Partnership research with older people: moving towards making the rhetoric a reality
As nursing develops closer partnerships with older people in delivering care, it also needs to develop partnerships in order to create the knowledge base for practice in a way that challenges professional hegemony and empowers older people. However, the process of developing partnerships in research takes place against a background of academic research traditions and norms, which can present obstacles to collaboration. This paper is a reflection on the issues that have arisen in three projects where older people were involved in research at different levels, from sources of data to independent researchers. It points to some of the areas that need further exploration and development

Experimental configuration of direct drive cylindrical implosions on the Omega Laser
Details about the cylindrical implosions using direct-drive irradiation on the OMEGA Laser facility are provided. The experimental configuration, including orientation, construction, and mounting of the targets is described. An attempt to characterize the modulation transfer function of the primary x-ray framing camera diagnostic results in insufficient exposure contrast but relative agreement with other determinations. The x-ray intensity of the titanium backlighter driven by the 2.5-nsec linear ramp of the laser beams is described, and the relative intensity on film is compared to similar Nova experiments. The parallax effects of different length marker layers of high-opacity dichloropolystyrene is measured, resulting in the conclusion that the marker layer length should be matched to the laser drive illumination profile
The structure ofAl(111)-K−(√3 × √3)R30° determined by LEED: stable and metastable adsorption sites
It is found that the adsorption of potassium on Al(111) at 90 K and at 300 K both result in a (√3 × √3)R0° structure. Through a detailed LEED analysis it is revealed that at 300 K the adatoms occupy substitutional sites and at 90 K the adatoms occupy on-top sites; both geometries have hitherto been considered as very unusual. The relationship between bond length and coordination is discussed with respect to the present results, and with respect to other quantitative studies of alkali-metal/metal adsorption systems
Auxiliary particle theory of threshold singularities in photoemission and X-ray absorption spectra: Test of a conserving T-matrix approximation
We calculate the exponents of the threshold singularities in the
photoemission spectrum of a deep core hole and its X-ray absorption spectrum in
the framework of a systematic many-body theory of slave bosons and
pseudofermions (for the empty and occupied core level). In this representation,
photoemission and X-ray absorption can be understood on the same footing; no
distinction between orthogonality catastrophe and excitonic effects is
necessary. We apply the conserving slave particle T-matrix approximation
(CTMA), recently developed to describe both Fermi and non-Fermi liquid behavior
systems with strong local correlations, to the X-ray problem as a test case.
The numerical results for both photoemission and X-ray absorption are found to
be in agreement with the exact infrared powerlaw behavior in the weak as well
as in the strong coupling regions. We point out a close relation of the CTMA

The Nucleon-Nucleon Interaction in the Chromo-Dielectric Soliton Model: Dynamics
The present work is an extension of a previous study of the nucleon-nucleon
interaction based on the chromo-dielectric soliton model. The former approach
was static, leading to an adiabatic potential. Here we perform a dynamical
study in the framework of the Generator Coordinate Method. In practice, we
derive an approximate Hill-Wheeler differential equation and obtain a local
nucleon-nucleon potential as a function of a mean generator coordinate. This
coordinate is related to an effective separation distance between the two
nucleons by a Fujiwara transformation. This latter relationship is especially
useful in studying the quark substructure of light nuclei. We investigate the
explicit contribution of the one-gluon exchange part of the six-quark
Hamiltonian to the nucleon-nucleon potential, and we find that the dynamics are
responsible for a significant part of the short-range N-N repulsion.Comment: 16 pages (REVTEX), 6 figures (uuencoded Postscript) optionally

Confirmation of a pi_1^0 Exotic Meson in the \eta \pi^0 System
The exclusive reaction , at 18 GeV has been studied with a partial wave analysis on a sample
of 23~492 events from BNL experiment E852. A mass-dependent fit
is consistent with a resonant hypothesis for the wave, thus providing
evidence for a neutral exotic meson with , a mass of MeV, and a width of MeV. New
interpretations of the meson exotics in neutral system observed in
E852 and Crystal Barrel experiments are discussed.Comment: p3, rewording the paragraph (at the bottom) about the phase

Modelling negative linear compressibility in tetragonal beam structures

Contrary to this, some materials have been discovered that exhibit negative linear compressibility and, as such, expand along a specific axis or plane. This paper analyses a fundamental mechanism by using a combination of finite element simulations and analytical derivations to show that negative linear compressibility can be found in a body-centred or face-centred tetragonal network of nodes connected by a network of beams. The magnitude and direction of this behaviour depends on the cross geometry in the network
Spin fluctuations in the quasi-two dimensional Heisenberg ferromagnet GdI_2 studied by Electron Spin Resonance
The spin dynamics of GdI_2 have been investigated by ESR spectroscopy. The
temperature dependences of the resonance field and ESR intensity are well
described by the model for the spin susceptibility proposed by Eremin et al.
[Phys. Rev. B 64, 064425 (2001)]. The temperature dependence of the resonance
linewidth shows a maximum similar to the electrical resistance and is discussed
in terms of scattering processes between conduction electrons and localized

Exotic Meson Production in the System observed in the Reaction at 18 GeV/c
This letter reports results from the partial wave analysis of the
final state in collisions at 18GeV/c.
Strong evidence is observed for production of two mesons with exotic quantum
numbers of spin, parity and charge conjugation, in the decay
channel . The mass MeV/c^2 and
width MeV/c^2 of the first state are consistent
with the parameters of the previously observed . The second
resonance with mass MeV/c^2 and width MeV/c^2 agrees very well with predictions from theoretical
models. In addition, the presence of is confirmed with mass MeV/c^2 and width MeV/c^2
and a new state, , is observed with mass
MeV/c^2 and width MeV/c^2. The decay properties of
these last two states are consistent with flux tube model predictions for
hybrid mesons with non-exotic quantum numbers
