    An evaluation of the productivity of two oil mallee species in a revegetation trial in the Central Wheatbelt of Western Australia

    Two of Western Australia\u27s most pressing land degradation problems are waterlogging and increasing soil salinity. Extensive clearing of the native. deep-rooted vegetation and its replacement with shallow-rooted crop and pasture plants has resulted in increased recharge of groundwater tables. causing them to rise. Salts stored in the soil are being brought to the soil surface with the rising watertables. Revegetation with deep-rooted native plants has been identified as the most likely strategy to achieve increased groundwater usage and a lowering of watertables. One area seriously affected by waterlogging and increasing salinity is the Western Australian central wheatbelt region. The Department for Conservation and Land Management [CALM] is conducting revegetation trials with oil producing mallee-form eucalypts. It is hoped that commercial production of cineole, a major constituent of eucalyptus oil, will prove to be an economic catalyst for large-scale revegetation of tile Western Australian wheatbelt region. Species used in the oil mallee trials include Eucalyptus horistes and E. loxaphleba subsp. lissophloia, about which very little is known. Yet site specific species selection, based on knowledge of a species\u27 preferred site conditions for maximum productivity, is essential in reaching revegetation objectives, such as high water use and cineole production. To gain this knowledge about E. horistes and E. loxophfeba subsp. lissophloia a study was conducted on trial sites in the central wheatbelt region of Narrogin-Wickepin. A number of plant growth, water use and cineole production parameters were examined at sites representing recharge and discharge zones, and the chemical and physical characteristics of the sites were determined. It was hypothesised that any differences in species productivity and water use can be explained in terms of the species\u27 suitability to the site conditions, and that any differences between species are physiological. Analysis of the data revealed that E. horistes prefers recharge sites, while E. loxophleba subsp. lissophloia appears to be a generalist species. Both species transpire large amounts of water, making them inherently suitable for revegetation projects aimed at controlling rising watertables and associated soil salinity. Cineole production by E. horistes plants was larger, and E. loxophleba subsp. Lissophloia showed great variability in leaf cineole content. The study highlighted the need for grazing and weed controls in oil mallee plantations, as well as the necessity to carry out further research with emphasis on species provenance selection and breeding trials for higher cineole yields and improved tolerance to waterlogged and saline site conditions

    Theory of the n=2 levels in muonic deuterium

    The present knowledge of Lamb shift, fine- and hyperfine structure of the 2S\mathrm{2S} and 2P\mathrm{2P} states in muonic deuterium is reviewed in anticipation of the results of a first measurement of several 2S−2P\mathrm{2S-2P} transition frequencies in muonic deuterium (μd\mu\mathrm{d}). A term-by-term comparison of all available sources reveals reliable values and uncertainties of the QED and nuclear structure-dependent contributions to the Lamb shift, which are essential for a determination of the deuteron rms charge radius from μd\mu\mathrm{d}. Apparent discrepancies between different sources are resolved, in particular for the difficult two-photon exchange contributions.     Re-Presenting People: Critically Reviewing Existing Imagery of Traditional Coast Salish Lifeways and Creating New Images

    Images are powerful communicators of ideas because they shape how people perceive and understand the past (Moser 1996, Arnold 2005). It is important to critically look at them with a decolonizing lens to ensure that the artists who make these images and the authors that use them do not imply harmful or disrespectful ideas about the people depicted. For my thesis, I critically examine how archaeologists and other authors present ideas about indigenous Northwest Coast and Coast Salish people’s traditional lifeways through images. By looking at existing images from my perspective as an archaeologist and artist and including perspectives from the Lummi Cultural Resource Preservation Commission, I consider how dominant colonial ideologies have influenced representations of past Northwest Coast and Coast Salish peoples. I have kept these ideas in mind when creating new images of past Coast Salish lifeways inspired by archaeological evidence

    Indications for the applicability of element signature analysis for the determination of the geographic origin of dried beef and poultry meat

    In order to determine the geographic origin of poultry and dried beef, concentrations of a total of 72 different elements (occasionally represented with several isotopes) were analyzed by inductively coupled plasma high resolution mass spectrometry (ICP-HRMS). Additionally, gross chemical composition (GCC) was analyzed. The 25 poultry breast filets samples originated from Switzerland, France, Germany, Hungary, Brazil, and Thailand, and the 23 dried beef samples, made from M. biceps femoris and M. semitendinosus, were produced in Switzerland, Austria, Australia, United States, and Canada out of raw meat originating either from these or from other countries. A total of 66 and 46 of the elements and isotopes followed were detected in beef and poultry, respectively. For statistical analyses, only the most abundant isotopes per element were used. For both poultry meat and dried beef, a differentiation of the origins was possible using those elements, which were significantly different across countries (As, Na, Rb, and Tl in poultry; B, Ca, Cd, Cu, Dy, Eu, Ga, Li, Ni, Pd, Rb, Sr, Te, Tl, Tm, V, Yb, and Zn in beef). No sufficient differentiation between origins was possible with GCC. Further studies have to confirm the suitability of this approach for meat authentication with more sample

    Improved X-ray detection and particle identification with avalanche photodiodes

    Avalanche photodiodes are commonly used as detectors for low energy x-rays. In this work we report on a fitting technique used to account for different detector responses resulting from photo absorption in the various APD layers. The use of this technique results in an improvement of the energy resolution at 8.2 keV by up to a factor of 2, and corrects the timing information by up to 25 ns to account for space dependent electron drift time. In addition, this waveform analysis is used for particle identification, e.g. to distinguish between x-rays and MeV electrons in our experiment.Comment: 6 pages, 6 figure

    Genetic risk and a primary role for cell-mediated immune mechanisms in multiple sclerosis.

    Multiple sclerosis is a common disease of the central nervous system in which the interplay between inflammatory and neurodegenerative processes typically results in intermittent neurological disturbance followed by progressive accumulation of disability. Epidemiological studies have shown that genetic factors are primarily responsible for the substantially increased frequency of the disease seen in the relatives of affected individuals, and systematic attempts to identify linkage in multiplex families have confirmed that variation within the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) exerts the greatest individual effect on risk. Modestly powered genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have enabled more than 20 additional risk loci to be identified and have shown that multiple variants exerting modest individual effects have a key role in disease susceptibility. Most of the genetic architecture underlying susceptibility to the disease remains to be defined and is anticipated to require the analysis of sample sizes that are beyond the numbers currently available to individual research groups. In a collaborative GWAS involving 9,772 cases of European descent collected by 23 research groups working in 15 different countries, we have replicated almost all of the previously suggested associations and identified at least a further 29 novel susceptibility loci. Within the MHC we have refined the identity of the HLA-DRB1 risk alleles and confirmed that variation in the HLA-A gene underlies the independent protective effect attributable to the class I region. Immunologically relevant genes are significantly overrepresented among those mapping close to the identified loci and particularly implicate T-helper-cell differentiation in the pathogenesis of multiple sclerosis

    The Precision nEDM Measurement with UltraCold Neutrons at TRIUMF

    The TRIUMF Ultra-Cold Advanced Neutron (TUCAN) collaboration aims at a precision neutron electric dipole moment (nEDM) measurement with an uncertainty of 10−27 e⋅cm10^{-27}\,e\cdot\mathrm{cm}, which is an order-of-magnitude better than the current nEDM upper limit and enables us to test Supersymmetry. To achieve this precision, we are developing a new high-intensity ultracold neutron (UCN) source using super-thermal UCN production in superfluid helium (He-II) and a nEDM spectrometer.
