements were performed for the cosmic ray configuration at ground level (3 meters water equivalent, mwe), in the St. Petersburg metro tunnel (185 mwe), and in the PyhÀsalmi mine in Finland (583 and 1185 mwe). Anomalous coincidence events with charged cosmic ray particles at sea level produced events with 100-120 neutrons due possibly to the total disintegration of the Pb nucleus. These events were also detected at 185 mwe, but the particles causing such disintegration are currently unidentified. We present examples of preliminary data from the various measurements and discuss future plans for underground experiments including possible searches for Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMP, dark matter)

    A recent article (NĂșñez et al., 2019) claims that cognitive science, while starting off as a multidisciplinary enterprise, has “failed to transition to a mature inter‐disciplinary coherent field.” Two indicators reported in support of this claim target one of the two journals of the Cognitive Science Society, Cognitive Science , depicting cognitive science as an increasingly monodisciplinary subfield which is dominated by psychology. With a focus on the society's other journal, Topics in Cognitive Science , the present commentary reveals a greater degree of interdisciplinarity and discusses the relative values of diversity and integration for the field.publishedVersio

    A Web-Based Intervention is Feasible for Supporting Weight Loss and Increased Activity in Rural Women with Arthritis

    Rural women have well documented health disparities, with higher prevalence of obesity and chronic conditions, including arthritis. Change in weight and actigraph-recorded data were examined in a subset of 63 of 82 women with physician-diagnosed arthritis who completed a 30-month web-based clinical trial. Repeated measures analyses showed women lost weight from baseline to six months, slowly regained at 18 and 30 months, ending with a lower weight than baseline F(1,62)=40.89, p\u3c0.001, η2p =0.40. Of 53 women with complete data, activity increased at six months, decreased at 18 months, and increased at 30 months F(1,52)=4.14, p =.04, η2p=0.07. Women showed improved change in weight and activity from baseline at six, 18 and 30 months.     Which health-related quality of life score? A comparison of alternative utility measures in patients with Type 2 diabetes in the ADVANCE trial.

    BACKGROUND: Diabetes has a high burden of illness both in life years lost and in disability through related co-morbidities. Accurate assessment of the non-mortality burden requires appropriate health-related quality of life and summary utility measures of which there are several contenders. The study aimed to measure the impact of diabetes on various health-related quality of life domains, and compare several summary utility measures. METHODS: In the ADVANCE (Action in Diabetes and Vascular Disease: Preterax and Diamicron MR Controlled Evaluation) study, 978 Australian patients with Type 2 diabetes completed two health-related quality of life questionnaires at baseline: the EQ-5D and the SF-36v2, from which nine summary utility measures were calculated, and compared. The algorithms were grouped into four classes: (i) based on the EQ-5D; (ii) using fewer items than those in the SF-12 (iii) using the items in the SF-12; and (iv) using all items of the SF-36. RESULTS: Overall health-related quality of life of the subjects was good (mean utility ranged from 0.68 (+/-0.08) to 0.85(+/-0.14) over the nine utility measures) and comparable to patients without diabetes. Summary indices were well correlated with each other (r = 0.76 to 0.99), and showed lower health-related quality of life in patients with major diabetes-related events such as stroke or myocardial infarction. Despite the smaller number of items used in the scoring of the EQ-5D, it generally performed at least as well as SF-36 based methods. However, all utility measures had some limitation such as limited range or ceiling effects. CONCLUSION: The summary utility measures showed good agreement, and showed good discrimination between major and minor health state changes. However, EQ-5D based measures performed as well and are generally simpler to use
